America's Pastor Passes - My Show Monologue

February 26, 2018 |

As America continued to debate the tragic school shooting in Parkland, FL, news broke that America’s Pastor, Dr. Billy Graham had died at his home in Charlotte at the age of 99, just a few months shy of his 100th birthday.

My first reaction was “Now there’s a real example of ‘Fake News.’” Billy Graham has passed from this earthly life, but he is anything but dead. He is more alive now than ever before, and living a life that will never end. And if he isn’t, then everything he stood for and preached to millions is a cruel hoax. Some might try to say that Billy Graham was a good man, but would argue there isn’t a God or an afterlife. Sorry, but that’s not a defensible position. If Billy Graham spent his entire adult life preaching a lie and urging people to follow a lie, then he’s hardly a “good man.” At best he would a man himself duped by spiritual fantasy and who sincerely pushed others to a belief in a fairy tale. That’s not the mark of a “good man.” Billy Graham didn’t preach a message of just going around and being polite and kind. He preached that all of us are sinners and in need of a Saviour, and that the Saviour is Jesus Christ.

That was the message of Billy Graham’s life. Didn’t matter if he was talking to Presidents, Popes, Prime Ministers, or ordinary people. His message was the same for all of his decades of proclaiming the Biblical admonition to repent.

He would be criticized and sometimes held in contempt by the elites and academics for such a simple message, but while the critics came and went, Billy Graham never turned to the right or left, but kept his eye on the Cross.

His personal life was marked by financial and personal integrity. Constantly under assault by those who tried to catch him in either a financial or moral failure, he lived a circumspect life and went beyond reason to stay pure in his life so that his message was never compromised. There were no scandals. He never claimed to be perfect—just preached about one who was.

Commentary continues below advertisement

His influence was larger than any of the people who temporarily held an office or had a fortune. His power was never his, but that of Christ, and his fortune was massive, but not on earth, but stored in the incorruptible vaults of heaven.

We should be grateful to God to have lived during the time of the most influential human being in our lifetime and the most potent force of Christianity since the Apostle Paul.

That his death would come as Americans argued over why a teenager would savagely murder 17 people in a school is itself a message. The culture Billy Graham helped to influence meant that at my high school, there were lots of guns at school. They were in gun racks in the rear window of pickup trucks on the school parking lot. But no one ever thought of taking one of them and slaughtering students and teachers; or bombing the school or driving a vehicle on a busy sidewalk and mowing down pedestrians. We were raised by parents who taught us right from wrong, and we lived in an era where God was taken seriously. Billy Graham was a big part of that.

To his family, we extend our profound condolences, but to God we extend our profound thanks for sending this man to earth. We sure could use another like him now.

    Dear Sir,
Here is a poem that GOD gave me about the president and our country. GOD made me a poet I didn't choose to be one. HE woke me in the middle of the night with poems in my mind that I couldn't stop thinking about until I wrote them out. This happened on a continuous basis several time a week for more than a year. When GOD says your a poet or anything else. Then that is what you are period end of story.
Anyways, here is the poem that I would like to share with you, her and anyone else your led to share it with.

    President Trump

He is trying to walk as a Christian man
serving GOD in the best way he can
his heart’s desire is to serve all Americans
to unite our country so it will always stand
for our country’s freedoms to fulfill GOD’S plan
people would so divide us to make the US fall
but it isn’t for the minority to make that call
they tear down statues honoring brave confederate men
their beliefs aren’t ours now but all are still Americans

Where will this hate cancer infecting our country end?
it is like we have collectively gone around the bend
political and self ambitions dividing into small groups
throwing our country for one heck of a hard loop
fighting hand to hand like an invasion of foreign troops
how much lower can these so called Americans stoop
they scream lives matter but their lives matter more
all they’re really doing is cutting America to the core

Where is the silent majority that truly loves our country?
illegals don't have any right to free entry
Right or wrong it is the best country on this earth
it isn’t perfect but it is the nation our forefathers gave birth
GOD’S grace gave it to us through blessing and mortal men
how then can these minority groups demand perfection when
all of us are not and never will be perfect now or then
but are they so perfect and without sin
that they can claim the right to condemn?

