Monica Lewinsky, 20 years later

February 27, 2018

It’s been 20 years since Bill Clinton ensnared himself in a legal and moral mess dubbed “the Monica Lewinsky scandal.” I always thought it should have been called “the Bill Clinton scandal,” but the Clintons had so many scandals –- about five a week, it seemed –- that we needed names to differentiate them all. For that reason, this particular scandal will always carry the name of the woman who, as a naive 22-year-old White House intern, had the misfortune of getting involved with Bill.

Lewinsky has written a thoughtful piece for VANITY FAIR that reflects her many years of self-examination and healing from the trauma she experienced. Though I might normally choose not to comment now on the choices she made 20 years ago, the fact that she has gone public with her feelings and writes so intelligently about them makes me feel that I can.

As it happens, Monica didn’t meet Ken Starr until a chance encounter at a New York restaurant on Christmas Eve of 2017. She felt uncomfortable, understandably, as she “struggled to decipher the warmth he evinced.” Reading between the lines, it seems he was just trying to be nice to her, asking her more than once if she was doing okay. But his “pastoral” demeanor creeped her out a little; she will always remember him as “the man who turned my 24-year-old life into a living hell in his effort to investigate and prosecute President Bill Clinton on charges that would eventually include obstruction of justice and lying under oath...”

It’s true that the investigation into Whitewater ended up dealing with an entirely different scandal. (Again, we’re talking about the Clintons, and there were so many!) Back then, special counsels had even wider powers than they do today. In case you’re not old enough to remember, the only reason Ken Starr ever crossed Monica’s path was because of Bill Clinton’s alleged sexual aggression towards Paula Corbin Jones. The American Spectator did an expose about Clinton’s long-ago use of Arkansas state troopers to help him procure women, and it mentioned a girl named “Paula.” Paula came forth and sued Clinton over alleged sexual advances in a Little Rock hotel room, and (this is key) the Supreme Court ruled that a sitting President could be sued in civil court, leading to depositions in which Clinton, being Clinton, blatantly lied. At that point, whatever evidence Starr could get to prove perjury and obstruction of justice was fair game, including Monica’s blue dress. It must have been a nightmare having her personal life paraded in public and, of course, being abandoned by the older, powerful man who had let her grow so close to him.

Monica has spent long years in therapy, coping with post-traumatic stress and moving forward with her life. She has obviously read widely and quotes Salman Rushdie: “Those who do not have power over the story that dominates their lives, power to retell it, rethink it, deconstruct it, joke about it, and change it as times change, truly are powerless, because they cannot think new thoughts.” She makes it clear that her healing process will never be completely over.

Commentary continues below advertisement

She credits the #MeToo movement with helping her feel supported and less alone. She regrets her choices but is just starting to realize the position she was put in by Bill Clinton. She’s always maintained that the relationship was consensual, but says, “I now see how problematic it was that the two of us ever got to a place where there was a question of consent. Instead, the road that led there was littered with inappropriate abuse of authority, station and privilege.”

And that is why it ultimately goes back to Bill. His authority, his power, his fault. That’s not what Monica says, at least in so many words. That’s what I say.

One last, curious thing. Lewinsky acknowledges that what she did was wrong and that what the President did was a “gross abuse of power,” but she has nothing negative to say here about Hillary’s behavior. Instead, she says, “We watched a First Lady and First Daughter move through the year with grit and grace.” Um, this is the First Lady who graciously called her a narcissistic loony tune and worked behind the scenes to discredit scores of erupting bimbos. Perhaps acknowledging this will play a part in the next phase of Monica’s healing.

Regarding Prayer in Schools, I chose "Separation of Church & State" because I'm afraid that allowing prayer would open this to Non-Christian prayer times during school hours. All who choose to Pray because of their beliefs, should pray privately before school , quietly before meals, in Church and when they feel moved to do so with their Family and other times i.e. Bus ride to or from school in a private manner. I am a Christian and definitely believe in the Power of Prayer! I definitely believe in the "Pledge of Allegiance" being said at the beginning of the school day and actually I feel "The Pledge" is a prayer in itself.! Beverly Francolino, Moodus, CT........

