The State of the Union

January 31, 2018

Last night, President Trump gave his first State of the Union Address. Trump touted the greatness of the American people, listed some accomplishments of his first year (a booming economy and job growth, the GOP tax cut, deregulation, the crushing of ISIS, the end of the Obamacare mandate, etc.) and some things still to be done that he hopes can involve bipartisan cooperation. He also introduced a number of heroic guests with very moving stories (some critics noted the shift from Obama inviting victims to Trump inviting heroes).

It was the third longest SOTU on record, but even some of Trump’s relentless media critics grudgingly admitted that it was so masterfully delivered, it felt shorter (others still carped that it was “dark” and negative, which it obviously wasn’t, especially compared to the Democratic response, which made America sound like a “Max Max” movie. More on that later). For those who couldn’t sit through the full 80 minutes, here’s a round-up of 10 highlights: READ MORE

Speaking of sitting through the full 80 minutes, most Democrats did just that. Nancy Pelosi had warned them against chanting, walking out or other childish outbursts, assuming that would put all the focus on Trump and he would embarrass himself. Instead, they just looked as if someone had glued their pants to their chairs and they were waiting for an emergency delivery of Metamucil. One Trump critic was even forced to admit that he looked like the adult in the room. I don’t think their sullen behavior did them any favors. It was one thing to stay seated when Trump talked about things they hate, like border security, lower taxes, cutting regulations and respecting the flag. But it took a real act of political suicide to sit cross-armed and look as if they were sucking lemons when he offered them things they allegedly support.

When he called for offering Dreamers a pathway to citizenship (albeit with a border wall and an end to chain migration and the visa lottery), Democrats sat and glared. When he lauded the lowest Hispanic and black unemployment rates in history, Democrats – even the Congressional Black Caucus – sat and frowned as if they had tacks in their Fruit of the Looms. Ditto for a proposal for expanded family leave. You’d never know that, when Trump mentioned recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, they’d recently voted overwhelmingly to do just that. Some Democrats didn’t even applaud when he introduced a hero cop who saved a heroin addict’s life and adopted her baby. The RNC should send them a thank-you note for helping so much when it comes time to produce campaign commercials.

The Democrats couldn’t have made it any clearer that when it comes to a choice of helping the people they claim to care about or obstructing Trump for partisan political advantage, politics will win out every time. I can’t help feeling that Trump knew that’s exactly how they would react, and that’s why he said he was “extending an open hand to work with members of both parties.” He knew they were going to be foolish enough to slap that hand on national TV.

Trump’s State of the Union Address included a number of moving moments, especially the introductions of the parents of children slain by illegal immigrants and the North Korean regime, and a heroic escapee from Kim Jong-Un’s prison state, as well as plenty of memorable quotes, such as:

“In American, we know that faith and family, not bureaucracy, are the center of American life. The motto is ‘In God We Trust.'”

“If you believe in America, you can dream anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve anything… We all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny, and the same great American flag.”

“We want every American to know the dignity of a hard day’s work…We can lift our citizens from welfare to work, from dependence to independence.”

Companies now “want to be where the action is. They want to be in America.”

After honoring Rep. Steve Scalise (who was shot by – as the media seldom remind us – a deranged leftist targeting Republicans for mass murder), Trump said this: “In the aftermath of that terrible shooting, we came together. Not as Republicans or Democrats, but as representatives of the people. But it is not enough only to come together in times of tragedy. Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people. This is really the key. These were the people we were elected to serve.”

Someone should have reminded Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer that cameras were on them as Trump called for cooperation, statesmanship and unity. I’ve seen more pleasant faces on Halloween masks.

But what will definitely be Trump’s most-quoted segment of the speech was this:

“Tonight, I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties — Democrats and Republicans — to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion, and creed. My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber is to defend Americans — to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Because Americans are dreamers too.”

That last line – “Americans are Dreamers, too” – set Twitter on fire.

