Michael Avenatti might not have liked it when I began routinely identifying him as “sleazy lawyer Michael Avenatti,” but it now appears that I may owe an apology…to sleazy lawyers.  I don’t want them to sue me for defamation for associating them with Michael Avenatti.

Even with the herculean effort required to grant him a presumption of innocence, it’s getting harder with each passing day to keep a straight face when he claims he’s a victim of politicized prosecutors out to get him for attacking President Trump.  If so, there must be a lot of Trump-voting prosecutors in unlikely places.  First, Avanatti was indicted in New York for allegedly trying to extort $25 million from Nike.  Then he was indicted in California on wire and bank fraud charges for allegedly misappropriating a client’s legal settlement for himself.

And now, also in California federal court, the Justice Department has filed a 36-count grand jury indictment against him for fraud, perjury, failure to pay taxes, embezzlement and other financial crimes.  Prosecutors say he was running a Bernie Madoff-style house of cards, lying to clients about not receiving about $12 million worth of legal settlements when he’d actually taken them himself and was using them to pay other clients and to fund his lavish lifestyle and investments, including a racing team, a coffee house chain and a private jet.

Commentary continues below advertisement

One of the accusations is particularly vile: that Avenatti embezzled a $4 million settlement from a paralyzed client, didn’t tell him he had the money, and gave the destitute man only a little cash here and there to cover some overdue bills. You’d have to hold a limbo contest for worms in a coal mine to get any lower than that.

Avenatti declared all the charges “bogus nonsense” meant to sideline him and tweeted that he will plead “NOT GUILTY.”  He’ll need the all-caps, since these latest charges alone carry a combined maximum penalty of 335 years in prison.  As Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett noted, if the feds can prove even a fraction of them, then Avenatti will be trading his Armani suits for an orange jumpsuit.

But while the media are concentrating on the lurid charges, let’s not let them off the hook.  The other part of this story that deserves notice is that for over a year, liberal news channels gave this man a national platform.  His willingness to savage President Trump on camera was all it took for them to present him to Americans as not merely a reputable, credible commentator but a serious potential presidential candidate!  An analysis by the Media Research Center found that he made 254 TV appearances (including 121 on CNN and 108 on MSNBC), free airtime valued by the Washington Free Beacon as being worth $175 million.

Is it now safe to add the glorification of Michael Avenatti to the growing list of major stories that the “professional” mainstream news media got spectacularly wrong?  If you listened to all their combined journalistic fire power, you believed that Trump couldn’t possibly win the Presidency; when he did, it was because he colluded with the Russians to rig the election; and the cure for that might be to elect that crusader for justice, Michael Avenatti, to the White House.

Over that same time period, I predicted confidently that Trump would win, explained that “Russian collusion” was a delusion concocted to excuse voters rejecting Hillary Clinton, and told you Avenatti was a sleazy lawyer.

From what I've seen over the last three years, we have entirely too many sleazy lawyers and they are ALL democrats. Start with Mueller and his bunch of hoods. Perkins Coie, man what a disaster that is. Comey, Rosenstein, Lynch, Holder e-w-w-w! how many others in the DC area are as sleazy as this motley crew? Likely a ton. How many in broadcast? How many in big Pharma, big AG,? Lobbyists, very likely far too many. the law profession has taken a huge hit in the last 8 years. Bill, hilary, barack, Michael Robinson who is NOT michelle! Avenatti?

All Conservatives must stop talking about people like Avenatti because they are irrelevant and deserving of attention, even negative ones. Doing so will ensure the Left will enshrine him (and others like him) to the altar of their (Dems) misguided-delusional ideology. Also, even if worthy of lengthy jail terms, all this publicity will assure him book deals and even movie offers. All Conservative media must stop the free advertising for the aforementioned reason and also because their supporters from the Left will never change their minds about them (included in these people are Ocasio-Cortez, Pelosi, Schumer, and other radicals) no matter what's uncovered for their lies and traitorous behaviors.

It is good to see that he is going to get his day in court. My real concern is for the people he stole from.
That paraplegic man was really robbed. Is he going to get any money from the liquidation of Creepy
Lawyer's business? There are several people he just plain ripped off. Will they get financial satisfaction?
Or will they have to retain another lawyer to tackle this mess? He was their LAWYER! Good Grief! Something must be done to get them their money. What do you think, Mike?

After clearing my driveway of all the snow yesterday I got the the sunshine I need with sleazy creepy porn lawyer Avenatti might get his day in court I hope he gets convected but really 300 hundred years lets be fair 299 years should be enough punishment for this real beauty of a fellow. A bit more sunshine beamed down on me today thru our thick cloud cover our President would like to send the very accomodating Speaker of House some new neighbors 1000's of them they can put up some nice tents along her wall it would be nice if she could put in some slats so they can look in on her no need to put any trash cans out Nanci they will pick up after themselves. No need to put any porta potties out they will use the ground the trees fire hydrants it will be like having your own survival series right out your front, side and back door should be fun maybe you will be able to capture some breeding episodes all in the wild. Let us know how it turns out the nation will look forward to your report Nancie. Maybe you can have a contest for the best survivor ask the President for some prize money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

335 years would only be a good start! I'd recommend hanging though it would be an insult to the tree to be used. A more despicable representation as an officer of the court, I've never seen.

So a crooked Democrat is actually going to court how about that and before you get all upset and claim the alt-right is fabricating a political hoax just look at what states have indicted him, California and New York (the two major alt- left states in the country. The problem will be where he is tried because if tried in California it will be in the 9th circuit court and they are all leftist judges so even if they find him guilty there will be some absurd plea bargain and he will end up with a slap on the wrist.

Governor Huckabee, you are one of the funniest men! “You would have to hold a limbo contest for worms in a coal mine! Hilarious! I love you and your daughter, Sarah. Not only are you both brilliant wordsmith’s, You both have a very intuitive, discerning, serious side when necessary and comedic in such a delightful way! You certainly can tickle my funny bone. I watch your daughter as she “handles” the media. Amazing how she can respond so calmly and articulately to so many calloused and rude journalists! Wow! Absolutely astounding! The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, that’s for sure! God bless you and protect you both.??????????
