BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

With so many political leaders rushing to virtue-signal and genuflect to the most radical mobs in ever-more-embarrassing ways (the Minnesota city council voting to defund the police because wanting burglars kept out of your house is an example of "privilege," or Nancy Pelosi and her wealthy white colleagues all dressing in African garb like a Beverly Hills community theater Kwanzaa pageant), Americans might be forgiven for thinking that the leadership class of one of the major parties has gone stark raving nuts. But I’d like to assure you that, at least in some instances, that’s not true. They aren’t all insane. Some of them are just insanely cynical hypocrites who know that what they’re saying in public is nuts, but they’re just afraid to admit it publicly.

To quote Charlie Rich, “But when they get behind closed doors…” (Warning: Bad language at the link.)

Audio has leaked of a private conference call between Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and all the city’s Alderman in which she and Ald. Raymond Lopez went at each other in a profane exchange over Lightfoot’s dangerously weak response to rioting and looting. Lopez was concerned that the violence and lawlessness would spread from urban into residential areas.

Lopez said, “I’ve got gang bangers with AK-47s walking around right now, just waiting to settle some scores. What are we going to do and what do we tell our residents other than ‘good faith people stand up’? It’s not going to be enough.”

Lightfoot tried to ignore Lopez’s question, then attacked him personally for asking it, but it’s obvious from the results in the streets that he was right, and I assume she knew it. May 31 was later revealed to be the deadliest day in Chicago in 60 years, with 18 people killed in 24 hours (by comparison, in Chicago’s notorious St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929, only seven men were murdered.) The 18 black lives that were lost, including dads, college students and a high school girl, mattered a great deal to their loved ones, and they should matter to civic leaders whose #1 priority is to ensure public safety.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will note that the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre did take place under a Republican Mayor. He was, in fact, the last Republican Mayor of Chicago. He left office in 1931, and the city has been run entirely by Democrats ever since. But Chicago's violence, corruption and racism are, of course, all Trump’s fault.

BACK IN THE NEWS

Speaking of Chicago, did you really think that Jussie Smollett wouldn’t try to use the current war on cops to wiggle out of his six felony charges for lying to authorities and faking a hate crime?

ELECTION SEASON

Some more primary elections were held around the nation Tuesday, in Georgia, West Virginia, Nevada and North and South Dakota. You can find some of the top results at this link.

But the biggest news is an election that still isn’t settled: in the Georgia Democratic Senate primary, Jon Ossoff is still just below the 50% needed to avoid a runoff, as a long count (and potential recount) drag on at this writing. Ossoff lost a 2017 special election, despite spending a huge amount of money, much of it flooding in from outside the state.

Tuesday’s vote is being examined as a possible harbinger of the November election. It could mean that with massive turnout on both sides and voting by mail, the results could be too close to call, leading to a long period of uncertainty that could make angry partisan divisions even worse (personally, I think Trump will win pretty decisively, but you never know.) Not mentioned here is that it may be bad for Democrats even if Ossoff does win the primary by a whisker. Have they ever considered the possibility that no matter how much money they spend, if he can't even crack 50% in his own primary, maybe not that many Georgians want to vote for him?

While some Democrats are calling for defunding police departments, most of the top names are doing some NFL-level broken field running to try to dodge that question. And no wonder: figures from Open Secrets reveal that Congressional Democrats are among the biggest recipients of campaign donations from police unions:

The top two recipients in the House are Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (D-N.J.,) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland; and in the Senate, Sens. Patrick Leahy and Amy Klobuchar. Sen. Klobuchar was also the county attorney in Minneapolis when the cops arrested in George Floyd’s murder were not fired or prosecuted for previous brutality complaints. I imagine she’s already been struck off of Joe Biden’s Veep list, but this should add a couple of extra strikes with a Magic Marker.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

BLACK LIVES MATTER

An arrest has been made in the murder of retired St. Louis police captain David Dorn, who was shot in cold blood while attempting to provide security for a pawn shop during last week’s rioting. The suspect was allegedly caught on surveillance video brandishing a gun and robbing the shop. He’s facing multiple charges, including first degree murder. Good.

CHANGE AT THE NFL I CAN GET BEHIND

Last week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell joined in the rush to take a knee by declaring that "we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier” when they enraged many fans by kneeling during the National Anthem. He said he would be "reaching out" to players who have "raised their voices," and the NFL will "encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest...Without black players, there would be no National Football League and the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff."

