President Biden and his media cheerleaders tried to convince us that the economy is doing great under the Democrats. Failing that, they tried to convince us that rampant inflation is a good thing…

How is this snowjob going? Not so well, if the latest Rasmussen survey is any indicator. It found that 57% of Americans believe the US will soon enter a “1930’s-like Depression,” with 21% thinking that’s “very likely.”

Even sadder, only 24% believe today’s children will be better off than their parents, which is one of the hallmarks of the American dream.

I don’t believe that this pessimism is based on the fundamentals of the US economy so much as lack of faith in the people currently in charge (entirely understandable) and the relentless drumbeat of negativity that’s eroded faith in the American dream and in America itself. It’s hard to believe in a bright future when you’re constantly being told that America’s past is all evil, and the world is going to end in 12 years anyway.

Or is it 10 now? I lose track because I’m old enough to have outlived at least 20 different deadlines for the end of the world. That’s one of the few good things about being older: you’ve heard all the dire predictions designed to get you to hand over your money and rights to some power-hungry charlatan, so you’re a lot less likely to get depressed enough to fall for it.

Personally, I am still optimistic. I still believe in America, I believe in the American Dream, and I think all it will take to shake Americans out of their fear of a depression is to get rid of the people who profit from depressing us. The start of that process is only about five weeks away.

Related: Axios reports that the Biden White House is planning a shake-up and reorganization of its economic team after the midterm elections. This is good news, largely because I can’t imagine that anyone new who’s brought in could possibly be worse than whoever he or she is replacing.
