It’s been one year since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau crushed the Freedom Convoy protests, in which truckers demanded their civil rights back from draconian COVID policies. Trudeau called them “racist” and “misogynistic,” blamed them for COVID deaths, prosecuted and jailed them and destroyed their businesses, accused them of “shouting and waving swastikas,” and described them as a “fringe minority” with “unacceptable views.”

Well, one year later, he’s had some time to chew that over, and he’s arrived at the conclusion that maybe he went a little too far.  The National Post reports that Trudeau expressed regrets, saying, “I wish I had phrased that differently,” and added, “The fact is there is a very small number of people in this country who deliberately spread misinformation and disinformation that led to Canadians’ deaths that lead to excessive hardship in people who believe them. But that is a small subset of people who were just hurting and worrying and wanting to be heard.”

Oh, well, live and learn! No harm done, right? I mean, except to every Canadian citizen. But before he forgives himself and moves on, I’d like to point something out. This sorry episode shows that it doesn’t take a large number of people spreading misinformation and disinformation to lead to deaths and excessive hardship. It just takes one arrogant jerk at the top.
