One of the more astounding stories of recent times is that of the North Korean defector who was so desperate to get out of that prison nation that he fled across the border, by jeep and on foot, even as Kim Jong Un’s troops were pursuing and shooting at him. The North Koreans turned back only after they realized they’d crossed onto South Korean territory, but not before shooting the defector, who had to lie bleeding until South Korean troops could reach him. He was flown to a hospital, where he was treated not only for bullet wounds but for other conditions indicative of extreme deprivation, including internal parasites so large that doctors had never seen anything like them.
The methods that Kim uses to keep an entire nation enslaved under such horrible conditions are fear, starvation and misinformation: making them think that everyplace else is worse, which is why everyone wants to invade North Korea. So South Korea is using an ingenious method to let the North know that the defector survived. Let’s hope the news travels far and wide. This is even more argument for the suggestion that the best way to take down Kim’s sick regime without firing a shot would be to flood North Korea with smuggled iPhones and set up free wi-fi overhead.
