Today marks the 84th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or “The Night of Broken Glass,” the Nazi pogram against Jews. Over November 9-10 of 1938, 267 synagogues were destroyed, over 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses were vandalized or destroyed, and 30,000 Jewish men were arrest and sent to concentration camps. It marked the beginning of the ramping up of German attacks on Jews that led to the Holocaust.

In a time of rising anti-Semitism, it’s vitally important that we remember the evils of that time and teach the history to young people, so that it can never happen again.

The World Holocaust Remembrance Center Yad Vashem’s website is a good place to start for information on Kristallnacht. Here’s a link to some of the articles they compiled for the 70th anniversary.

And the Boston Herald has some newly-discovered official German photos from that time which give a fresh look at the destruction and book-burnings the Nazis unleashed.
