Stop the presses! Women in Saudi Arabia have just been granted an enormous, unprecedented personal freedom. They will finally be allowed to get behind the wheel of a car and drive.
This comes after heated debate in which one cleric argued that the act of driving a car would damage a woman’s ovaries. But never mind that now –- the decision seems to have been primarily economic, as lower oil prices are making it necessary for Saudi women to have outside jobs, and paying drivers really eats into a paycheck. It might have something to do with international reputation, too.
It won’t happen immediately, as the kingdom currently has no way for women to obtain licenses or take driving lessons. And if they can’t get driving lessons, every standup comedian in the world will be telling jokes about Saudi women drivers.
