Sean Hannity presented an update Wednesday on the homeless problem in major cities with far-left leadership, featuring Los Angeles this time, and I returned to the show to talk further about it along with fellow FOX News contributor Emily Compagno. The response to my newsletter commentary from a few days ago about the leftist “plague” has been huge, and the topic is just too important to drop.

Wednesday’s segment started with a man-on-the-street interview montage with FOX News reporter Lawrence Jones asking LA residents what they thought about the problem. Most of them blamed the mayor –- who “makes a lot of promises” –- and city government for not handling the problem, which obviously stems mostly from mental health and drug issues. One woman who might be assumed from her T-shirt to be an advocate for the homeless said there were about 30,000 (!) nearby in a small area of “Skid Row.”

Jones included shocking video evidence of the extent of the problem in downtown LA --- block after block of sidewalks made completely impassable by filthy, rat-infested, ramshackle tents. Not that anyone would want to set foot on these sidewalks. Never mind the risk of assault or a needle stick; just the smell would knock you down, and trust me, you do not want to be down there.

California has a 13-1/2 percent state income tax. Along with New York --- NYC also has a serious homeless problem --- they have the highest tax rates in the country. This should tell us that leftists are wrong to think money and lots of it is the answer to social problems. As I told Sean, the truth is that we have an industry of poverty in this country. Most people would probably be surprised to learn that the typical “poverty” program spends about $18,000 or more per person in a year –- it works out to over $73,000 for a family of four. Campagno said that Seattle spends an incredible $100,000 per year for each homeless person in the city, adding up to a billion dollars a year. In Los Angeles alone, the homeless population is up 16 percent from last year, 75 percent from six years ago. Spending just keeps climbing; they recently voted to spend $4.5 billion to build houses for homeless people.

Obviously, if a city like Seattle is spending $100,000 a year for each homeless person, the money is not being used to benefit that person. As is typical of any government bureaucracy, the money doesn’t get to the people who need help. It’s going to people who are making a great living off the poverty of others. This has been going on since President Lyndon Johnson’s War On Poverty; they used to call them “poverty pimps.” That’s how “progressivism” works --- it’s all about making those on the left feel compassionate when they aren’t actually solving the underlying problems. They’re just enablers. They’re not meeting the basic needs of the people who are hurting the most, to help lift them out of their situations.

The focus on short-term solutions means that billions of dollars are just down the proverbial rathole. (I thought “rathole” was a really appropriate word in this context.) The debt these cities are accruing is phenomenal, and their tax base shrinks as middle class residents, priced out, understandably flee to more competently run places.

Hey, Nancy Pelosi is great at raising money, so why doesn’t she do something? As I told Sean, she’s raising it, all right, but for the most important thing: electing Democrats, who will vote to spend even more tax money on those short-term solutions that don’t solve anything.

Some blocks in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle look worse than places in Afghanistan. We don’t need to look any farther than this to see what happens when far-left people control the government. It’s a disaster, a disgrace, a human tragedy.

When you combine this with the observable results of toothless immigration laws and an open border, it’s impossible to deny that leftism is actually reinforcing poverty, drug addiction and contagious disease. While leftists scream about a manufactured border crisis, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is now saying we have a “full blown emergency” at the southern border. While leftists scream about impeachment and debate which bathrooms and pronouns to use, the REAL problems just get worse.

Commentary continues below advertisement

The numbers are alarming. For May, we had the biggest monthly number of apprehensions at our border in 13 years. It’s the third consecutive month that border detentions topped 100,000 in one month. There is no more room in our detention facilities. As CBP’s chief operating officer John Sanders said on FOX News, “We re in a full blown emergency, and I cannot say this any stronger, the system is broken...this ongoing crisis has placed a a tremendous strain on our resources and operational effectiveness. To address these unprecedented numbers of family units and unaccompanied children, up to 60 percent of our agents are being pulled away from law enforcement operations.”

Even a former CBP commissioner under Obama, Gil Kerlikowske, said on FOX News that it’s a mistake not to admit that the numbers reflect both a humanitarian crisis and a logistical crisis at the border. It’s something that has to be dealt with, he said.