I was a Federal Manager at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. OPM guidelines were made very clear to me and my co-workers that consensual sex with a subordinate was absolutely forbidden. When a quid pro quo situation was alledged or proven you could very easily be fired.

WHAT A NIGHTMARE SHE IS LIVING THROUGH. WE CANNOT BLAME OTHERS OR ANYTHING FOR OUR FEELINGS. THERE WAS ENOUGH INNATE MORAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO HER IN ORDER FOR HER TO SAY "NO". HER DECISION WAS "YES" AND SHE CONTINUED IN THAT DECISION BECAUSE SHE ALLOWED HERSELF TO BE SWEPT AWAY EXACTLY BY THE POWER AND PRESTIGE OF THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT. I DOUBT IF SHE WOULD HAVE OFFERED HER SERVICES TO JUST ANY OTHER OLDER MAN.

    Dear Mike Huckabee:
The PA Waiver is a government paid program to pay for in home health agencies, Public Partnerships LLC, or others to come into the home of people that are unable to fully care for themselves, in order to keep them out of nursing homes and allow them to enjoy living in their home.
In the beginning, the PA Waiver allowed Power of Attorneys, and or Rep. Payees to care for their loved one and get paid. From what I understand, a few relatives put down hours that they were not working. The law then forbade POA’s and Rep. Payees to get paid to care for their loved ones.
I’m not saying this didn’t happen, but there are thousands more in “in home health agencies” that arrive late, leave early, sleep on the job, steal clothes, money, instruments, sit around watching their butts get bigger, buy what they want with the client’s money, can’t cook, give them beans out of a can, make the bed with diarrhea in it, take the client’s home to clean their own house and ignore the client’s home, leave the oven on and punch out and could have burnt the house down with the client in it, and when fired, kidnap the client.
I am begging you to be the one who is responsible for saving many vulnerable seniors who don’t have anyone to be their voice. If you would pretty please sponsor and pass a bill allowing POA’s and Rep Payee’s to get paid to care for their loved ones, you would save millions of lives. You know, no one loves you like your family.
I would be willing to have surprise inspections weekly or whatever it would take to make them feel confident that my Dad is cared for a thousand times better than aids that are out of jail, or just working to keep their welfare benefits, or working to steal.
My Dad is alive in spite of the “aids.” What about the seniors with no one to advocate for them?
One aid, fed Dad with cheese and bread to keep him constipated, when told not to. Dad didn’t have a bowel movement for 3 months and almost died! They had to dig a softball of feces out of him. Then, he filled up the portable commode. He lost 3 inches off his waist.
I am willing to testify in front of Harrisburg and Washington D.C. politicians. This atrocity must be outlawed.
Enclosed are pictures. I hope they outrage you as much as me.
    Thanks for your time.

    Sincerely Yours,

    Ruth Ann Giaimo

Surgery and sin leaves scar tissue that usually leaves pain that we can't normally change ourselves. Scar tissue of the 'soul' requires healing by the great physician, JESUS CHRIST, in our heart. Has Monica consulted Him and invited Him into her heart?

I understand that Ms Lewinsky wants to be accepted by society. It really does not matter what she says today. What she tricked with her dishonest girlfriends was not correct. And the pie she brought to Pres,Clinton was not kosher hey, maybe cocaine topped ? I think that they are all quiet stupid and cheap in their attitude and belong to a society we do not want to live in.

First of all I have never liked Bill Clinton, I think he's a lech, a friend knew him as Gov of AK & was 'exposed' to his 'tasteless' behavior towards women!

When the story broke I was in my mid 30's & thought it was a disgusting story but was not surprised at slick Willies behavior and thought the young intern was a 4 letter word I won't use here. Then after more info came out I thought, wow, if the situation had been different, in that he was not President of the U.S. her father would probably have more things to say about this 'old' man taking full advantage of a 22 year old impressionable young lady working as an intern thinking she was on the path to a career possibly in the political world! I know later when our daughters were in their early 20's I thought about it, I would NOT have been silent if someone with his power and influence and of his age had pursued one of them! The Clinton's are responsible for destroying this young woman, her career and almost any self respect she could ever have. It's a shame that a civil suit wasn't pursued by her for the lifetime of judgement she's had to endure!

