After thinking it over for a while, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi finally formulated a response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address beyond looking like she had a Skittle stuck in her molar. She tweeted:
“Trump's State of the Union performance last night was just that — a performance completely devoid of the serious policy ideas that lead to real bipartisan efforts.”
Funny, I could have sworn I heard Trump float a number of serious bipartisan policy ideas, from a DACA compromise bill to expanded family leave to a major new infrastructure drive. Maybe Nancy was sucking too loudly on her teeth and didn’t hear him.
But okay, let’s play on her field. What is the biggest “serious policy idea” that Nancy Pelosi was responsible for shepherding? I believe that would be Obamacare. Was it bipartisan? No, it was forced onto an unwilling public through a party line vote and Olympic gymnastics-level rule-bending. I assume from her disapproval of Republicans killing the Obamacare mandate that if she comes back into power, she’ll bring it back.
Looking ahead, her party expects voters to give Congress back to them and make her Speaker again. If so, what are some more serious policy ideas that they gave us before, and from all their public statements, are likely to regurgitate again?
Well, they hate the tax cut, and blue states are doing everything they can to negate it by raising taxes on businesses, so expect higher taxes, smaller paychecks, and punishing policies toward businesses that will kill our renewed job creation.
We know they think that “illegal alien” and “immigrant” are synonymous, so expect more serious policy ideas that will involve open borders, protecting criminal illegal aliens from deportation and rewarding people who broke the law with citizenship (so they can vote for Nancy and her friends.)
We know they hate Trump’s tough new leadership in foreign affairs, so expect more serious policy proposals that put America at a disadvantage in trade deals; that commit us to expensive, economy-crippling environmental treaties; and that weaken our position in the world and embolden our enemies, the way Obama’s pullout from Iraq allowed ISIS to stream in.
Finally, we know they hate Trump personally, so if they get the House majority, they’ll immediately plunge America into a constitutional crisis by trying to impeach him on no particular grounds.
So there’s the Democratic platform for November, and quite a slate of serious policy proposals it is: Prop up Obamacare with more tax money, raise taxes, punish employers, prioritize illegal immigrants over US citizens, weaken the US at home and abroad, and launch a partisan impeachment trial on no real grounds other than being sore losers. I think I left out insulting cops, blue collar workers and the flag, but those things are givens. That should make one heck of a campaign commercial.
In a related story, a new Monmouth University generic preference poll shows the Democrats’ much-vaunted “blue wave” lead collapsing from 15 to 2 points, and that was taken before the State of the Union Address. All things considered, I’m stunned they still had a 2-point lead. I had no idea there was such a huge masochist vote in America.
