A HEALTHY DOSE OF REALITY
I’ve been writing since the beginning of the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus pandemic about how, despite the constant blare of media talking heads screaming “TRUMP WRONG! TRUMP BAD! TRUMP LIES! TRUMP’S FAULT!” etc. etc. ad nauseam, and leftists claiming they would have handled it better, this has actually proven the left has been wrong about virtually everything they’ve said for at least 50 years (if you want to go back 100 years, you can throw in socialism.)
You name a cherished “progressive” policy and this pandemic lays waste to it. Socialized medicine takes better care of people? Would you rather be in the US or Italy right now? Secure borders that vet people who are entering a nation are racist. Globalization is good and will civilize China into a trustworthy trading partner. Trump is a backward xenophobe for calling out China’s unfair and dangerous practices and wanting to bring our manufacturing (particularly of medicines) back to the US. The greatest extinction threat comes from the climate. People should be forced to live in dense urban areas and ride packed into mass transit. It’s “humane” to let people live in filth on city sidewalks and defecate in public areas because imposing hygiene standards is bigoted somehow. And of course, it’s better to use reusable cloth shopping bags that are hard to sterilize (and require tons of pollution-creating gas, electricity and detergents to wash and dry) than clean, cheap, recyclable plastic bags.
Notice how when things turned serious and lives were at stake, all those cherished liberal policies got reversed immediately, along with the notions that being called by something other than your own made-up pronoun or excluding males from competing in girls’ sports were actual problems.
And yet, we’re still hearing from the left that this crisis proves they have always been right about everything, and we can’t let it “go to waste” when it can be used to force even more of their suicidal socialist ideas on us.
Well, no: starting from President Trump’s first act, banning travel to and from China way back in January, the left has been wrong (their response was to call Trump a racist xenophobe, while Nancy Pelosi was urging people to gather in San Francisco’s Chinatown as recently as late February.) They continue to this day, so blinded by Trump hatred and their desire to see him fail that they would echo blatantly false Chinese propaganda or discourage patients from trying a promising treatment before they would admit he might be right about anything.
Fortunately, some people are starting to notice. I’m amazed that the Atlantic allowed this to appear on their site…
Some of the anti-Trump mouthpieces for China are starting to get called out…
That even includes the director of the World Health Organization, who places entirely too much trust in whatever China tells him…
People are also beginning to question the wisdom of shutting down the entire economy based on computer models built on questionable data that have so far proven wildly exaggerated (to be sure, I hope they remain wildly exaggerated, and that shouldn’t be a reason to be any less cautious.) But the question is, why are they wildly exaggerated? Is it because we’re all doing such a bang-up job of avoiding the virus, or is it because they were garbage to begin with?
Are the current death figures accurate, given that the CDC has instructed hospitals to list COVID-19 as the primary cause of death even if it’s just “assumed to have caused or contributed to death”? For instance, if someone who's 98 years old and has been in failing health for years dies and after testing positive, then COVID-19 is listed as the cause of death.
And if the death toll is smaller than predicted, why aren’t the media presenting that as good news? Is it because bad news is more politically useful?
In other words, is it really necessary to crash the economy and impose a socialist police state if the data justifying it is obviously faulty and we all know what to do to avoid getting this, and 99.9% of us are doing it? Do Americans really need a permanent nanny government with a switch in her hand to force us to behave responsibly?
Some law enforcement officers are already bristling against being expected to trample people’s rights, even in the name of public health…
I sense that many Americans are already becoming wary of pronouncements like this, from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who sees the current health crisis as a great opportunity to impose a new “progressive” era (because those policies have been working great for California so far – they prepared the state for the pandemic by forcing many Californians to socially distance themselves by fleeing to other states)…
Americans are also getting a taste of how fans of big government control are already salivating over the opportunity to push people around and trample their rights, from telling people what’s “non-essential” in stores so they’re not allowed to buy it, to California cops arresting a man for surfing all alone (was he spreading the virus to the dolphins? FYI: he wouldn’t have had contact with any humans at all if it weren’t for the cops waiting on the beach to arrest him.) And then there’s the Pennsylvania teenager facing a $200 fine after state police cited her for taking a drive by herself just to get out of the house. Again, how was she spreading the virus inside her closed car? She obviously wasn’t, but the authorities are spreading the virus of authoritarianism.
Just as the empty toilet paper shelves are giving Americans a taste of what shopping is like under socialism, stories like these are giving them a taste of how much personal freedom you enjoy under it. Let’s hope that the silver lining of this terrible time is that it will end with not only far fewer deaths than feared (largely due to individuals taking responsibility, not government coercion) and with the eradication of the coronavirus, but also the eradication of a lot of fantasies about how great a socialist America would be. All that will take is a healthy dose of reality.
A SIDE-ORDER OF SARCASTIC REALITY
For those who enjoy their doses of reality with a side order of sarcastic humor, here’s Kurt Schichter’s latest, on “why you should never give power to someone who enjoys it.”
And today’s Must-Read: Tim Blair of Australia’s Daily Telegraph delivers a line-by-line response to the Chinese government’s indignant complaint that criticism of them is false and unfair. This gives new meaning to the phrase, “a verbal beatdown”…
As long as we’re questioning the stock buys of various Congressional insiders who might have known the coronavirus disruption was coming, maybe we should add one more name to the list. After all, we know how much she loves investigations to make sure powerful political figures aren’t doing anything that violates her strict code of ethics.
A big salute to today’s Huck’s Hero, retiree Allan Marshall of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He’d saved up $900 to buy a knife sharpener. But with his mom in a nursing home and his wife working at Blue Cross Blue Shield, he knew how vital the work of nurses is right now. So he decided to use the money to help them instead.

DAILY BIBLE VERSE
"And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness."
Colossians 3:14 (KJV)
Something we could all use: a little hopeful news about the economy. It might have been shoved off a cliff, but there’s a chance there’s a trampoline waiting at the bottom.
Somebody needs to do a study on how long someone can self-quarantine and social distance before going stark raving stir-crazy.