I was naive enough to believe he was completely telling the truth about "not having sexual relations with that woman". I remember it like it was yesterday. I think I have post traumatic stress from that alone.

Thank you for your well thought comments on this story. It amazes me what the Clintons have gotten away with for so many decades. They seem to be a power hungry, greedy couple that would do anything to further themselves and their agenda which seems to be to gain more power, fame and money. That only ends in an eternity of suffering. As for Monica Lewinsky, I believe that Bill Clinton took full advantage of his power and position to satisfy his desire and Monica was the brunt of it. This 22 year old woman must have had strong feelings for him and heaven only knows what he told her. Probably promising all sorts of things that he had no intention of delivering. I do hope that the Clintons are brought down but also know that God has a plan and that the sun shines on both the good and the evil. Truth will win in the end.

Though I believe a 22 year old woman should know the difference between right and wrong and that messing around with a married man is wrong, I agree that Clinton is doubly responsible because of his position and power. However, this case is one of the first high-level events that should have been a warning of the culture in which we live. When we took God out of our educational facilities in 1963, we sewed the beginning of a storm. Bill/Monica reflected the decades of an immoral Godless culture and was the beginning of the hurricane that has developed recently with the sexual abuse environment that has been exposed. Numbers 32:23 says "...be sure your sin will find you out." This I believe applies to individuals as well as a culture! May God have mercy on our country.

Hi Mike, - "unrelated comment" (I read some of the others) - in Grammar School ("grade school"?) in the 6-8th grade the boys brought their guns (mostly .22s) to school (1946) and the teacher stacked them in a corner and gave them back after school. The teachers weren't armed (unless you call a "battle ax Mom" who taught 6-8th grades with one of her kids in the 7th grade "unarmed"). She was a great lady and her kid was my friend. She kept a tight rein and did whatever needed doing when it was needed. Of course, she would be in jail today for some of her teaching, but we sure did learn. Even the kid whose head she bashed into the desk (for "scholastically" abusing another classmate) until he wised up (in about two seconds) and turned out to be a great kid and married one of my high school friends (gone now). I just thought that you would like to know - that times have changed (in case you haven't noticed...). Bob B

I'm not sure about things I receive in my email and when this was about Monica I wondered why dig it up again. I thought, is this really Mike Huckabee?? But I believe it is and appreciate your remarks. I always felt too that Monica was the kid and CLinton was the adult and the fault was mostly with him. So thanks for all you do. God bless you. I am so thankful we have wonderful people like you and Sarah helping President Trump. I find it very interesting that the Clintons have managed to stay above any form of punishment, walk with their heads high as though they've never done anything wrong, without the Dems doing anything to discredit them - and - former President Obama can still get away with things like the weapons trade (GIFT?) to Iran among other misdeeds - yet - President Trump gets consistently bombarded to the point there's a COURSE being touted to IMPEACH PRESIDENT TRUMP - give me a break!

Thank you SO MUCH for your consistent work to get the TRUTH imparted to the AMERICAN PEOPLE!

Because of the outright lies of then President Bill Clinton, Kenneth Starr led an investigation in reference to Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones that cost the taxpayers millions of dollars (one estimate is 70 million). Why isn't Bill Clinton being held accountable for the cost to the taxpayer because of his lies, he caused monetary damages to the people of the U.S.

I remember Ms. Lewinski and the Bill Clinton scandal, and I am truly glad she has somehow managed to make peace with what must have been a nightmare that never really ended for her. Bill Clnton is the one who should be ashamed of himself. For ruining that young lady's life and also for setting a standard of corruption for the Democratic Party that has continued to this day. It's time -- after 20 years, outrageously past due -- that our attorney general and congress investigates and prosecutes the Clinton legacy of lies and corruption. And may God bless Ms. Lewinski and anyone who has been victimized by the corruption of power. They can and do overcome, but must teach their children well.

Sorry, Governor, I beg to differ. Lewinski's account is not an intelligent analysis of what happened, rather it shows a remarkable lack of emotional and intellectual evolution. Why would she imagine that Ken Starr might apologize to her? What was "creepy" about his being pleasant to her? Why use scare quotes when she alludes to the President's lying- as if to suggest that it was something else? And to identify for a second with the MeToo women is absurd- there was never an implied use of Clinton's power to pressure her into a relationship. The affair was totally consensual. She's 44 now but still has a lot of growing-up to do.