But there’s nothing more pie-in-the-face embarrassing than when someone slamdunks you with a great line, and you try to turn it around on them and fall flat. That happened to Nancy Pelosi after the speech, when she tried to counter Trump by defiantly tweeting, “Dreamers are Americans, too.”

Well, no. As many Twitter users reminded her, they aren’t. They might be Americanized culturally, but they’re still illegal immigrants. If they were Americans, there would be no need for a DACA bill to keep them from being deported. Maybe her snappy comebacks are like the Affordable Care Act: she inflicts them on the country without reading them first.

There had been talk of Democrats really behaving like children by chanting or storming out during the speech, but Nancy Pelosi warned them to stay put and keep quiet. As she put it, showing her typical respect for the Commander in Chief, “Let the attention be on his slobbering self.”

Ironically, when it was all over, it was Trump getting the great reviews for his speech while Joe Kennedy III had people online asking, “Why is Conan O’Brien giving the Democratic response, and why is he drooling?”

The Democratic response painted one of the most apocalyptic portraits of America I’ve seen since the last Hollywood climate change disaster movie. In Kennedy’s view, the USA seems to be nothing but daily marches by white supremacists, mass shootings around the clock, “immigrants” being targeted for deportation, people being assaulted for the gender of their spouses (never mind that Trump backed same-sex marriage when Obama and Hillary were still pretending to oppose it) and everyone at each other’s throats. At one point, he gravely intoned that "This is not who we are." That was the one thing I agreed with him on: it certainly isn’t who we are!

In a poll that it must have pained CBS to report, 75% of Americans had a positive reaction to Trump’s SOTU speech (I expect that at least 25% would have a negative reaction if Trump ran into a burning building and saved a litter of puppies). Sixty-five percent said it made them feel “proud” and 35% said it made them feel “safer.” I’d be curious to know how many felt “baffled” to see the Congressional Black Caucus frowning and refusing to clap at the mention of record low black unemployment.

Finally, the Funniest SOTU Comment: Bernie Sanders tried to give his own response online, but immediately had technical difficulties and then his response feed crashed. The America Rising PAC tweeted, “Thanks for demonstrating how this would work in a socialist country, Bernie!”

Worth remembering when leftists ask you to put them in charge of the government: they can’t even get a Twitter feed to work.

I thought the state of the union address was excellent!! It is everything I stand for and it is about time someone does something about all immigration problems we have in this country!! Deporting all illegals is a great thing Trump is doing. I also think we need to limit how many people can enter this country and check into their backgrounds too!! I also think the infrastructer in this country needs updating!

I read the SOTU since I could not watch it live. I did get to watch some parts of the video of it. I was very impressed with what our President (yeah!!!!!!) had to say, how it was presented and how it was just what a leader should say. He is unabashedly American, for Americans and for our safety! He did seem, as I read someplace, "The adult in the room". I am so disappointed in the Democrats' reactions though. Really? African American and Latino unemployement down considerably and nobody from that party applauded or stood? Really? Have the Democrats become fighters for those who are here illegally and taking away jobs from our own, especially minorities? That is shameful! Nancy Pelosi needs to get a grip and think before she tweets...... Dreamers are not Americans. They may have been brought here as youngster and have had no choice in the matter, but the fact remains, they are not naturalized citizen. I came to this country (legally, by the way), which I deeply love and will defend, as a young woman. I applied for citizenship, studied, passed all the tests I had to pass and PROUDLY swore allegiance to the flag and the country. Dreamers who are given an opportunity to work through a pathway to citizenship should realize what a great concession is being offered, as should the Democrats in Congress. When they do become citizens, they need to remember the great gift they have been given and BE GRATEFUL for it. It may not be what we all want, but it is a compromise and a way for everyone to get something and start moving forward with MAGA!

That was the best State of the Union speech I've ever heard! I saw a President that is so proud to be an American! It also made me proud to be an American! I'm so excited at what he has accomplished in his first year and I'm excited to see what the next 7 yrs will bring! Also I'm so proud when Sarah puts those reporters in their place! She would make a good President!

