What to make of Election 2018

November 7, 2018

Once again, President Trump has been proven correct: just two years into his first term, America has been doing so much winning that a lot of voters must really be tired of winning.

Well, by voting to give the House back to Democrats (current prediction is 219-193) to “send a message to Trump,” they have also sent the message, “Whoa!” to the galloping economy. As I pointed out, the last time Democrats took over and Nancy Pelosi assumed the Speaker’s gavel, in the space of just two years, the falling deficit more than doubled and GDP growth was cut in half – which Democrats then blamed on Bush and used to elect Obama, who gave us the Obama miracle of eight unprecedented years of growth below 3%. (Was two years ago really such ancient history that voters have already forgotten it?)  Let’s hope we don’t have a repeat of that, and if we do, that Republicans do a better job of combatting the media spin. I thought that living through Obama followed by Trump would be a stark enough contrast for most people, but apparently, some voters needed a second dose of castor oil.

Rep. Pelosi’s talk about concentrating on bipartisan issues such as job creation was a welcome sign, even though, of course, she couched it in terms of government spending on things like infrastructure, which you might recognize as an encore of the “shovel-ready jobs” the Dems recently spent about a trillion dollars on, only to find, as Obama admitted, that there was no such thing, largely because of all the regulations Democrats have put on shovels. We don’t really need big government make-work projects when the government gets out of the way and lets the private sector create real jobs.

Trump is by nature a deal-maker with friends or enemies, and he already tried reaching out to the Democrats to work on infrastructure improvements that are actually needed, but they were too busy holding a two-year temper tantrum and “resisting.” Maybe they really have seen the light and will work with him now to accomplish something. And maybe my garden gnomes will come to life and pull my weeds for me.

No matter what Pelosi says, the Dem ascendance will also include a Madame Tussaud-style waxwork gallery of ancient leftists, taking over important committees and vowing to impeach the President (thanks to the Senate, that would be a colossal waste of time and money) and hamstring the White House and the private sector with a tsunami of partisan investigations and subpoenas. Here’s a list of some of the likely new “heads” of those committees, in case the Halloween haunted houses weren’t scary enough for you:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/29/us/house-democrats-committee-leaders.html

Someone should point out to them that if they’re going to try to raise the age to buy a gun to 21, then why do they want to give a deadly weapon like a Congressional Committee gavel to so many childish people?

Incidentally, Stephen Colbert is already calling on the Democrats to open more investigations of Trump. Not that they needed any encouragement. If I were them, I’d think twice about taking advice from a comedian whose job is making fun of stupid things the government does. His motives are likely either ill-informed partisan spite or a desperate need for some fresh material.

It’s at times like these when it’s important to look for the positives, even though to Republicans, it might feel like sifting through a pile of horse manure, looking for a pony. So here’s some of the good news:

There was no “blue wave.” Historically speaking, this was better than the typical first midterm election for a new President. In Obama’s first midyear election, the Republicans gained 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats, and that was after two years of enbarrassing media fawning over Obama. After two years of the media relentlessly smearing Trump as the new Hitler, and with an election map stacked their way, Democrats gained only 24 seats (at this writing; some of these races may take days to settle, depending on how many Democratic ballot boxes can be found in car trunks) and the Republicans will increase their Senate majority by a few seats.

That means the Senate can continue confirming Trump judicial picks and other high-level appointments, without the need to kowtow to one or two liberal Republicans who habitually side with the Democrats. It also means that impeachment, which requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate, will remain a leftist fever dream no matter what the House does – unless, after spending even more millions of our tax dollars, Adam Schiff finally discovers that “Mike Pence” is really Boris Badenov in a Pence mask.

And while the DC swamp critters who tried to rig the 2016 election and cover up their skulduggery will likely now escape the harsh justice they deserve and Trump’s agenda will be effectively dead in the House (forget about any more tax cuts, a border wall, immigration reform, etc.), neither will any of the delusional “progressive” nonsense espoused by our new “youngest female Representative ever,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, such as “Medicare for All” or abolishing ICE, become law. And there will be no repeal of the tax cut or other items that the GOP House managed to pass since 2016.

