I get so many letters from frustrated readers like Barbara that I thought it might be good to pass hers along, as food for thought. (Some editing has been done for clarity and length.) Barbara seems to have taken a stab at writing the Republican Party platform for 2020 --- although good luck getting money out of politics! And we’d need hard-won constitutional amendments to implement term limits and upper age limits. In many ways, though, she does reflect what’s important to all of us who care about the law, the Constitution, and basic morality and ethics.

Barbara votes for “the person” and voted for Obama; I’m sure now she can see that he wasn’t about to put through any of the reforms she lists here, and, in fact, worked actively against some of them. On the other hand, we’ve seen that even with Republicans in the House, Senate and White House (as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would call them, the three branches of government), our own party didn’t make much of a dent. We had big expectations but face huge political barriers to reform. (If only we had a barrier at the border as effective as these!) Legislators had the chance to pass some of the things Barbara suggests here, and they didn’t address them. And now, with Democrats controlling the House, we’re even farther away from making badly needed changes.

Barbara would like a fresh start when it comes to the party system and elected officeholders, and I assume she also means the non-elected officials in the “alphabet” bureaucracies such as the DOJ, FBI and IRS as well. We all hope that President Trump has a “strategery” in mind to blow things up while he’s still in a position to do so, while understanding there are reasons why he’s holding back right now.

So, what do you think of Barbara’s observations? I think she strikes a nerve. She speaks the truth when she says, “everything is upside down.” But how fed up are people going to have to get before they fight back against the radical left and put us back on track to be a nation of reason, freedom, honesty and decency? It’s going to take a huge pull in the opposite direction, which can only be accomplished by a unified party.  And it’s going to take a flood of absolutely stellar candidates for office whose principles won’t be corrupted by the system. Where will they come from?

Now, here’s Barbara’s letter:

Gov. Huckabee, I read your newsletter and feel you are a fair person. I am an average working- class person, now a retired senior. I am an Independent voter, rooted in the Democrat party, but have voted on the basis of people seeming sincere and honest for at least 25 years. I voted for the Bushes, Obama, and Trump. My family and friends are a mix of Democrats, Independents and Republicans. I am Catholic and believe everyone is equal and we were all created in God's image. I hate no one, only ugliness and meanness.

What has been happening these last two years and longer is a disgrace to our country. There is too much money and power controlling our elections. The two parties are very broken and power-hungry. The people who mean well don't have a way to make a difference.

If we, the American people, could vote today, we would abolish the parties and start fresh. How much money you have would not determine whether you are the last person standing to run for your party. There should be a budget limit of $450,000 to run your campaign –- not more than your yearly wage for that position. (The news media will run your information anyway.) Term limits and age limits (70-75) for all officeholders, including for the Supreme Court. Everyone, including all public offices and employees, would be in the Social Security system, and pensions for politicians would be lower than full salaries.

No more riders attached to bills wasting tax dollars for special interests. No more lobbyists, only straight-up public servants there for their constituents. If the government shut down ever again, the only people not being paid would be the representatives causing it, not the workers at the bottom. And they would have to stay on the job until they worked out the problem. After 30 days, it would go to the governors of the states to solve.

People are so disgusted and disillusioned with all this. We are the laughing stock of the world.

In am glad that President Trump is standing firm on the wall. The border is a huge concern, with drugs, illegal people swarming in and overwhelming our financial ability to keep our local economies going. How illegal people manage to get benefits, become eligible for voting, drive, put kids in school, and find jobs or work illegally just boggles the mind. If you are working illegally, you are not paying income taxes. We can't afford to take in every person in the world. And when people immigrate here, they should follow our laws, not bring their own.

Everything is upside down. We love our country, our heritage, our flag. Maybe all the people aren't perfect, but the foundation of our freedoms here is solid. We were founded with "freedom of religion" –- not freedom from religion. No one forces anyone to practice a religion, but don't tell us not to believe in God and practice our religion and appreciate and value morals.

