Texas Musicians Museum Update

May 18, 2018

Today’s Must-See Video! Here’s something special to kick off the weekend and give you a break from politics. It includes the very first recording ever made by Waylon Jennings (it’s a singing commercial)…the first demo ever cut by a young Steve Miller…and a 1912 recording by an unheralded pioneering female artist (she was not only the first Texan to make a record, she was the first person ever to sue a record label – and she won!)

This fascinating video was put together by George Gimarc, a radio DJ/record collector and one of the founders of the Texas Musicians Museum. It shows how these treasures were literally pulled out of trash bins and preserved for future generations. I told you about the TMM: a group of grassroots music lovers and collectors built this terrific museum, research center and performance space in Irving, Texas, purely on hard work, volunteerism and love of music.

That is, until a couple of weeks ago, when the city government revoked their lease with no warning and gave them just 24 hours to tear down, pack up and move thousands of priceless artifacts that had been carefully curated over three years of painstaking work. The exhibits honored hundreds of iconic Texas artists, from Leadbelly to Bob Wills, Buddy Holly to Willie Nelson, Barbara Mandrell to Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top to Beyonce (she was born in Houston.) Volunteers worked all night to dismantle the dream. Now, it’s all in boxes, with storage and legal bills mounting as the music lovers who built the museum seek a new home.

These are good people who put their hearts into creating something truly special, only to see it crushed by the heavy hand of government. They have a GoFundMe page, and all it will take to save their efforts is for enough people to kick in just a few dollars each. Check out the video and see the kind of amazing musical history you’ll be helping them preserve, and share these links all around. And please toss ‘em a couple of bucks. Don't do it for me, do it for Roy Orbison and the Big Bopper (both Texans!) Thanks!
