We now know when to expect the Mueller report --- sometime on Thursday --- and the anticipation is making leftists go from being merely crazy to being totally screaming bonkers. The memo must have gone out to tell Democrats to try to discredit Attorney General William Barr in any way possible, even if it means criticizing him for releasing the report so close to Easter weekend (not kidding; that’s one of the things they’re complaining about). They know they may have trouble slamming Barr for redacting the report willy-nilly, as it reportedly has just a small, reasonable amount of redacting. And we all know that classified information and grand jury testimony must by law remain redacted. But...Easter!

Yesterday, I showed how the media are already working to shape the narrative, and there are far too many examples of this to even scratch the surface. Mostly, they want to do three things: 1) justify the appointment of a special counsel in the first place (absent any crime; that makes it hard) and Mueller’s many months of conducting anal exams, 2) gloss over the fact that no case could be made for conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, which is what this was supposed to be about, and 3) stress that Congress still has the power to impeach whether they have clear evidence of wrongdoing or not. So impeachment is what many Democrats in Congress will still push for, regardless of what the report says.

Our sympathies and prayers

By Mike Huckabee

On behalf of myself and my staff, I wish to extend our sympathies and prayers to the people of France and to Catholics worldwide after the devastating fire that ravaged the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris yesterday.  It’s said that if the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris, Notre Dame is France, representing its faith, culture and history.  Shocked bystanders watched as firefighters fought the blaze, praying and singing hymns as the famous 300-foot-tall Gothic spire that was once the tallest structure in Paris collapsed and fell. It’s suspected that the blaze started due to chemicals from an ongoing restoration project, but that’s not yet officially determined.

This story from the Daily Mail probably features the most photos, videos, history and information of any I’ve found.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6925015/Fire-breaks-historic-Notre-Dame-cathedral-Paris.html

But with the sunrise in Paris came some hopeful news.  One firefighter was badly injured, but there were no fatalities.  While the Cathedral suffered massive damage, particularly to the roof, much of the building appears to have miraculously survived. The Paris fire chief said “the worst had been avoided” and “we can consider that the main structure of Notre Dame has been saved and preserved,” as well as the two towers. Many of the statues had already been removed prior to the restoration work, and people formed human chains to remove priceless artworks and religious relics.  And as sad as the loss of the famous spire is, it was added in the 1860s and wasn’t an original part of the Cathedral.

Experts had warned for years that the Cathedral was badly in need of restoration, but the government was reluctant to allocate the money, offering only about a fourth of the $170 million estimate. Private donors were being sought to try to make up the difference.  But to quote the great philosopher Joni Mitchell, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone.”  President Macron announced a fund drive to hire the best talents to rebuild and restore the Cathedral, and French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault (husband of actress Salma Hayek) pledged 100 million euros (about $113 million) to kick it off.  Fellow billionaire Bernard Arnault, owner of the luxury goods group LVMH (Moet, Louis Vuitton, etc.), then pledged $226 million.  Darn those evil billionaires.

It’s a terrible loss, but maybe having to rebuild it will serve as a painful reminder of the importance of the culture, history and religious faith that it stands for and that too many people in recent years have forgotten or turned their backs on.  It’s also a reminder that as beautiful, important and historic as a building may be, it is still only stones and wood, and subject to the elements.

Let us never forget that what the Cathedral stands is eternal and can never be destroyed by fire, wind or flood.  That is faith in Jesus Christ, who “continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently” (Hebrews 7:24), is “with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20), and “is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8.)

WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE MUELLER REPORT, here's some Journalism 101

By Mike Huckabee

In the calm before the storm that is the release of the Mueller report (at this writing, we’re still waiting), it’s been interesting to compare and contrast various media reports and musings. A relatively straightforward news account from THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ends with this:

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) has made clear that barring a bombshell revelation in the Mueller report, she doesn’t expect her caucus to launch impeachment proceedings. ‘Impeachment is divisive for the country,’ Mrs. Pelosi said in an interview last week. ‘I set a very high bar to cross that threshold because, really, people want us to address their financial securities or insecurities, and that’s our responsibility.’"

