Today's Commentary --- Leftists got control of Congress but still can't control themselves -- California shooting -- Dumb arguments -- OUTRAGED!!! -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Obama -- Jeff Sessions replaced, Democrats already screaming -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse
You’d think all the Democrats would be really happy right now. While they didn’t get the “blue wave” that they’d hoped would knock out Republicans like Ted Cruz in Texas and Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee, they did get control of the House, which has been their Holy Grail. (Well, I guess it would be more accurate to say the impeachment of Trump has been their Grail, but gaining the House was perhaps the most important step on their path to the Grail.) Leftists can now pull out all the stops, investigating everyone and everything even remotely connected with Trump, with the goal of putting every last one of their political enemies in jail, while pointing fingers at them and crying, “Fascists!”
If they want to see fascists, they should try looking in a mirror. This is the stuff fascists do.
Anyway, on Wednesday night they should have been popping champagne corks and singing “Happy Days Are Here Again,” but instead they were once again acting out in anger. They just can’t seem to help themselves. “Smash Racism DC,” a self-described “anti-fascist group” (anybody else would describe them as “a fascist group”), the same crowd that got their jollies screaming at Sen. Cruz and secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen in restaurants and sending death threats even to the restaurant that continued serving Cruz, were much too busy to relax and celebrate victory. In the name of fighting “fascism,” a never-ending task, they showed up at Tucker Carlson’s Washington DC home and chanted threatening messages and obscenities.

There was a horrific shooting last night in Thousand Oaks, California. Police say a tall man dressed in black with a hood partially obscuring his face entered the Borderline Bar & Grill, shot a bouncer, then began seemingly shooting people at random. Twelve people are dead, including a sheriff’s deputy who entered after hearing gunshots. Many of the bar patrons were local college students, and incredibly, some in the bar were survivors of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Police said the shooter was dead inside, but it isn’t clear yet how he died or what his motivation was. One witness said he knew what he was doing: he used smoke bombs, reloaded in seconds, and had “perfect form” as he shot.
This is a developing story, so keep an eye on the media for more details as they become known. Until then, please keep the victims and their families in your prayers.

One of the many dangers of not teaching young people civics and real American history (aside from the newly-elected House) is that they grow up not understanding even the simplest concepts about the Constitution and why our system of government is so brilliant and works so well. It’s filled with multiple layers of checks and balances to insure that one faction can never seize permanent, unchallengable power over the others. One way is with the divided branches of government. Another is the way that the power of population numbers represented by House districts is balanced with equal representation of each state in the Senate. That way, the House may reflect the passions of the majority, but its rash actions and passing fancies are tempered by the more deliberate and broad-based power of the Senate, representing the interests of all the states equally.
Seriously, that’s about all you need to know to have a basic grasp of the difference between the House and the Senate. So why in the world are so many “progressives” latching on to the obvious fact that some states have more residents than others but all get only two Senators and waving it around like a bloody flag as some sort of affront to democracy? No, it really doesn’t matter if California contains more of the “popular vote” than Alaska; that doesn’t mean they should get more Senators, nor that we should abolish the Senate and have pure mob rule. In railing about this “injustice” on Twitter, Amanda Marcotte, who passes as a political analyst at Salon.com, lamented darkly, “Our country is not a democracy.” No. No, it isn’t, and was never meant to be. Were you out sick that day in junior high?
It’s no wonder Hillary Clinton was their idol: they all have a basic misunderstanding of what the “popular vote” means (in both the Electoral College and Senate races, it means n-o-t-h-i-n-g, and deliberately so.)
Still, as dumb as this whole new argument is, I have to say, “Bless your heart” to Joy Behar of “The View.” This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone blame the fact that densely-populated blue states have the same number of Senators as less populous red states on “gerrymandering.” The populations of those blue states must be getting really dense.

I would never, in a million years, make a joke that might be construed as offensive, such as quoting the old, politically-incorrect cowboy movie cliché, “Paleface speak with forked tongue.” But I’ll bet you can’t look at these two Tweets and not think of it. Shame on you.
Remember, the important thing in “progressive” circles is to be constantly “OUTRAGED!!” It doesn’t matter what they’re outraged about. As you can see, it can even be the opposite of what they were outraged about yesterday. As long as they’re spitting nails about something, no matter how contradictory, hypocritical or incoherent. To a leftist, a day without a blown gasket is like a day without sunshine. And don’t even get them started on sunshine. It was secretly created by Big Phama’s white male scientists to give us all skin cancer!! Why, they’re “OUTRAGED!!!”

While the media talking heads were relishing the Democratic takeover of the House and trying unsuccessfully to hide their bad case of the sads that the “blue wave” was more of a light drizzle, perhaps the least covered story was the biggest loser of the 2018 elections: former President Barack Obama.
While President Trump drew record-breaking crowds to his rallies and saved several close races, Obama broke Presidential precedent to badmouth his successor in a series of poorly-attended campaign events for Democrats. They drew press coverage mostly for his attempts to take credit for the booming economy that, I’m sure due entirely to dumb luck and bad timing, didn’t start booming until businesses and investors were assured his policies would be history. Also, for the many, many times he used the words “I,” “me” and “my” in his speeches.
Maybe his campaign appearances for other Democrats would have been more effective if he’d remembered to mention their names occasionally.
Jeff Sessions replaced, Democrats already screaming
By Mike Huckabee
Well, that didn’t take long.
The day after the last ballot was cast on Election Day (though some remain to be counted, and perhaps re-counted, until Democrats ultimately and mysteriously win a few tight races), Jeff Sessions wrote to President Trump:
“At your request, I am submitting my resignation...”
FOX News reporter John Roberts broke the story: This morning, Chief of Staff John Kelly, speaking on the President’s behalf, asked by phone for Sessions’ resignation, and the response came quickly. It seems likely that Sessions was prepared and had written this some time back; the fact that the letter is undated is certainly consistent with that.
Trump reportedly has already sworn in a replacement, now-acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, who presumably lacks the conflicts of interest that prevented Sessions --- and should have prevented Rosenstein --- from overseeing the Trump/Russia probe. Whitaker had previously served Sessions’ chief of staff. However, there are already challenges: he’s spoken about the metastasizing scope of the probe and reportedly has commented in the past on limiting the special counsel by cutting that budget. He’s also argued for more declassification and in an op-ed countered former FBI Director James Comey’s assertion that “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring a case against Hillary. Sounds like a great choice to me, but Democrats are screaming “Obstruction!!!” at the very act of Whitaker coming in.
Ironically, gleeful Democrats such as Sen. Chuck Schumer are already throwing around terms like “constitutional crisis” when the President is trying to put people in charge who have FEWER conflicts of interest than the ones who have been there for the past couple of years. Shameless Democrats mercilessly criticized Sessions during his confirmation process, and now they're screaming because he was asked to resign. Of course, their fondest wish is that a judge or investigator with personal or political animosity towards Trump will choose to ascribe nefarious motives to Trump and interpret any action on his part as obstruction, when in truth he’s exercising his constitutional authority as President. They’re even saying –- deja vu alert –- that the new acting Attorney General should immediately RECUSE HIMSELF from overseeing the special counsel. In other words, no one should oversee the special counsel. In their world, the special counsel is God.
Much more on this as it develops. At this writing, Rod Rosenstein is reportedly on his way to the White House.
