So, the day before the Senate trial, which starts with pre-trial motions Tuesday at 1PM Eastern, everybody is speculating about how it will go. May as well add my own voice to the mix and see if I turn out to be right!

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell emphasizes that this is the Senate’s time to take over the process. That’s how the Constitution lays it out, but it’s reassuring to hear from McConnell’s own lips that he gets it. Congressional Democrats don’t, or at least they think YOU don’t, as they try to manipulate the process. They had their time to call the shots --- and they certainly did, to the point of denying the President and his defenders basic due process. But McConnell will NOT deny anyone due process; he’s using the same rules that had bipartisan approval for the Clinton trial. Here’s House Judiciary Committee ranking member Doug Collins speaking on that and more, on LIFE, LIBERTY & LEVIN…

Trump’s defense will be driven by a stellar panel of trial managers. Some we know well: Ken Starr, Alan Dershowitz, Jay Sekulow, Pat Cipollone, Robert Ray, Pam Bondi. Jane Raskin was on the special counsel defense team. Eric Herschmann, whose name is least familiar, has represented Trump in other cases over the last 15 years. I see he has a lot of experience in the natural gas field, having served as general counsel, president and CEO of Southern Union Company; perhaps he’s there to bring perspective on Burisma.

FEATURED STORY

Punching back

By Mike Huckabee

Last week, I compared Arizona Sen. Martha McSally’s response to CNN reporter Manu Raju (“You’re a liberal hack, buddy”) to Rick Gervais’ blistering speaking-truth-to-powerful-liberal-hypocrites monologue at the Golden Globes.  I suggested that this, along with Dave Chappelle’s recent HBO special, might signal a turning point in our current culture, the moment at which the population at large finally reached its limit of patience, stood up and smacked down the pious leftist media hacks/PC social media mobs who think they have the right to tell all the rest of us what we’re allowed to think and say or else.

Just as Gervais and Chappelle’s comedy earned them scathing reviews from media critics and cheers from millions of fans, McSally’s blunt take on CNN outraged the news media and gave her reelection campaign a huge boost. It’s so popular, her campaign bought the URL www.liberalhack.com to take donations and sell “You’re a liberal hack, buddy” T-shirts. Meanwhile, Wolf Blitzer and other wounded media figures demanded an apology, and McSally told them where they could put that demand, saying that she merely told it like it was.

Naturally, President Trump praised McSally’s smackdown of his eternal nemesis "fake news CNN" and tweeted his support for her reelection.  In fact, Trump is truly the spiritual grandfather of this movement, having spent the past few years showing Republicans that when you’re unfairly attacked by biased news media figures, you don’t have to just roll over and apologize to them for your unworthiness.  You can fight back.  To those who claim that in doing this, that vulgarian Trump has lowered the level of civility in political discourse, I would remind them of this quote: “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard.” That was Obama deputy chief of staff Jim Messina’s advice to Democratic Senators on how to respond to critics of Obamacare.

Well, Republicans, and everyone else who’ve been the victims of the Twitter mobs and the cancel culture have reached the last straw (and if you don’t like that it’s a plastic straw, tough), and they’re now punching back, too.  Not pleasant, is it?  Maybe some better advice would have been, “If you don’t like being punched, don’t throw punches at other people first.”

That’s David Marcus’ advice to CNN at The Federalist, and he makes a good case that they’ve been treating conservatives as punching bags for a long time, and it’s high time one of those bags bounced back and smacked them in the teeth.

I wanted to make sure you also read these comments:

Today is the official holiday honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was both a great civil rights leader and a great spiritual leader and preacher. He has been a lifelong inspiration to me as he has to many millions of people. Although I do wish that some people who invoke his name would read what he actually had to say, since they seem to be promoting the opposite of his dream of a nation in which people of all races join together in brotherhood and are judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I’m not even sure that he’d be comfortable with his birthday being marked by people taking the day off. Dr. King’s life was not about taking days off, but taking days on. Days of injustice; days of racism, days of double standards, and days of persecution. His life was about taking the heat for trying to change attitudes and the culture.