House Democrats could also make good on their threat to reopen the evidence-free sexual charges against Justice Brett Kavanaugh, but they might want to think twice (or even once) before doing that, considering that Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the only Democratic Senator from a red state who voted to confirm Kavanaugh and also the only one who didn’t get thrown out by the voters.

So progress on Making America Great Again will be stifled, but it won’t be reversed. I hope that by 2020, voters will have seen that the House, after devolving into a “Mad House” of partisan bile, offers a perfect lesson in why you should never reward horrible, nasty, threatening, partisan behavior with more power, and they will correct their midterm mistake.

For that to happen, though, Republicans need to get a lot better and more aggressive at combatting the 24/7 diet of phony propaganda about how Republicans are evil, sexist, racist, homophobic monsters, which is sadly working all too well on suburban women and young voters (that will be much harder without the threat of the House forcing social media giants to stop censoring conservative users.)

And note to the limousine socialists of Hollywood and Silicon Valley: If Trump really were “literally Hitler,” he wouldn’t have reacted to this election with a self-congratulatory tweet. He would have simply dissolved the legislature.

It's sickening the way the liberal media attack President Trump and have no respect for the Presidency or other Republicans in office put there by the Voters or Appointed by the President.
One talk show host; his first name is Seth, ( I cant remember his last name ) - spends 15 to 17 minutes bashing Trump or any of his allies. 15 to 17 minutes of his opening monologue - 5 nights a week !! What a waste of time !!! The audience politely laughs or it's a laugh-track in the background, even though 98% of what Seth says is NOT funny. We need to remember to pray for Our President and the 1st lady. K.W. Hendren, Purcell, Oklahoma.

Hi Mike. We have some seepage of the Dictator Obama still around. There are acquaintances that have commented, "why, work, I get more from Government....than any job! They are proud to be freeloaders, and being lazy! As well, have friends who, are supposedly conservative, who "watch, mesmerized in front of TV looking at the mainstream media, swallowing, Hook, Line, and Sinker!" Some as well, have it etched in stone, the phrase, the Republicans don't care for the poor people! You can't work with(often too many Republicans) Democrats that lie, cheat, deceive, won't play on a level playing field! They are snakes! Promote Sodomy, Abortion etc! Can't trust the wicked, as I call them! Mob Boss Hillary one of the biggest! People who turn their backs on Christ! Serve Satan! God still works, He is in control! We pray for President Trump and VP Pence, etc. be blessed

Thanks for your fantastic observations on the 2018 mid term election, and all you are doing to inform people about what is going on in the USA. It is very sad about the things are happening in our American leadership, & on a more and more regular and routine basis.
And if we can't figure out some way to de-rail, or least slow down the currently out-of-control liberal freight train that is barreling down the tracks at full speed toward 2018 election day, this same sort of ridiculous garbage will just be the tip of the iceburg compared to what else we're going see in the near future. WE're headed straight for the full-blown liberal socialism/fascism, complete with drastically bigger government, higher taxes, lower wages, higher unemployment, government health-care (its worse health care), total gun control, homosexuality, and all other deviant conduct crammed down our throats, full amnesty for illegal immigrants, open borders, new laws to prevent people like Rush Limbaugh and "anyone else" from criticizing the government (i.e laws against free speech), etc. etc. etc. If the American people don't "WAKE UP" and start paying attention to what's going on around them, & start thinking about things beyond their own little worlds! I'm very said & afraid, for the future of America, the greatest republic ever established

    Dear Governor:

Russ Limbaugh has been lamenting about Fox News calling the Democratic House win relatively early in the evening. In order to the curtail the problems of the 2016 election polling, the media has developed a more accurate assessment. LIke Russ, if I understood him correctly, the new process can give rise to election meddling repressing or encouraging a group of voters to vote. We the People have lost a great deal of political "surprise" because of our "need to know" prematurely. It is much like an expectant mother having to know the sex of her newborn. Politicians and the left-wing media speaking the truth? That would be a totally unexpected process and outcome, a truly remarkable situation that would be worth our view time and effort.

