It’s been said that one of the greatest tools of tax-and-spend politicians is withholding, because they get to take your money out of your paycheck before you see it, so you don’t realize how much taxes are costing you. But sales taxes are another matter: those you have to pay for, right at the cash register. One CostCo in Seattle is making darn sure customers know that a new tax on sugary beverages is the reason why they’re suddenly paying almost twice as much for sodas and energy drinks – and that CostCos outside the city limits have them for far less.

Incidentally, this story brings up a topic that’s long baffled me about liberals who use “sin taxes” to try to force people to behave in certain ways. They tax smoking, alcohol, fattening foods, etc., claiming that it’s to discourage their use (tacitly admitting that if you tax something, you get less of it, and that taxes make people change their behavior – two things they vehemently deny when conservatives point them out). Then they always claim the money is needed for necessary programs, like health care for children. But if the point of the tax is to stamp out purchases of some harmful item, why would they make funding for necessary programs dependent on people continuing to purchase the harmful item?

It makes one suspect that liberals aren’t really as determined to prevent tobacco, booze or soda companies from killing people as they are upset that the government isn’t getting a big enough cut of the profits.

I think that the all the liberal politicians are thinking of just how much more they could have in their pockets if the tax rate weren't lowered!

Hey Mike, I know several investigations are in progress. When do you think some of these people will begin serving time? I'm losing patience. Trump needs to start making examples.

I like your math on the concept of "sin taxes." I have been noting this illogic for years and asking just what happens if everyone stops purchasing the highly taxed item. Right on the money.