I gave Trump a B, maybe even a B+, as he stayed on message, even though I did not like some parts of the message. His best line of the night "Americans are dreamers too". That earned the "+".
The Darksiders sat sulking like an eight year old after being told they cannot have dessert. How immature for a 70 year old woman to sit and pout. At one point she was picking at her teeth, maybe fangs?, and it appeared as though she was sucking her thumb. Gosh whatever happened to democrats? Where did they go? They are acting like buffoons and pretending to be statesman. How embarrassing for the country.

WE were very impressed with the President's address last night. However, alittle worried about what he had to say on DACA?? I sure hope he isn't "caving" in to those liberal Democ?? Why should anyone even have a chance to become an American if they are going to assimilate & Pledge Alligiance to the flag. Such is the Muslims who aren't allowed to follow anyone or thing except Allah. So why do we let them stay here............get them on the ships & planes.........that includes DACA. They are no longer children. And if they were so..........interested in being a USA citizen why weren't they working on it before now?

As a former Democrat, it embarrasses me that that Party has gone so far to the left. The Democratic Party is nothing like it used to be. They used to be for the "little man or woman". Now they are only for illegals, causing our country to be divided, not representing their constituents. They get elected then go their own way, doing what they wish. Only Jesus can save our country b/c politicians won't come together to do that. IN GOD WE TRUST!

It was a very inspiring speech from DJT, even Hillary and Obama would have been proud of Trump and what he has undeniably achieved in such a short time. As an African-American, I am quietly enthusiastic about the lowest job figures ever for our community. Trump deserves to be highly commended for this and all that democrat envying needs to stop with the very pathetic attitude of the black caucus, who have managed to do precious little for our community. It is small minded of them to act this way, he who envies is the lesser man and that is what those lots are in view of their unsavoury attitude towards DTJ. They should be ashamed of themselves really.

I watched from beginning to end our President's State of the Union address. I also watched with disgust those democrats (notably Pelosi) and others displaying their utter disrespect for our President. To say their attitude was shameful would be putting it much too mildly. The Black Caucus wearing their African colors is, to me, on the far left edge about to topple over into rebellion against the United States. And the remarkable thing is, they yell the loudest about racism and injustice when they themselves violate they very things they protest against, with gusto. This problem will never end as long as they continue to isolate themselves the way they do. Pelosi and all the rest don't serve the American people, they serve only their own interests masquerading as the pillars of their communities. Absurd, utterly absurd...they need to be replaced with genuine representatives of the people....

I totally enjoyed and was encourage by President Trump's SOTU message than any other President. It was positive throughout. Every story even those which could have been labeled as dark ended up with a positive message. Heroes, Economic Growth, Job Growth, Tax breaks, etc. No matter how true and positive the message there will always be those who are brain washed or enter a situation extremely pessimistic. I love the fact that President Trump isn't the Washington Norm. He stands alone and doesn't bow to the Washington Politics. He truly cares for the American People including their safety. What part of ILLEGAL ALIENS doesn't the Democratic Party understand. ILLEGAL always meant "Against the Law". There were consequences. Smaller gov't, YES. Give more responsibility back to the people. Now if only the Republican party can support our President. God Bless President Trump.

The President's State of the Union address, was the most positive view of America that I heard in the last eight years and I hope that all Americans can visualize this country once again becoming the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
I am a American who believes that there is a God and also in United States Constitution that was written by our Founding Fathers. I have served my country proudly and also my community. So it is a nice change to see a leader stand strong and step forward to serve the country that he loves, then someone who leads from behind, criticizing and blaming others while apologizing for his country. America got the right leader at the right time to keep all hostile counties concerned. And for all those progressives, anarchist, socialist, communist and criminals elements, America is getting fed up with all your propaganda lies. It does take time, but like a disease, the cure is coming with the right leaders who want only the best for america .