It is my remembrance and understanding of the Monica L. scandal that the only person who got fired or who lost his/her position was Linda Tripp (sp?).

She was later reinstated, but the fact of the matter is, when whales fight, shrimp get hurt. It is little wonder that there is such a deep moral morass in the politics of Washington D. C. when the innocent are sacrificed to the evil desires of those in power and have little protection from the law. Im my humble opinion, of course.

Mr. Huckabee, I do appreciate your wisdom and insight into these matters. thank you so much for having the courage to share them.

I watched Monica on a Ted Talk. She was wonderful - poised, well spoken and a very smart gal. My heart goes out to her because I think she really loved Bill Clinton and got caught in a snare. I pray that she can overcome her lack of self worth. She is a beautiful, worthy person and God loves her just as he loves all of us. We all have made mistakes but thankfully they weren't displayed in the public's eye. I always felt so sorry for Monica. She didn't deserve the treatment she got from the Clintons. I just can't believe what Bill and Hillary have gotten away with all these years. They too will face judgement day and will pay for their sins which are far greater than those of Monica Lewinsky.

I just can't believe that a State Governor, specifically Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, would suggest that President Donald Trump needs to tweet less and "Listen" more. "I just suggest we need a little less tweeting here and a little more listening," It is obvious that he was not listening when President Trump clearly stated / suggested that teachers be allowed to take training and carry concealed weapons to deter would-be school attackers. No one has ever suggested that "ALL" teachers should be armed. I wonder how some of these people get to be Governors, Senators or elected to any other high level government office. This guy seemed to have just pushed his prerecorded "Play" button and then most likely sat back down and turned off his listening capabilities.

As much as I dislike the Clintons and what they did to our country, I still think there was more at work here than just an affair with a young woman. Sex was Bill Clinton's Achilles heal and there were powers in Washington that knew this and used it. I never thought anyone would save evidence on a dress for six months like Monica did and also Linda Tripp surprisingly left the country after the scandal.

I have always followed current events thanks to my father. He took two newspapers and always watched the news. I remember the daily reports about the Monica Lewinsky and Bill and Hillary Clinton. I could say I am also a #Me Too survivor, but I don't want to let a lot of people know. God rescued me. I love men--most of the ones I know are good, kind and decent men. I have a wonderful husband who supported me whenever I had problems. I have two sons, and I tried to teach them about how to treat women. I also have a daughter who was a very young victim of an assault. It has colored all her life and choices. I pray that she will turn back to to the Lord. A well-written article that underlines what "swamp" came to mean for us in the past couple of years. Ms, Lewinsky's PTSD interim report underscores that the dirt that the Clintons drug into the White House will never be vacuumed away. The subtext is that Slick Willie wasn't the only one who victimized her. She recognizes the callous coercion of Starr but has she has yet to pull the scales off of hey eyes to see the cold-hearted contempt of Slick Hillie, and, further, the abandonment of her by the commercial gender warriors of that time.

Have watched the Clinton saga over the years. It still is somewhat amazing that they have yet to "pay the piper." If there is ANY justice, in this world, they should both be doing the perp walk. We had a friend here in the Seattle area who was on a local police force. Bill came to town and our friend, who I will call Paul, was on Bill's protection duty. These guys were required to find different girls every night to visit Bill. Paul, who was a devout Christian and went to our church, refused. I don't remember much else about the conversation we were having, but I remember thinking it was awful.

Monica Lewinsky deserves a lot of credit for the grace she displays, considering that her name has been cruelly turned into a punchline. The facts say it all: she was 22, and Bill Clinton was the most powerful man in the world. I know few women who, under the same circumstances, would not have yielded to that temptation. The best thing Ms Lewinsky can do now is shut out the ridiculing voices, and become the accomplished woman she is capable of being. Judging by this report, she is well on her way.

