A Democratic strategist is handicapping the leading party candidates for 2020 (a dumb idea: this far out, who would’ve predicted that Barack Obama would be the nominee in 2008, or Donald Trump in 2016?) But just for fun’s sake: he’s concerned that there’s no big star in the bunch. Looking at names like Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, he said there are a lot of Celine Dions, but no Beatles.
This illustrates one of the biggest problems with politics today, and the Democrats in particular: the “cult of personality” trap. The leading Dem candidates have plenty of weaknesses (some are older than dirt, others think socialism actually works, etc.), but their strategists’ biggest concern is the lack of star quality. If you want a star, run Kevin Spacey: he’s plenty liberal, and his schedule is probably pretty open for the foreseeable future.
But how about considering this for a weakness? It’s the most difficult and important executive job in the world, and not a single one of those people has five minutes of executive experience. The only thing they’ve ever run is their mouths. Liberals claim Trump is unqualified, but he ran a multi-billion-dollar, international business empire for decades. The only thing they could name that Obama had run was his own presidential campaign.
As the ratings for the Emmy and Oscar Awards have shown, Americans are tired of being lectured to by charismatic liberals with no real world knowledge or experience. Frankly, I think this strategist owes an apology to Celine Dion. She’s run her career very successfully for many years, providing employment for a platoon of musicians, dancers, roadies, accountants and more. That makes her far more qualified to be a chief executive than Liz, Bernie or Kamala.