We must secure our borders with a meaningful plan and act on it as soon as possible. I don't know if a wall is the best answer but doing nothing IS NOT WORKING. God Bless all our police, fire, and rescuers. When is someone going to make the homeless a priority? That is a very sad and awful thing. Drugs are destroying so many lives and breaking our families and cities. We have to find an answer. All this violence and hatred is spreading. And all this ugliness and disrespect at the top and with the media is making it worse.

The American people deserve better than this. America deserves better. Having border security and proper ways to immigrate here does not make us bad people. It is the same in other developed countries. God Bless America always.

Sorry this was so long. I am an average American. I am kind to everyone. I give to charities every month. I live on a fixed income. People like me are the silent majority.

I pray for our country. God Bless you.

I agree with Huckabee. I read your comments when they were downloaded. Great comments. Very thoughtful and great job weeding out the B.S. If only the leading politicians would do what's right for us, the citizens of this country. Put us first again instead of treating us like cattle paying taxes. That being said. Did everyone notice you barely heard a peep from the Dem politicians about destroying beautiful human life during the 2018 campaigning. Then what is there bold first moves.
Block border national crisis funding. And try to secure Infanticide. Which is nothing short of killing babies at any point during pregnancy and shortly after birth. Giving doctors the right to manipulate mostly poor naive women into feeling that's it's a viable option without repercussions, such as the removal of a wisdom tooth. And these new laws, they have shoved down the throats of every citizen in our great nation, gives these hormonal scared mother's the right to kill their miracle. Father's should have rights too. The living baby is part our child as well. Never forget this. Never relent till this barbaric practice of baby killing ends. God is real. We are with the Holy Spirit. We will take back our soul as a country! Thank you for reading my thoughts.

I agree with her letter. Iv'e never been so frustrated. Other than the tax cut bill, the Republicans had plenty of time to get much done and they did not. I will not donate to RNC but rather to the candidate that I like and President Trump. They have proven that they won't appreciate my money. There is no policy of the President that I do not support. Republicans, get behind this President and help and support him. Stand up to the radicals. Fight for us. We're watching you.

Thank you for sharing Barbara's letter. You could tell it was from the heart and it was really good. I hope and pray this happens on President Trumps watch. Term Limits needs to happen in the House and Senate. Praying for America. God help us all. Thank you Governor Huckabee for all you do.

Thank you for sharing her letter! She is Spot On! I could not have written or articulated a clearer letter of what this country needs. The big question: How do we get it started?!

Barbara is right on the money! I feel exactly the same. I’m scared for this country and all she’s fought so hard for. I’m also a senior and now am fearful of speaking up, dreading the consequences.....but there will be a point when I’d fight to my core for her. I hope I don’t have to!

Term limits and age limits for all! Politics should not be a career, and only held by people who want to build on this country’s principles, not gut them! Otherwise, they can immigrate to the place of their dreams. Recently I have embraced my religion again and love it. It brings me hope, joy, and peace. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy and celebrate my God for the rest of my life.

    Thank you for hearing me.

Governor Huckabee - I feel Barbara nailed it with her letter and I completely agree with her. Many of the folks inside the beltway are so out of touch with the American people that they have no clue how fed up we are with them and their lack of work and inability to accomplish anything! People are truly angry with their incompetence and self importance - they just need to do the job they were sent there to do! And we LOVE Sarah! Tell her to keep up the great work kicking the media's butt! She is awesome! Thanks for your patriotism and all you do for us!

Barbara hit the nail on the head. I hope there are enough of us left to effect change. Lord help us if we don’t. The recent legislation in New York should be the straw that broke the camel’s back for Christians.

Thank you for sharing Barbara’s letter. She is so dead-on right!! I agree with her wholeheartedly and am also SO tired of all this vitriol and hatred that is just not going away. I especially agree that those causing the government shutdown should have been the ones going without pay, sticking with it until the issues had been dealt with. I have thought many times that everything is so upside down. Every day....it just gets worse. ??