They throw stones of words thinking their judgment righteous
all the time they are false, lying to themselves being disingenuous
spreading hatred malice advocating violence to get their own way
attempting to silence all opposition to prevent them having their say
we don’t have to agree with everything that is said
but our guaranteed freedoms through our honored dead
say we have the right to voice what we choose
if we allow any of our freedoms to be taken we all loose
President Trump in his attempts to draw us together
has been cursed and verbally attacked like no other

Where is our "All American Common Sense"
putting our country, its values first, standing in Her defense?
America in all Her glory now faces some hard truths
she does not deserve to be battered and abused
Stand up American silent majority raise your voice and speak
America needs all of you to reach this mountain peak
Christians of all parties need to fervently pray
for a graceful ending to this turmoil and satanic fray
if you’re part of the violence YOUR the problem not the solution
the answer is not self destruction and violent revolution

So stop and think before you act, reach out an open hand
become part of the salve that heals our hurting, broken land
if all Americans will pray, work and come together as one
all the damage to our country can be easily undone
time to set aside our differences and go before GOD
though a minority might fight it and think that idea is odd
HE is the only one that can heal our beloved land
make a divided and torn nation as one people stand
healing our nation making America, Great Once Again
    _______________________________________________________________________
I would appreciate any and all feed back good or bad. It will help me to improve as the writer/poet GOD has called me to be.
My background before GOD started this was I had never read ANY poetry except in greeting cards and I rarely read that. I never read any poetry in school at all. I have a masters in Ed /rehabilitation counseling. Much to my detriment I was never exposed to any poetry all through school. Up to the time GOD decided to change things I had absolutely no interest in poetry or writing whatsoever. Now I love it and enjoy reading, writing and learning how to write more effectively.
    Best regards,

    Dear Sir,
I am writing you in hopes that you might pass these words of encouragement on to your daughter. I would like her to know this. she is admired and greatly respected by a large majority of Americans. We admire her ability to stand up for what she knows is right. Before a press corps that is for the most part biased and hostile toward her and the president. We both know that this strength comes from the HOLY SPIRIT within her and the anointing that GOD has placed upon her lips. Allowing her to speak the words HE has given her. Our LORD has placed her in an extremely difficult and challenging position. He uses her daily in a very mighty way to help fulfill HIS plan for our country. Tell her to stay strong. Our country the real majority of our country are behind and support her efforts to do an outstanding job for the president and for us the American people. I for one am a part of that majority, I would like to say on behalf of that silent majority. Thank you Sara, foe your service to all of us it is appreciated.
    Best regards,

Thank You Mr Huckabee, for your wonderful commentary on Rev. Billy Graham. He was truly one of God's Blessings to all of us. He not only talked the talk but he also walked the walk, with every footprint he made.

I agree that we were indeed most blessed to live at this point in history. It breaks my heart to see generations of people who are ignorant of the wonderful gift God is offering them. The rules (10 Commandments) were removed and acknowledging God and Jesus forbidden and we as a nation are reaping what we have sowed. Christians know the true root of all the evil in this world.

The King James Bible would be an excellent textbook even for a atheist. If you read it an had a dictionary nearby , you would have a written, oral, and vocabulary level beyond any BS American college degree. In most inner city schools, this book alone could excel in developing : English language proficiency, literature, history, law, ethics, justice, purpose in business, and fortitude in the ubiquitous struggles of all human life. Replace the English agenda and place this in the agenda. Even the Devil knows his fate in the Bible. However, math, biology, chemistry, physics, foreign language, computer science, agriculture science, and all high tech material would be necessary. However, the King James would get you to a level to compete with the best of scholars.

Mike, I know you are also a Baptist preacher, and I mean no insults. Billy Graham's central theme all during his preaching life was "eternal salvation" for the whole human race, IF, they would only do some work or make some personal effort to accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior. He should have been teaching our timely salvations here in this life and leave our eternal salvation to the finished work of Christ on the cross. God chose, elected and predestinated His people to eternal glory before the world even began. The new birth (regeneration) is not gained by our works, but it is "given" to His elect people at some time from conception in the womb to our last breath of life. (John 17:2) (Acts 13:48) (Rom. 5:21, 6:23) (I John 5:11, 20) God's election is a work of His grace, not according to our works. Regeneration (new birth) is the effectual call of God and it is irresistible in the chosen of God. Many other scriptures could be given. Billy Graham taught many good things and he was a good man, but his theme of preaching was in error. (Submitted in respect for you and Billy Graham).

I listened to Billy Graham all of my life. I am 71, and I cannot remember a time when Bro. Graham was not preaching the Gospel around the world. Yes, he is an ICON that will not be easliy forgotten and put in the cyber- trashcan. Frank is OK, but, his daddy was top drawer material. Thank you Bro. Mike for your wonderful articles. I thoroughly enjoy reading from your posts. I also admire your daughter. She is cut from a strong cloth, and you have every reason to be proud of her. She is a wonderful person.

Dear Governor Huckabee my comment to you is I do believe in gun ownership my husband owns guns but I do have to say I do not like some of these automatic rifles that have humongous clips. I do not understand the purpose of having them and it only seems like the bad people use them. I would like to know what you think about this particular subject. I would be pleased if you could email me with your answer.