There is one surprising political figure currently on the scene. We all know who his is!

Grateful it wasn't worse & we gained Senate seats. I know God is in control & He works in mysterious ways. There is a plan & we have trouble hanging on sometimes believing & having patience with Him. I'm just going to pray for our nation, President Trump, our enemies & his & then sit back & watch God do His thing. It may be one wild ride but, I'm letting God do the driving.

Governor Huckabee, I have a LOT of concerns in regard to this election. 1. How can the pro-lifers ever protect unborn babies with so many liberals and RINOs in Congress? 2. Do you see our support for Israel waning now that liberals have taken over the House? 3. I noticed two Muslim women were elected to the House. This brings up two issues. 3a. D these ladies realize that their attempts to bring Sharia law to the United States would set their own standard of living back at least a thousand years? No driving, less education, polygamy, honour killings, etc... 3b. One of these young ladies was caught dancing with a Palestinian flag at her victory party. A Palestinian flag at an event honouring an AMERICAN Congressional novitiate? What's wrong with this picture? If she's American, why is she dancing with a Palestinian flag? Her allegiance should be to the United States of America, not to a mythical Palestinian homeland. If she cannot meet this requirement, she should not be allowed to accept her Congressional seat. Your thoughts, Governor?

Gov. Huckabee, I thoroughly enjoy your newsletter each night! Thank you! A friend of mine said she heard someone ask why a GOFUNDME account isn't set up for President Trump to build the wall. I think that would be a WONDERFUL idea!! Thank you for reading this! You and your daughter keep up the good work! I appreciate you and your values!

Governor: Your comments on the article about the election results were so accurate. The Democrats taking back the house is more than
disheartening. What is wrong with the American voter. Is the memory of eight years of Obama and Democrat control, so short and so ignorant?!!!!!!!!!!! It will be interesting if there is some information on the voter turnout especially among Republicans, conservatives, evangelicals, patriots, etc. The Republicans made too many mistakes. Right before the 2016 election Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said
to the American voters "give us (Republicans) the House, Senate, and WH and we will get things done. Two years later, President Trump has gotten things done while most of the Republicans sat back, more concerned about their image and their careers and seemed for the most part to forget us "deplorables" that voted to give them the control they needed and what did they do with it- not much.

I am more than concerned it is going to be a long two years of the Democrats more aggressively pursuing their big agenda!!! Will Americans have to be awakened again to see what happens anytime Democrats are in control !!!!!
Will pray that somehow this divided nation can come together and evil and undermining agenda's are not allowed to prosper. Again, the results are nothing less than disheartening. Republicans better wake up and realize that there is no such thing as a fair fight against the left and the media and see to it that they are not trampled over while the gloating Democrats run over and past them before the all important 2020 election !!!!!!

WHY? Why did the Republicans almost lose in Fla. and Ga.? What is going on ? Who is putting out the millions to all these candidates? That so many would back Gillum who was just a mayor and then he could be a Gov of one of the largest states? HOW? That so many women went for Democrats and not support this President to bring back JOBS again. Rebuild our military that was taken down under Pres Obama. Try to stop all the illegal immigrants. See this Pres trying to drain the SWAMP. Now we get the real SWAMP with Pelosi, Schumer, Watters all need to go . Lucky us. If they start investigations good luck we out here want the Govt to work for us not tear down each other. Had enough with this Russian probe going on forever. WHY? Use all kinds of words Racist, fascist, Hitler, hates women on and on daily a new mantra . Sad for this country when our President is attacked in so many nasty ways. Who have we become and sorry it is not this President who created this but the Democrats? Hear now per Sununu on Fox Democrats had the money and he said the Republicans need to learn how to develop the candidates and make this money. No doubt Soros, Steyer, Bezo and Bloomberg were not involved in handing over the big bucks. Oh and Beto married to a billionaire family. Sometimes the money does not work like with Hillary. Need to find people now to build up . That this Siena in AZ a communist and now acting like she is a moderate who is kidding who and she almost won? WHY?