I would add that it’s also a danger to national security. Only a confirmed, Trump-hating leftist would believe this mess is simply “manufactured.” Congress needs to pass legislation to change the rules at the border, especially the asylum law, and they’ve got to appropriate needed funds, but the left is never going to do anything about this. When they do acknowledge a problem, they, unbelievably, blame Trump for it, and still do nothing. Joe Biden, noted plagiarist, woman-squeezer and Presidential candidate, is telling voters that “this is a crisis created by Trump.” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whom I understand is a congresswoman, is going around saying we need to simply abolish ICE. So why should it be a surprise that leftists can’t deal with the homeless problem, either?

As we’re now seeing on the streets of major cities AND at our border, problems eventually reach a tipping point. This is why Trump was elected President, to actually DO something that will work. Yet leftists continue blocking him, mostly through the liberal courts but also by dividing his attention with bogus investigations and threats of impeachment. It’s 100 percent politics, while people suffer and once-great cities decline. Leftism really is a plague, and it’s going to take some strong medicine to stop the destruction.

Speaking of plague, regarding it and the other contagious diseases that I wrote about in Part I of my commentary, Tammy Bruce, a frequent FOX News guest and president of Independent Women’s Voice, is speaking out about this health crisis and addressing it on the organization’s website, linked to below. As I said, typhus is moving through Los Angeles, even affecting the police department. In addition, there have been about 1,000 reported cases so far of red measles, which can be very serious, even deadly. The CDC has warned about tuberculosis. They’re not screening people at the border for communicable diseases, even though some come from ebola-ravaged nations. From South America, there’s the threat of Zika, the disease that causes microencephaly (small head syndrome) in newborns. Unless someone is coming across legally on a migrant visa, there is no requirement for proof of vaccination. You’ll find much more information about this at the IWV website.

This problem is going to take some tough action, and soon. Independent Women’s Voice has launched a petition at to tell the White House we must redouble the effort for border security and also require proof of vaccination for anyone coming in. Remember, this is about EVERY family, EVERY human being who could possibly be affected down the road. I hope you’ll go to their website and sign the petition.

I have a hard time reading this. I just heard that California will now give free Medicaid to 90,000 illegal immigrants to the tune of the cost of $98 Mil. Why cannot we not give that to our own citizens. Sacramento is filthy to, I spent a week their not long ago people slept under underpasses, without clothes on, they left poop and pee and did it right in front of others. I stayed in a hotel, and tried to come out of the room but it was blocked by someone sleeping outside the door. I could not wait to come home to my home in Arizona!

No more illegals coming across out border. Not only the drugs, MS13, human trafficking, but now diseases long eradicated. Enough.

While engineers continue their innovations in technology, and mathematicians have perfected the calculations to slingshot around the moon; choose the exact speed and trajectory to meet the Earth moving through space at 67,000 mph, and land at a precise spot in the ocean where a navy ship is waiting while the Earth rotates 1,000 mph, the sinful nature of man has not "evolved" into "the higher planes" of virtue.

Our democrat congress, our law enforcement and intelligence agencies are ruled by demon possessed men and women. Literally, devils speak their words through theirs and the msm's godless lips, prodding their odious deeds that in the end will cost them their salvation. When we read Paul's words, "for we are not ignorant of his [Satan's] devices," the entire secular world is, including every Bible illiterate Christian who thinks a Christian life equates to ascending in an elevator with soothing background music. Until we call sin by its right name, the Gospel commission will never finish.

I grew up in Windsor Ontario across the Detroit River where all my cousins lived having since moved but no too far away. I spoke to one of them today and I knew he was a democrat but couldn't believe how violently he hated Trump He thinks Trump is a womanizing scum bag who plays golf every day and took his entire family on taxpayer money to Europe using D-Day as an excuse. He stated emphatically that all the killings by guns were carried out by White supremacists and number by foreigners was minimal. And would not allow me to say anthing that conflicted with his narrative. If this is the success of the propaganda it is scary. How will we ever reach these people....They know nothing good ooof Trump and the bad things they hold onto with a vengeance are all fake news. I have a really hard time accepting that we only have one news agency News max with Bill O'reilly. I pray they can reach some people. I think we need to make this a major league station
I listen to Rush and Hannity when I can and the BBC which often tells me some good things about Trump and often points to incidents accurately which surprised me.