Barbara is so spot on. She articulated so well so much of my own thoughts. One other thing is--there should be a way to get new reporting back to real journalism--to some how prevent networks being paid to be so freaking lop-sided. There should be some method of penalizing so much of what the msm puts out--unverified "stories." They need to get back to the days of someone actually vetting the information and videos they are given--although, that would take some foot work--getting out amongst people who were at specific incidents, asking for other videos and paying attention to those videos that show their "breaking news" story is a small clip and doesn't show the entire incident. They should make sure all their shows are "opinion pieces" and NOT to be confused with news networks. The msm is pretty much at the top of those who want freedom from speech for those who do not agree with them (and most are just hacks off the street who used God knows what qualifications to get their jobs.) To pass themselves off as political analysists or journalists is a travesty.

My demographic is very similar to Barbara. I agree with everything in her letter. I have believed we need a wall for 50 years. Now our president won't use a drug lords money to build the wall. He has resources that do not include shutting down the government. We send money to so many countries to support them. We can not support the world, it's not out job. Alot of money could be freed up.

Governor, and Barbara, this letter made me cry because I agree point by point, and it’s such affirmation to my thinking. Every now and again, affirmations are needed, even though I know that I know that God’s God, and He’s still in charge.

Aren't Senator's and Representative's pensions limited by the same limits as other Gov't employees (CSRS) at 80% of the average of the highest three consecutive years salary plus unused sick leave?

I love Barbara's letter! She articulates well what many of us are experiencing. Everything is upside down & lawlessness seems to be prevailing. There is no common sense only agendas that are against the good of the American people. Hoping & praying that through President Trump (& staff) that God will stop evil & turn things around to making us a country that honors Him!!!

I agree with Barbara 100%. The issues are important to Americans and the political parties appear not to care about our wishes or expectations. Open borders in particular are purely political because they gain power and seats through the census numbers. See the uproar about asking about citizenship on the census. I could go on and on, but again Barbara is right.

    I agree with Barbara’s message.
I will turn 80 at the end of this year, and have been married nearly 60 years( to the same man????) and I fear for the future for our 7 grandchildren and 3 3/4 Great Grandchildern.
I have NEVER BEEN FEARFUL OF THE FUTURE OF THE USA — UNTIL NOW.
GOD BLESS PRESIDENT TRUMP— HE IS SWIMMING AGAINST RIP TIDES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE.
WE DESPERATELY NEED A SECURE SOUTHERN BORDER. A WALL, OF SORTS, WOULD SUFFICE.
The current Democrat Party is unrecognizable to most Patriotic Americans.
    God help us all.

Thank you Governor Huckabee! You have a great deal of common sense and very practical ideas about how to get the DO NOTHING Congress to start operating in the best interests of the United States, the American people and not the current priority stakeholders-the special interest groups. Most of these groups are very concerning. The CFR & the Tri-Lats seem to think Richard Haas is the President. This is a very dark part of what we are calling The Deep State, or The Shadow Government. These groups are not representative of the American people's interests so I'm wondering- exactly who are they representatives for? These are the funders of Antifa, Black Lives Matter, March for our lives and the rest of the INFOWAR. Strategic psyop, like a Bob Woodward creation. These shadow groups let others take the blame/credit and quietly finance the destruction of our country. We've been too complacent and trusting. Most of us aren't politicians so we're learning more about the players, their treacherous games. I appreciate your time and effort in helping spread accurate information! You have always been a favorite, I love integrity, honesty and more importantly FAITH and family. You have a great family. I can't quote well but the phrase By the fruit of his labor... You bore excellent fruit. Our household adores Sarah. Best regards, God bless you and your family and co-workers!

she feels the same as I do In fact I could be me writing that comment I have voted both dem. and repulican and I am retired and living on a fixed income the Congress has become a joke and it is time we retire all of the do-nothings if they do not want to come in and do the job they were elected to do then they should be fired just like in the real world.

Your reader, Barbara, was spot on in her letter. In everything except the "we are the laughing stock of the world." Actually, if you look around at the internal troubles of the rest of the world -- and the clumsiness and inefficiency of most of the world's elected governments -- we're actually one of the more sane examples around. Or we were, relatively speaking, before the 2018 midterms, anyway.
