Differences between red-state governance and blue state governance (or lack thereof):
In deep-blue Seattle, both the mayor and the Governor simply refuse to acknowledge that there’s any problem with a group of anarchists taking over six city blocks, expelling police, extorting businesses and declaring themselves an “autonomous” cop-free zone. They don’t merely turn a blind eye to the utter disregard for the law or the legal property owners, they try to sugarcoat it as a “festival” or “summer of love” type atmosphere.
And in deepest blue San Francisco, residents have been told not to even bother calling the police for “non-criminal” calls because they will no longer respond. To reduce “police confrontation calls about “non-violent” issues such as disputes with the homeless, the mentally ill, school discipline problems and neighbor disputes, will be routed to crisis managers instead (a more rational response might be simply to train police to deal better with confrontations, but we’re not talking about rationality, we’re talking about San Francisco.)
Of course, that means someone who is not on the scene will be making an uninformed long-distance decision about whether a problem with a neighbor or a homeless person is a “non-violent” situation, one where you need the police to confront it rather than you. The good news is, if this doesn’t work, you can call 911 back and they’ll still send an ambulance.
By contrast, in the red state of Tennessee, a group of protesters announced that they plan to set up an “autonomous zone” by the Capitol in Nashville, in solidarity with the anarchists in Seattle. Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s response: oh no, you will not. In his words:
"We encourage Tennesseans to exercise their First Amendment rights and have seen many examples of peaceful protests across our state in recent weeks. As demonstrations continue, we will continue to protect Tennesseans' right to peaceful assembly, while also reassuring citizens that lawlessness, autonomous zones, and violence will not be tolerated…Further, Tennessee law expressly prohibits camping on state property not expressly designated as a campground area, and that law will be enforced.”
No wonder leftists call themselves “progressives.” Enforcing laws? What an archaic concept!
REVEALING: DNI JOHN RATCLIFFE DECLASSIFIES KEY DOCUMENT
In the months leading up to the 2020 elections, stories about COVID-19 and escalating civil unrest from the far left –- with race as the catalyst –- will continue to dominate the news. To be sure, the way we address these issues will determine the direction America takes in the next generation and beyond. But as important as these stories are, there is one more big reason for the intensity of the coverage: by focusing exclusively on these issues, the media will not have to give any coverage at all to what would otherwise be the story of the decade: the ongoing declassification of documents that shows we were right all along about the “soft coup” against President Trump in 2016 and afterwards.
Yes, it really did happen. And it is treachery.
At any other time –- especially if it had been the Republicans pulling this against, say, candidate and later President Obama –- the screaming would be heard in a galaxy far, far away, and many people would rightly be arrested and charged and end up under the prison. It took then-acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell and the newly appointed DNI John Ratcliffe to finally get the evidence out after years of stonewalling and CYA by the intel community. The latest revelation concerns the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) that concluded the Russians had helped Trump win.
Remember how Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) pushed the line that “the 17 intel agencies” in our federal government concluded that the Russians had interfered in the 2016 election, specifically to damage Hillary and to help Trump win? (How releasing “Russian disinformation” about Trump cavorting with prostitutes in Moscow was supposed to HELP Trump is never addressed. Seems as though that would help Hillary, but hey, nobody said this had to make sense.) This line has been trumpeted since the ICA was first released, in redacted form, in January of 2017 –- as it happens, right before Trump’s inauguration.
Ralph Waldo Emerson famously observed that “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” But if, like today’s leftists, you are able to simultaneously believe that…
* The cops should be abolished, but before that, they should be sent to the home of an 11-year-old boy because his teacher saw a BB-gun in the background during an online class…
* …AND that magazines for gun enthusiasts should be banned from Kroger’s store racks if they have pictures of certain guns on the cover…
* …AND that an area of six city blocks seized by anti-police anarchists who are extorting business owners for money, and that is patrolled by a guy who declared himself a “warlord” and who is brandishing an automatic rifle, beating and kicking people for violating rules he just made up, and telling them they’re lucky he doesn’t blow their brains out, reflects a peaceful “festival atmosphere,” a “block party,” or possibly even a new “summer of love”...
…Well, if you can believe all that at the same time, you don’t have a little mind. In fact, you might not have a mind at all.
RE-MARK YOUR CALENDARS
President Trump announced that out of respect for the date conflict with Juneteeth, a holiday celebrating the date in 1865 when word of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, his political rally in Tulsa is being moved from June 19th to June 20th.
As a public service, I must also warn you to mark down that the coronavirus that could be spread if you rallied against government lockdowns, then that wouldn’t be spread if you rallied against racism and the police, will once again spread if you attend a pro-Trump rally. This is harder to keep up with than whether or not you’re supposed to wear a mask!
THE LEFT HAS OVERPLAYED ITS HAND
I wrote earlier that I think the left has so overplayed its hand with all the rioting, looting, vandalism, smashing of monuments, occupying of other people’s property, scrubbing of history and pop culture, and “canceling” anyone who dares speak a word of disagreement with their extreme positions that the backlash is going to be like the world’s biggest slingshot snapping back in their faces. And as further proof that they’ve waaay overplayed it, here’s liberal Rolling Stone political reporter Matt Taibbi describing in detail how “the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.”
Warning: you’ll have to wade through or skip over the obligatory opening paragraph trashing President Trump (and Taibbi undercut his own credibility by quoting fake news: Trump did NOT say that George Floyd was looking down approvingly on the promising jobs numbers; that was a phony story ginned up by deceptive video editing). But the rest is well worth reading. If this is what one of the top people at ultra-left Rolling Stone thinks, imagine what’s going through the minds of moderate swing voters.
Special notice for the story I haven’t mentioned yet: a Philadelphia Inquirer editor fired for running a story opposing vandalism under the headline, “Buildings matter, too.” Whether you think the headline distasteful or not, a Morning Consult poll found that 89% of Americans agree that protecting property from violent protesters is important, and that includes 64% of African-Americans. So the editor was fired for running an article that expressed the opinion of nearly 9 out of 10 Americans, across the racial spectrum. Talk about the tail wagging the dog.
Also, bonus points to Taibbi for the “Robbespierre” French Revolution reference. I would’ve also accepted a reference to the Spanish Inquisition or the Salem Witch Trials.