It breaks my heart what is going on in my home state. It was a wonderful place to grow up, but not any more. Isn't there anything the President can do about this travesty?

And yet they keep getting re-elected! Proving that the leftist doctrine that preaches about "helping people" is all smoke and mirrors. It's about proliferating an ideology and gaining power. It's the sheep that keep voting for these leftist who are to blame. Chicago, NYC, LA, San Fran, Detroit, Denver, name any big city and it's going to be controlled by leftists, while the violence, poverty, filth, and drugs spiral out of control. Leftism truly is a mental disorder.

This message should be spread far and wide.
It should be presented in front of Congress.
Our country is under attack from external and internal forces.
Thank you for your efforts to enlighten with the truth.

I wish everyone except Hollywood and politicians would leave Ca. Would they then blame themselves? Naw, it would still be Trumps fault. Let's face it, only God is able to fix this mess because His word is final and too bad if you don't like it. I know I am tired of it and hoping for the rapture just think what this world is going to look like once the Christians are gone. Then the leftist can have it all to themselves.

At one time the problem was so bad the city steam cleaned the parking structures. There is one Lutheran minister in Lompoc that is willing to take some in but has rules and employment is not readily available where the church and building is located

Until the rnc or someone starts taking ads out on tv to show people how bad these cities really are, things wl remain the same. You hardly ever SEE anything about the problem. Once in a while u might read about it in the mainstream media. Americans live on short sound and tv bites. Gotta put it in their face.

Living in California, I agree with your summary. It is a crisis and it is a major problem for all Americans. We need to get the message out nationally, with pictures and videos of these people.
Our crisis began here when the state thought it would be ok to close down facilitates and let people who they thought could live in society, give them their walking papers. Now we have a governor who wants to get a group together to study and make suggestions on how to solve the problem. If Congress continues to be a do nothing Congress, the Democratic will be no more. Just ask the people in these areas and they will tell you how to solve the problem.

Peace is ... living in harmony with our human design, and that is what we must return to, creating a global grassroots movement that will sweep the U.S. and beyond. I have an audio file which I'd love to have you listen to, which explains exactly how we can return to peace. Keep up the great work.

LA and SF are evidence of dems criminality. We didn't have this problem in 1990 We didn't have it in 2000. This is in my view criminal neglect. All too many of these people are homeless because they can get away with it. This proves without a doubt that dems should Never again, be place in political leadership roles. They demonstrate every where, every day, they are not only incompetent but criminally negligent in the duties of city responsibility. It appears only harsh measures can solve this problem...all over, from coast to coast we have nothing but visibly documented failure.

I heard over FOX today that George Wills called Republicans a cult. At least we are true Americans who left the Democratic Party because they want to bring down America. Immigration is way past a problem. They may think they are going to vote Democratic, but they are bringing in disease, violence plus draining America and our children and grandchildren. Family that lives in CA says there are cities you don’t go to and taxes are too high. God please bless America.

Majority of churches could care less. My denomination, the ACNA, very orthodox and evangelical doesn't speak out like the church is supposed to. The church for the last 40-50 years has been doing the same old stuff. Now the only thing one hears is the blessings of God, the latest trips to Alaska and the MidEast most of us seniors can't afford. Many churches are siding with the RINO's/Demo's and/Marxists due to the lies being spread about the faith. It is up to the believers now to repent and seeks God's hand in restoring the nation

Possibly they will only see the light when someone they love is injured by an illegal or one of their fatal diseases. Save American. If you have a brain and a spine, vote Republican.

One of my 2 senators (both democRATs), Catherine Cortez Masto, has told me twice illegal immigration isn't an emergency, much less a problem. I'm pretty sure she's a never-Trumper and another who doesn't give a rodent's posterior about the people she represents, unless they're democRATs as well. Haven't heard from "Wacky" Jacky Rosen yet, but since she's the democRAT who stood up and told senator Sinema to "watch your ass" when she stood and applauded for something Trump said about women in congress during the SOTU message, she's of like mind.

We’ve got to increase jobs in Latin America. American private equity investors owning a 51% of stock in companies operating there (working closely with the Feds), could inject capital and business acumen to get these companies into the global marketplace. That’s the short version.