Predictably, that was not good enough for the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is turning his funeral eulogies for George Floyd into political attacks on President Trump, and in Houston, into a demand that the NFL rehire quarterback Colin Kaepernick. This conveniently overlooks the fact that Kaepernick has had multiple opportunities to play and blown them with his own behavior. Last year, he was given an unprecedented private tryout for all 32 NFL teams, on a Saturday when the teams are normally busy preparing for games. But after the scouts showed up, Kaepernick moved it to another venue on 30 minutes’ notice. He also spoke to the XFL and AAF, but demanded a guaranteed paycheck 80 times larger than their normal salaries.

I’d be interested to hear if Goodell is equally apologetic about the league’s oppression of players who wanted to express their deep feelings about other issues, like the ban on the Cowboys wearing stickers honoring five Dallas Police officers who were murdered by a sniper during a protest of the treatment of blacks by police in Louisiana and (again) Minneapolis. Five Dallas cops died and nine others were injured as they heroically tried to protect the lives of the people who came to denounce them. But that doesn’t fit the current media narrative, so I’ll note that the NFL has also banned expressions of support for a number of other causes, including religion, mental health, and fighting domestic violence and breast cancer. That’s because they all violate the league’s ban on using uniforms to convey any unapproved messages on game day:

This stems from the original concept that’s gotten lost in all the fury and finger-pointing: when players are in the stadium, they’re in their workplace, representing their employers. Contrary to claims, Kaepernick never had his First Amendment rights taken away. That only prevents the government from censoring you. He was free to speak out on any subject on his own time, on radio, TV or a soapbox in the park. But he wasn’t allowed to stage divisive political protests that alienated customers while he was at work.

If the NFL is forced to take back Kaepernick, then does that rule apply everywhere now? Say you work at a car dealership, and you have some controversial opinions on social issues that you’re so passionate about, you feel you must force customers to listen to them before they can test drive a car, or make your colleagues sit through them every time they come in to work. So now, you no longer have to worry about being sent to HR or fired with cause, you can just keep on doing it? How long do you think that dealership will remain in business?

Allowing these divisive protests in a place where fans traditionally came to escape from politics, put aside differences and root for their teams cratered NFL TV ratings. In the past few seasons, ratings have crept up again, largely because of the divisive politics finally receding. Goodell now wants to bring it all back with a vengeance.

This brings up another question, asked countless times by former NFL fans: How has Roger Goodell kept his job? He normally makes about $40 million a year; although during the pandemic shutdown, he agreed to reduce his salary to zero, and many of us think he’s finally being paid what he’s worth. His admitted wrong decisions (which he’s now been on both sides of) have cost the league billions, driven away fans and seriously harmed its reputation. He even admits he was in charge during years of “oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff." If you did that to your employer’s business, would you still be employed?

Several prominent business leaders, such as the CEO of the Second City comedy troupe, have found themselves so wracked with white guilt that they’ve resigned their own jobs so they can be replaced by a black applicant. In that spirit, Goodell should step down to be replaced by a black former NFL player.

I nominate Burgess Owens.

BERNIE SANDERS: A VOICE OF REASON?

Just how bowlful-of-Froot-Loops crazy are the demands to defund and dismantle police departments? They’re so beyond the fringe that even Bernie Sanders thinks they’re too far out there.

When asked about it by the New Yorker, Sen. Sanders replied, “Do I think we should not have police departments in America? No, I don’t. There’s no city in the world that does not have police departments.” He said that instead of defunding police, we need “well-trained, well-educated, and well-paid professionals in police departments.” So mark it down in the history books: this is the day when Bernie Sanders and Mike Huckabee agree on something!

Whoever would have imagined that the radical extremists who’ve commandeered the steering wheel at the Democratic Party and most major media outlets would drive so far into the ditch that they’d make Bernie Sanders sound like a sober voice of reason? You know what this means: Bernie had better brace for being declared a Nazi and a white supremacist and “disappeared” as a non-person.

Let Seattle reap what their Democrat governor and mayor have sown. In all of these blue states and cities, where lawlessness has been allowed, let them sleep in the bed they have made and no federal assistance to rebuild, because their own decisions helped create the mess they have.

    MIke,
I would just like to ask another forbidden question. Everything seems to be focused on denigrating whites, and promoting blacks, regardless of what, where, etc. I would just like to ask where is fairness in hiring in the NFL with respect to ration of blacks and whites. I bet there is not one NFL team that would pass the 'equal hiring practices' ratio of blacks to whites. I won't be watching NFL any more, anyway, but why is the NFL exempt from all the caterwalling about fairness in hiring?

    Thank you for the verse.

And, as a die-hard Packer fan (in memory of my Dad as a dedicated fan no matter how bad their season went) I may re think my viewership this next fall. But, you gave a ray of sunshine to the dark tunnel that Goodell shoved the fans down, I think YES to hiring Burgess Owens to replace Goodell.