This SOTU address is the best I have heard! I applaud President Trump in how he tied a heroic story in with his next point that he is going to address! Great job on his part! I believe in him and that he is trying his best to help the American people. It is not about him but to help us and make America great again! I was appalled at the Democrats for not respecting, honoring, clapping nor showing their appreciation for what these heroes sacrificed and their families. I say these Democrats are idiots and I do not want them running our government; and I hope that when it comes for re-election of these people, that voters would reconsider who these people are that are running on the ballot, and are they willing to help the American people or themselves and their own agenda. I do pray to GOD for this country and its people, Pres. Trump, VP Pence, those doing GOD's will and what HIS word says, for you, Mike Huckabee, and that the blinders would come off of people's eyes to see the truth, that people would come to a knowledge of GOD's salvation through Jesus Christ, protection from the enemies, and I pray for Israel. hanks to Pres. Trump for stand beside Israel as our ally; and for saying, "In GOD we trust!" If we don't have GOD in our lives, we have nothing! Thanks for letting me express a bit of what I believe! This was a heartfelt and sincere SOTU. It was positive and encouraging. I loved the way Trump referred to "citizens" regularly. Pelosi and Schumer's slumping pouting demeanor showed how juvenile they are. They couldn't even manage to stand or clap for things they support. Hopefully blacks noticed the Black Caucus not standing or applauding about low black unemployment. Time to wake up to their "leaders". Kudos Mr. President!

Thank you Governor. My husband and I did not watch the speech as we are teaching in China because we cannot afford Healthcare in our own country. We even decided to have his hip replaced here because it would be cheaper. We have two sons who are both in the military because we raised them with the belief service to others before self. We taught on an Apache Indian reservation and at impoverished hispanic schools out West because we believed those principals. The Left would have you believe that we are dumb and racist. Obviously you can see we are neither. I pray that during this speech, more of the American people will see these folks for what they truly are. People who are tearing us apart by putting labels on everyone, pushing an agenda for the few, keeping the impoverished dependent on them and refusing to help make things better just to spite a President they don't like. Keep talking sir. May God bless.

    Mr. Huckabee,
I thought President Trump gave an excellent State of the Union speech last night. He had so many good points and was very positive and unifying in his delivery. I was very disappointed while watching the NBC Nightly News this evening that the President's speech was not mention, nor shown, at any time during the news. They did show a few seconds of a video showing him at the talk. I think it's sad that, when President Trump gives such an excellent speech, it isn't even acknowledged during the newscast. I think we can rest assured that, if it were President Obama giving the speech, NBC would have covered it quite well during their newscast.

Most telling were the number of times he looked at the camera and said "You the American people" And "We" peppered his speech, Very seldom did he use "I" and "my"in stark contrast to the faggot before him who was in no way a president. If the camera was scanning on the childish behavior of the dems and the black caucus especially, it showed all of us who they were for and it is NOT us. Some of those dems will be remembered in November for the shut down and their behavior during the speech. This is a telling moment. I guess dems and Rinos can't handle success...especially if they can't take credit for it. Sad.

President Trump truly knows how to connect with the people. Democrats displayed how they do not intend to be in touch with the American people. The Dems must be paying more attention to a few billionaire donors than their own base. At the same time, the DNC is bankrupt. President Trump has skillfully claimed all of the centrist Democrat platform issues into the Republican party. There is nothing left of the Democrat party except for the extreme leftist faction - as exemplified by Joe Kennedy, who had absolutely nothing left to say except for socialistic jibberish. I voted for Donald Trump and am very proud that he is our President!