I am praying for Monica to get completely healed through the cross of Calvary. God loves her very much and wants her to live a life free of this horrible abuse encounter with one of the former Presidents of our country . Misusing his power and his relationship to his wife his child all the citizens of the USA and most of all to our heavenly Father. He needs Jesus as well. God will forgive if he will humble himself and admit his sins to God and ask forgiveness for this abuse and ask everyone else he has offened and has misused.
Monika needs to know Jesus loves her and forgives her. I'm thankful she is humble and admits her sin . We all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.
My prayers are for her to come to Jesus and realize He loves her and there are people who care and want to see her healed througn the blood of our Savior who can and who will.

I, too, read Monica Lewinsky's piece. My heart went out to her, as I don't think enough people think about people involved in situations that make their name a household word. I didn't, and I am so sorry for that. I prayed about my shortcoming and for Monica's complete healing.

I absolutely think that Bill Clinton abused his power. That's what elites do. 'Nuff said. Monica accepts accountability for her role in an adulterous affair and That's good, too. I was impressed with how she processed everything. At church last Sunday the subject was "Do the Work" it takes to stay on the path with the Lord. To be faithful in the small things leads to bigger things. Yet we can do the right things for a long time but can blow it in a weekend! That's what happened to Monica Lewinsky, and the ripple effect continues. Satan tries so hard to tempt us and knows our weaknesses. That's why we must plug, in to our faith and grow in it. Consequences are far reaching. We are able to recover through God's mercy and grace but the path is more difficult I think.

I agree that what Monica said about Hillary & Chelsea Clinton was gracious, yet I don't think Hillary deserved that grace. She is vicious and has no compassion for anyone. She is self-absorbed and will destroy anyone in her way. I pray for the Clinton's. I can't imagine having a heart that is so hard that love doesn't penetrate it.

I feel that Monica Lewinsky is still buying into a leftist narrative. I pray for truth to prevail and I trust in the Lord with all of my heart.

The "Grit and Grace" comment tells me that Monica will need many more years of therapy. Having spent some years in Little Rock and knowing the Clintons personally made me leave there and move back to Texarkana. I will always remember Little Rock as the most debauched city I have ever lived in because of the Clintons and their cronies. There never has been any "grace" about any of that family on either side.

When referring to this mess in conversation, I will from now on call it the "blue dress" scandal. I hate her name is attached to it at all. She was young and impressionable and was taken advantage of by what I think of as a sexual predator, president or not!

The Clintons have mega $$$$. They are untouchable in our corrupt political society. Give it a rest because they will soon join Billy Graham through natural means. Most Americans suffer recto-cranial inversion. They complain constantly about the same people they re-hire every election day. It taxes my credulity.

I have always felt that Miss Lewinsky was made into a scapegoat, depicted as an evil temptress ensnaring poor innocent Bill into her web of immorality. Her biggest mistake in my opinion was falling into the trap set up by Bill and then getting "caught". She had no way of knowing he and Hillary would skillfully shift blame for the whole affair onto her. The press went on to destroy her (with gleeful enthusiasm from the Clintons). Miss Lewinsky is the victim and always has been from the time Billy set his lustful eyes on her...she should never have had to defend herself the way she was forced to and sent into a lifetime of shame and embarrassment all because Bill couldn't keep his zipper closed...

People seem to forget that Bill Clinton was not impeached for "cheating on his wife" he was impeached for perjury and obstruction of
justice..There would be a "whole bunch" of presidential impeachments if "cheating" were the criteria. Sad but true.
Morality needs to be the example set by our "Leaders"

Some day Bill Clinton will stand in judgment for how he abused his power and took advantage of a starry eyed 22 year old intern. Even more egregious, as a teacher, I witnessed the repercussions of what Bill Clinton's disgusting lack of morals exposed to our young people. Many impressionable tweens and teens witnessed news reports and asked questions about what our then president had done. They believed his lie that oral sex is NOT sex and felt it was o.k. for them to experiment with the same type of immoral behavior. I am reminded of the verse, "If anyone causes one of these littleones-those who believe in me-to stumble (sin) it would be better for them to have a large milestone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." Matthew 18:6

Good points, Mike. I’m so glad you and your daughter are still serving God and this still great Country. IMO, Another article on the “how’s” and “why’s” of Monica, Linda T. and Ken Starr being cast somehow as villains by the press of that day would also be of real value to us all especially given the current FOX v CNN, et al, world politic.
