Starbucks clarifies

May 23, 2018 |

It took just 48 hours after Starbucks announced its new “woke” policy of letting anyone come in, use the restrooms and hang out even if they don’t buy anything before the company was scrambling to clarify that, no, they are not attempting to become the world’s first chain of homeless shelters with $4 lattes and biscotti.

Both customers and employees complained about the policy potentially exposing them to dangerous lurkers and questionable hygiene, and the jokes were brutal (I tried to be gentle with mine, which might be why it’s quoted in the article.) So just to make it clear that they don’t want Starbucks to turn into a Frappuccino Flophouse, the company issued this clarification:

“When using a Starbucks space, we respectfully request that customers behave in a manner that maintains a warm and welcoming environment by: using spaces as intended, being considerate of others, communicating with respect [and] acting responsibly.”

Well, that oughta do it! What are the odds that homeless street people would act irresponsibly after being respectfully requested not to? Of course, they could always argue that this doesn’t apply to them because they aren’t actually “customers” if they don’t buy anything, are they?

I’m laying odds we’ll see at least three more “clarifications” of ever-escalating desperation before Starbucks finally realizes that “progressive” virtue-signaling and the realities of running a business mix about as well as a whipped cream and mustard macchiato and they return to the time-tested principle of "Buy something or get out."

If people just want a place to meet and not buy anything and be able to use a bathroom local libraries are open and usually have meeting rooms large and small and tables and chairs available , Business's are in business to make money they should not be expected to have people just sit and take up available table space they need to make money. Stopping in to use a bathroom is sometime necessary when public bathrooms are not available , I have done that but always at least buy a coffee or water at McDonalds or a gas station. I appreciate being able to use a clean bathroom when necessary. Our family owns a Hotel in a small town and once they had a couple of ladies stop in and take a table and open up sodas that they brought with them and never ordered anything. It's sorta like someone stopping into your home when not invited. A business expects you to buy something in order to keep their doors open.

those are pretty nebulous terms subject to individual interpretation... what it 'respectful' to some is not to others... also the same applies to these terms, " behave in a manner that maintains a warm and welcoming environment by: using spaces as intended, being considerate of others, communicating with respect [and] acting responsibly.” All subject to the norms of the people who are using the facilities. "Feelings" not FACTS create chaos, as I am sure they will find out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Starbucks a business and aren’t businesses in the business of providing a product or service to its customers? Now if the people hanging out at Starbucks are no longer customers and Starbucks is no longer serving them a product than Starbucks is no longer a business and my stock is now worthless. Sell, Sell, Sell!!!!

When I go into a store to use the restroom, I usually buy something, even if it is just a package of gum or a small french fry.

Hello Mr. Huckabee, I've been trying to reach you to tell you of my experience with face book. First I am an old lady 73, a conservative Christian. I was just recently banned from Facebook for 30 days for a comment they labeled as "Hate Speech". I actually sad, "In the beginning GOD created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." It was in response to yet another homosexual posting ( they are plentiful). I have great grand children asking questions and making comments of their confusion to all the "gay" stuff on all tv and everywhere and this upsets me.

The problem is that Starbucks is trying to clarify in writing a policy that is simply a common sense approach to doing business. Dirty, smelly people, be they homeless or sewer workers just taking a break, are a bit of an annoyance at any business establishment. The policy, then, dictates, but cannot be stated in writing lest the homeless coalition engage the services of the ACLU, that there be some level of discrimination. They need to exercise some level of common sense in determining whom they allow to "lurk" without purchasing. I did that several times while I was in Japan; it was a convenient place to meet my son before we started our day. Once he arrived, we probably would purchase something. The thing is, there was no stare from other customers, no workers coming to ask if I planned to make a purchase, no sign that I might not be welcome. But I was clean and dressed in casual clothing that was color coordinated and appropriate for the season (note to self: Next time you take a vacation in Fukuoka, don't go in August). And I didn't ask to use the restroom because my hotel was a block away. This whole thing has gotten totally out of hand. The "incident in Philadelphia" has become its own joke, and Starbucks corporate offices exacerbate the hilarity every time they try to "fix" things. Just don't put it in writing because someone somewhere will find a way to be offended by the well-intentioned wording. Train your people to be observant, to be sensitive to others, and to use good judgment. If they need to ask someone to leave, to deny them the use of the facilities, or whatever, and it appears to be escalating into an incident, then they back off, call the police, and let them deal with the situation from there. Often, police can actually de-escalate a situation and make it possible for everyone to walk away reasonably satisfied WITHOUT making an arrest. Maybe the policy should prohibit the use of cellphones to make videos inside their establishments. That way, no out of context videos could go viral and rile up the entire nation over what was really nothing.

All you parents with 30-somethings living off you can now send them down to Starbucks to spend all their time. Win/Win! It won't bother me, there's no place I'm less likely to buy a coffee either way.

I look forward to your daily communications/responses to the world (and deep state) around us. You have wonderful wit, clarification of issues, a great spiritual and political background that solidifies your analyses, and ability to be positive in what could be demoralizing life circumstances. I only have one question...are there any more at home like you?! :)

I agree, it seems the liberals are so squirreled by political correctness, they are chasing their tails and rushing to get out the message that might lead the next wave of inclusiveness.