It was recently revealed that an election official in Texas allowed manny illegals to vote. This could explain why Senator Ted Cruz looked like he was going under as in drowning.Somehow Ted Cruz rebounded and managed to win re-election which to me is a miracle. But democrats have been well known to favor open borders for this very reason allowing illegals to vote in USA elections. So to me in realizing that illegals HAVE BEEN CAUGHT VOTING IN TEXAS makes me intensely suspicious about the entire election considering that democrats have actually won back power in the House even after their super vicious attacks on Judge Kavanaugh.I DON'T TRUST the election result because democrats depend on illegal activity to regain political power.Democrats were the ones behaving uncivilized and violent NOT republicans who thanks to President Trump are sitting on a economically booming economy of historic proportions. For Republicans to LOSE the House does NOT make SENSE.It does NOT compute.A great economy usually helps the party in power to increase their numbers NOT LOSE power! SO something very fundamentally is very wrong with this very strange election.Knowing today's Democrat party something illegal has been happening at the voting booths across the USA.

Mr. Huckabee, you were so correct about this being more scary than haunted halloween places. In the first place, they don't scare me as I know they are not real, and the only haunted things are the evil spirits that, as Christians, we can overcome. This is just too scary, and I am so sorry it has come to this. Although, I know that God is still on the throne and He is still in control. Knowing that, I can go on and not be too overcome by this mess in Washington. I know He has a plan, and we just need to be patient and watch and His plan will come to pass. We don't always know what's best, but He always does.

I also like your statements, "Maybe they really have seen the light and will work with him now to accomplish something. And maybe my garden gnomes will come to life and pull my weeds for me." Yep, start watching for your gnomes to pull weeds. I think it is more likely than the first statement. I enjoy reading your commentaries. I feel they are right on with what is going on. I like your daughter, Sandra, doing the press conferences. She has some fire and stick-ability that the press just can't cross. I wish some of them would just go away, but she handles them well. Thanks for reading my comment.

My heart is broken over the results of the House. I voted, prayed and I know that God is in control. I just don’t understand how people can vote for such dishonest, sneaky and evil politicians. How could they want to go back to what we had with the democrats? All we can do is pray and let our voices be heard.

I believe the Republicans lost the house because they failed the American people. They said give us the House, the Senate, and the Presidency, and we'll fix health care, etc. They couldn't quit bickering among themselves long enough to do much of anything. They improved in the Senate only because President Trump worked harder than anyone ever has to secure it. However, there just might be a method to this madness. No one foresaw what would happen when Harry Reid employed the nuclear option. Because he did, we have two great new Supreme Court Justices. Maybe God intends to use this to bring about something even better that we can't foresee right now.

It disgusts me, just as I am sure it does you, that the Democrats gained control of the House. How could some of the American people be so stupid?!? I happen to catch one of the CA Reps tell their best friend NBC Today Show that they will investigate Trump. That was his first comment. I hope they do and the Senate lead the investigation into leaks of classified information (by Democrats). So all the freshman Reps who ran on health care and other real issues, what will happen to them? Will they be forced to give up their issues and follow California Reps?

Mike, your article says the latest estimate for the House is 219 (D) and 193 (R)? The math doesn't add up. There are 435 members of the House, so 435/2 = 217.5, which rounds up to 218. So, 219 does give the (D)s a majority, but that means the split is 219/216. (You probably had a typo somewhere? Or is it that not all the results are in yet?) Anyway, that's an extremely narrow margin. With all the nonsense that's coming from the woman with the "big gavel" I'm sure that control will go back to Republican in 2020. And, impeachment will go nowhere - just like the "Mueller probe."

  • George Cooper

    11/07/2018 03:38 PM

    Mike,
Impeachment is only a power of the House of Representatives. The House committee approves articles of impeachment and sends them to the floor of the House for vote of approval (this is impeachment). If the articles are approved, they move on to the Senate. The Senate then votes to either approve the articles and put the president on trial, or they disapprove the articles, and the president remains in office. Impeachment is the sole power of the House, whereas, removal from office is a power of the Senate. Needless to say, the president will remain in office (good), and the congress will be known as the Do Nothing Congress (bad)........