Setting aside the question of whether we want the Democrats in Congress addressing anything about our financial lives (short answer: OH DEAR, NO!), let’s contrast this passage with the ending of a REUTERS piece (thankfully identified up front as “Analysis,” but still) on the same subject:

A brilliant suggestion

By Mike Huckabee

The brilliance of President Trump’s suggestion that he might bus illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities just becomes more apparent by the minute. Calling their bluff was all it took for the liberal creators and proponents of sanctuary cities to start melting down in public like ice sculptures on the Fourth of July.

“Compassionate” California leftists such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Gov. Gavin Newsom must have sent their aides to fetch thesauruses to provide them with new words for how OUTRAGEOUS it was for Trump to suggest that we send illegal immigrants to states and cities whose leaders said they would be welcome with open arms because they contribute so much more to the community than they cost.  Here are just a few terms they hurled at Trump:

Pelosi: “Cruel,” “cynical,” “despicable,” “criminal”…Newsom:  "unserious," "illegal," "asinine," "sophomoric," “ludicrous,” “petulant,” “sophistry,” “insulting,” “immoral,” “pathetic,” “demoralizing,” “un-American” and “illegal.”

A Salon thing

By Mike Huckabee

I already wrote about the spectrum of bias in press coverage of the Mueller report.  But of course, that’s hardly the only story for which you have to “consider the source” before believing it.

For instance, a story about the Administration’s environmental policies appeared in Salon.com (which I would never mistake for a legitimate, unbiased news source) with a provocative headline claiming that a Trump official declared that “Science is a Democrat thing.”  It’s such a load of garbage (complete with quotes from a group that poses as a nonpartisan pro-science organization but isn’t) that I’m not going to increase their click count by linking to it.  But here’s a sample:

“Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Calif., citing the inspector general's report into the matter, said that a Trump appointee named Landon ‘Tucker’ Davis had offered a likelier explanation for why a study that was more than halfway done was abruptly shut down: In Davis' words, ‘Science was a Democrat thing.’"

Spinning

By Mike Huckabee

Seth Meyers announced that his late night NBC show will expand to 90 minutes on Thursday to do a “deep dive” into analyzing the Mueller Report and putting it in “context,” and that his guest will be Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. So good news: if you think a late night comedian is qualified to analyze a 400-page legal investigative report in a matter of hours, then you probably also think the mayor of South Bend is qualified to be President, so set your DVRs, this is the show for you!

I think I'd rather stay up late, listening for the distant humming sound of Johnny Carson spinning in his grave.

Correction

By Mike Huckabee

Correction to a story from last week: the substance that a loud leftist protester squirted at conservative speaker Michael Knowles at the University of Missouri-Kansas City was not bleach, as first reported.  It’s assumed that the assailant must have known that a bleach attack would be a serious violation, so the substance used was a mixture of lavender oil and other nontoxic household liquids meant to resemble bleach.  He’s still facing charges, though, which is good.

Also, good for the college for taking free speech seriously and providing security officers who did their job.  It’s a shame they had to ruin it by issuing a statement condemning violent, censorious protesters that spent more time attacking the speaker for his conservative beliefs than it did condemning violent, censorious protesters.

Cortez and her four friends

By Mike Huckabee

Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a dismissive comment about people who have a large number of Twitter followers when what Democrats need is a large number of votes on the House floor (gee, I wonder who she was talking about?)  Sunday on “Sixty Minutes,” she made it even clearer that she’s feeling like a put-upon Romper Room teacher whose charges had too much sugar for breakfast when she brushed off the loud, demanding leftist media darlings such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by saying that far-left wing of the party is “like, five people.”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/nancy-pelosi-aoc-ocasio-cortez-progressive-5-people

She’s right that there are only a handful of these freshman radicals in the House (and what a handful they are!), but they represent a pretty large number of sadly misinformed young Democratic voters, which spells trouble for the Party in finding candidates who can win a Democratic Primary without repulsing most voters in the general election.

Her TV comments aren’t likely to calm the brewing clash between the old guard like Pelosi who want to at least keep up the pretense of being moderate, pro-business and pro-capitalism and the young firebrands who think the key to victory is badmouthing America, extolling socialism and calling anyone who objects a sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic Nazi.  While I personally find the latter group repugnant, I wish them well in keeping up that electoral strategy right through 2020.