  • Curtis A Ramsey

    01/31/2018 07:17 PM

I agree totally on a bright message delivered by PRESIDENT Trump, and an equally dark message delivered by Mr Kennedy. I personslly would like to recommend that President Trump, on his next State of the Union Address, ask , for the sake of unity, that all remain seated during the address.
This would accomplish a few things: less focus on partisan politics, a shorter address with the same amount of content, and most assuredly, less stress on the backs and knees of the participants!
Of course, clapping or not clapping would still be allowed, so that individuals can express their opinions - on camera - for the sake of record to their constituents.
The current method, in my opinion is both tedious and childish. Where else is a serious presentation interrupted in this manner?
You don't see up and down votes in school assemblies, board meetings, town hall meetings, etc.
I feel this practice encourages division.

With every accomplishment he touted, I shouted "YES." I've never been so excited about the changes a President has made. I could not have been prouder of or more thankful for President Trump during his State of the Union address to the nation. I spent 50 years working in the communications field. The SOTU content was excellent (please tell his speech writers they did an A+ job); Trump's delivery masterful. The congressional democrats showed despicable behavior and acted like sulking kids -- the mainline media should have given them heck and called them on that. I hope the man I voted for has gotten his act together and can move forward as a solid good leader and not give the media reason to beat up on him. They are so out to get him --- I am sure my journalist professors are rolling over in their graves for their un-professional behavior and putrid ethics in reporting. The media is ruthless with him, and I believe there is a deep state, well funded by Soros and other to destroy him and our country. Please tell your daughter she is doing a GREAT job. As a rule I cannot stand political speeches (I tend to believe they target their audiences and further cater 100% to what they want to hear-not what the speaker thinks). But last night I watched and listened to the President give a very good and rousing speech. I felt he provided the positive motivation to help our country regain it's feet. As a retired US Navy Submarine Veteran he gave me hope that the 16+ years I spent at sea wasn't for all for nothing. The numerous deployments, missing holidays, (with Christmas always the hardest), anniversaries, birthdays, and so much more. I truly hope that he touched each listener as he did for me.

I agree with your review, Mike. It was a great speech, masterfully delivered, and so many inspiring moments with the guests. What a world of difference from the past 8 years! I'm rooting for the Democrats--that their behavior is going to see them being voted OUT of office!

I've never been more proud of a U.S. president than I was of ours last night. He is quickly making the kind of progress that he promised during his campaign, and that seems miraculous. I'll bet Nancy was glad when it was over so she could take out her dentures and remove whatever foreign object she kept picking at.

With all due respect and sincerity, why does anyone who calls themselves Christian and American vote for baby killing, sodomy loving, freedom hating, God hating, socialist, communist Democrats? I mean really, the Democrats voted to be one of only seven countries (that include North Korea and China) to do late term baby murder knowing that the baby feels it's limbs being torn apart!

You people that vote for these barbaric Democrat policies are not thinking with the heart of God. And NO it is no charitable want the government to force one person to pay for another's home, food, medical and housing especially if that one getting the hand out illegally broke into your home.

Did I really watch Pelosi and Schumer sit on the hands all night and with every statement of progress which will truly benefit this country, disrespect all of us as American citizens? These two and their followers just DO NOT GET IT!! Are they that ignorant of history, basic economics, the Bible, and what is right and wrong? Are they isolated, like North Korea, from the real world? Do they not understand we can not be kind to the poor, to the downtrodden, to challenged people without having the productivity, goods and services, security, hope, and without working with the President and the American people to get things done. Handwringing, smug looks, and encouraging the kind of entitlement as they do will never feed our poor, give our own minorities more opportunity, the useful knowledge they need. It only wastes time, and breeds anger as we have seen over the past 8 years. At least some cameras spotlighted their soured, ugly, faces enough times to give the nation something to think about.

Some of the TV pundits commented immediately after the speech, that they were disappointed, or that the President's opponents did not get the kind of speech that encouraged unity, as expected. What in the heck do they think they got? This speech was one of the most hopeful, uniting, and encouraging speeches I have heard in 9 years. The President gave credit to America's people for getting these accomplishments done or started. He did not take personal credit for it as some talking heads claimed. It is a shame that so many people JUST DON'T GET IT.