Governor thank you for your straight forward commentary. America is in trouble as you report. Political Leaders in Washington have taken our moral compass as a nation and crushed it under their egotistical government knows all views. GOD is no longer a part of our Government. GOD is not in our Schools. The BIBLE is no longer the voice of the one true GOD but a book to be questioned and compared to man's literary works. Our direction as a nation is now wholly man's immoral views with out our GOD's guidance. The Great man of GOD Rev. Billy Graham can no longer counsel our Leaders.

Thank you for your article about Rev Graham. My husband and I went to a crusade in 1992 in Philadelphia. We were just overjoyed as we were new Christians at the time. He was truly an amazing man of God.
I also want to thank you for your always sensible, TRUTHFUL responses on the events in our country. You are always fair and always throw in a bit of humor as well. ??Thank you for being a constant source of truth and common sense in this fast paced world. Well written Mr Huckabee. Some 43 years ago laying in my living room after working all day as a carpenter, I turned on the t V. Bro. Graham was preaching on one of the three channels we had. I almost turned it to another channel, but I didn't. Pretty soon it bro. Billy on the TV and me and the Holy Spirit in the room. I gave myself to Jesus that night. For the last seven years after teaching construction classes in high school, I was called to pastor a cowboy church. I praise the Lord for His message of salvation he sent to me through Bro. Billy Graham.

Being a senior Citizen and growing up in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN, Billy Graham's name was like a close friend of the family. My parents promoted his messages. They continued to follow him when they retired in southern California - going with a bus load from their retirement community to Los Angeles to prepare for a Crusade. It is so important to note as you say in your comments that he lived the life he preached. I wish we could return to those times where there is right and wrong and consequences.

I could say more, but that is enough for now.

We started our school day by bowing our heads and praying the Lord`s prayer. Then the Pledge of Allegiance. This in a 2 room schoolhouse at Quiet Dell, West Virginia. One teacher taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. The other teacher taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. There were no assistants. On Tuesdays, my brother and I each took a dime to deposit in a savings account with our teacher. They taught us about compound interest. Our irregular verbs were learned by rote. I have never forgotten them. Beautiful memories of our school, and Mrs. Bluma Stuart, our beloved teacher.

    Amen Brother Huckabee... AMEN!!!
Since the Supreme Court 1960's decisions banning God and Jesus the Christ from public school we have seen a slow deterioration of the nation's education system and people's kindness. Now, Christianity is not tolerated at all while Islam is being openly taught. So, how well has secularization worked? When a nation turns its back on God (as described above)... God will allow leaders to rise up that will deceive the nation. Sound familiar? There is only one way to turn this nation around and it will ONLY happen when Jesus is at the center of all our lives. I pray and hope for this, but, feel we have reached our tipping point and am waiting for the proverbial straw.

Integrity, compassion, humility, and a zeal for spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, crucified for the sins of mankind and risen to conquer sin and death, to a world so desperately in need of HOPE...that was the message of Billy Graham. He was faithful to the end and had a profound influence on me and millions more. Now, finally at HOME with Jesus... Praise God!

Dr. Graham had it right. I had a near death experience when I was eighteen years old and was dead for two minutes. I met God and was held in His arms. It was the greatest experience of my lifetime. More real than anything here on Earth and I learned a lot. Our country has become a Godless country and the proof is in the news every time I turn it on. Jesus is the real deal and if more people understood why we are really here, they would stop with all the violence and hate. They think that our lives here on earth just ends when we "die". Nothing could be further from the Truth. It isn't a fantasy. What we are doing down here on Earth makes all the difference on the other side. We are very powerful spiritual beings and this life is a gift from God. We are heroes in God's mind because we took on the challenge of this world to make us stronger than ever before. Even the Angels are in awe of us because coming down here is something that they just have never done. They haven't had the chance to experience pain and suffering. So, this experience down here does something to our souls that makes us more than we could ever imagine. But, you have to accept Christ into your life to get everything out of it that you're supposed to. God is real and Dr. Graham was very much aware of this. He is living a wonderful life right now in Heaven. Our true Home.

As you said, there was never even a scandal in Billy Graham's life and ministry. He lived a life, as a Bible verse says, "above reproach." And yet, now that he has passed, there are those who have taken the opportunity to try to find fault with him and say negative things about him. I would have to assume that they are doing this just because they did not like the message he preached. Very deplorable.

I cried like a baby when I heard about his death. We hear of so many pastors falling from grace; but he is one man that would have broken many hearts if he had done so. He put on the full armour of God and stayed the course. So many looked up to this Man of God. In watching all the news about him, and watching so many people line the streets when his motorcade carrying him to his hometown passed by, I wondered what the non-Christians thought about all the coverage this man received. He got almost as much coverage as a president and I can just hear them wondering what in the world is going on. He's just a preacher and nobody believes the stuff they preach anymore. America lost one of its great evangelists, but Heaven gained a great man of God.