He might be amused that banks that once refused to give a loan to a man of color are now closed in honor of a man of color; that a government that once spied on his private life is shut down to remember him; and that schools that once would have barred his children now dedicate a day of study to his life.

As the country takes a day off to remember Dr. King, let’s also let it be a day on. On for being kind to others; on for not retaliating in anger or violence; and on to working hard to serve others.

Saturday was the annual Women’s March, but there were far fewer participants in anatomically-correct headwear than in the first couple of years.

https://www.westernjournal.com/even-nyc-anti-trump-womens-march-draws-lackluster-crowd/

Megan Fox at PJ Media has a round-up of some of the more ridiculous protest signs (warning: lots of offensive language) at this link:

https://pjmedia.com/trending/the-nuttiest-signs-from-the-whiny-womens-march-2020/

And Kathy Grimes at the California Globe describes the march festivities at the Ground Zero of leftist irrationality, the California state Capitol, summing it up as “nothing more than screaming, angry female leftists demanding rights they already have.”

https://californiaglobe.com/section-2/demanding-rights-they-already-have-what-are-women-marchers-so-angry-about/

A few observations: this thing originally started out of a combination of fury over Hillary’s loss and hysteria over the delusion that Trump was going to crush women’s rights and make “The Handmaid’s Tale” reality (he actually had a long history of hiring and promoting women in his companies; he’s since appointed more women to high-level executive branch jobs than any other President and presides over the lowest female unemployment rate in over 70 years, while women are now a majority of the workforce – 50.04% - for the first time in a decade.)

The dwindling number of diehard paranoiacs dutifully made protest signs about how they demand the right to speak, then took to the streets to make their voices heard, and as far as I’ve been able to ascertain, not a single one of them was arrested. As Ms Fox points out, when have any of these women ever not spoken? There’s an increasingly obvious contrast between the left’s cartoon image of Donald Trump as an authoritarian tyrant/Nazi dictator and the way everyone who believes that exhibits no fear whatsoever of denouncing him in the most public ways (and usually gets rewarded, never punished or silenced.)

Finally, speaking of glaring contrasts, note all the pro-abortion signs mixed with all the poster imagery of the currently hot “Star Wars” character, Baby Yoda. Did it ever occur to these protesters that mixing images of an adorable baby with pro-baby-killing messages doesn’t advance their cause? Thinking logically, they’re not!

I predict that this week’s March For Life will dwarf the turnout for the Women’s March (maybe they should call it the March For Death.) To learn more about the national march in DC or local events near you, visit www.marchforlife.org.

On the other hand, if you want to see what real abuse of power and crushing of citizens’ rights look like, cast your eyes toward Virginia. There’s a big rally scheduled today in Richmond to oppose the Democratic government’s anti-gun push. In the last election, the Democrats won power over the Governor’s seat (Ralph “Blackface makeup/debate letting post-birth babies live” Northam) and the legislature. Even though their Senate majority is only two seats, they’ve embarked on a far-left blitzkrieg that has 90% of the state’s counties in revolt and declaring themselves Second Amendment “sanctuaries.

Democrats there have already floated the possibility of arresting law-abiding citizens for possessing guns that were legal when purchased, and even trying to use the state guard as their goon squad. When today’s pro-Second Amendment rally was announced, Northam claimed to have info that some militia-style elements might make trouble, so he declared an emergency and banned the carrying of guns at a pro-gun rights rally. Organizers called that unconstitutional, but the state supreme court allowed it.

https://www.westernjournal.com/va-state-senator-goes-public-72-hours-rally-set/

As you can see at the link, one conservative state senator is warning participants that they could be getting “set up” for arrests and being branded as terrorists if they carry their legal firearms or wear military-type attire – even those who were in the military. Imagine getting arrested, branded as a terrorist and banned from owning firearms just because you dressed as the veteran you are and spoke up for your Constitutional right to own firearms. Now, THAT’S what oppressive government really looks like.

I hope you’ll join me in praying that today’s rally is peaceful, that all sides show restraint, and there are no injuries or arrests. Also pray that rational thinking returns to Virginia, both among those currently in power and among voters when they return to the polls in November.

Bible Verse of the Day (KJV)

"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"

- 1 John 4:20