    Dear Governor Huckabee,
There seems to be one thing that everyone is forgetting in the situation with George Floyd's death.
Isn't one of the foundations of not only our (USA)law but western law back at least to the Romans - the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE?
Every single comment I have read, all the commentary I have heard on this situation presumed the police officer GUILTY. I am certainly not saying that I believe he is innocent from what I have seen and read, BUT, that isn't the issue. The issue is whether everyone in the USA, including people like our President, some of whom represent the law and order of our country, have stated he is guilty, and guilty of murder.
If I were on a jury, I would not hesitate to vote GUILTY to a defendant about whom it has been shown beyond a reasonable doubt, was guilty. In some particular cases I would even vote to recommend the Death Penalty, BUT, that is not the issue either.
We may have seen something with our eyes, but with today's technology, our eyes can be tricked. We may hear from witnesses or listen to a recording, but those things can be altered. I am not saying they were, I am just saying it is possible - and you know a time will come when the entire world will be deceived.
Listening to the calls of guilt, let alone the protests and the looting and rioting, makes me think of the old Western movies where the town ran out, grabbed a rope, said, "No, we don't need a trial, string him up!" And then they were stopped by Roy Rogers and saved making a mistake. Even if whoever they were going to string up, WAS guilty, they are due their day in court, and are PRESUMED INNOCENT until they ARE proven guilty in that court.
Think where unbridled responses like this COULD lead...may I mention the name Nick Sandmann?
I would offer the opinion that those protesting now do not really have the right, based on our law, to protest now, their protesting is premature, as is, they have judged and condemned the officer and based their actions upon that personal verdict-a very dangerous precedent. Why didn't wait until the trail was over? If the officer were found guilty, there would be no reason to protest (the original reason for the protest were specific - the wrongful death of George Floyd by the police officer. We have watched as it has broaden and broadened to include statues of people long dead, football coaches and the destruction of cities.
And I would hate to have to interview potential jurors for this case, because as far as I can tell, there isn't a person under age 99, who hasn't ALREADY determined the officer guilty - which, of course, would make them disqualified for the jury. That is a bad precedent too.
I don't know, do you this rolling, enlarging snowball might not have started down the slope if those with a significant "voice" had reminded the country of this, under our law, every single person is PRESUMED INNOCENT and allowed their day in court ?

Thank you for raising the NFL Kneeling issue! Where does the League and teams get the money to pay those huge salaries? TV advertisements of course, plus stadium ticket fees. To me it would be OK if they added a 30 period of silence where those wishing to kneel could do so- BUT when the Anthem is played I personally turn off and do not watch that game in any instance where someone kneels during the playing of the Anthem. As a retired US Marine I have lost too many friends defending the freedoms we all enjoy. I hope others will also "tune out" such games and the League will lose funds and the players will suffer the results of their smallness!

WHY does no one look beneath the poll stats and KNOW that all who are not left of center on any topic can/will answer polls because their cars and homes will be targeted and damaged or destroyed no matter where they live? It is SO obvious--and easier to investigate if any cared. Even in Republican areas, the risk of letting anyone KNOW is real. I just ordered a "My Faith Votes" T shirt and am wondering where I can wear it in the mountains of N GA----and we are very conservative , but there are some outspoken liberals everywhere Thanks for listening. Georgia's mess up makes me angry. There's no excuse for it.

Considering that we are the company we keep, would you have much hope for George Floyd being a good man when you see who the friends of the family are? There are some very good black men that I would be more than honored to be my friends, and speak at my funeral, but never never would I have any of those who spoke at George Floyd's funeral.
The ones I admire aren't loud mouths, and they are men with class.

America is in a mess, and it's going to get worse before Jesus comes. The preachers who study the Bible tell us this, so we need to pray for courage to stand fast.

I don't normally say anything but I can't keep it in any longer. I have seen people questioning why isn't everyone behind Black Lives Matter, like they were for example after the Las Vegas shooting, but now it is All Lives Matter. Well this is my opinion All Lives Matter and I will back up my thoughts on this, the Las Vegas Shooting there were not just black people there, there were white people, I would venture to say there were people of Spanish descent and others. How do the people going around saying Black Lives Matter, think that makes a couple who is a black mother and white father (or vice a versa) feel? And what if that couple has children that are biracial feel? That is in my opinion why ALL LIVES MATTER. Red, Black, Yellow, White we are all precious in HIS sight.

What is happening to our country? It is not the country I grew up in and I am afraid. I do know that God is in control so this all must be part of His plan but it brings me sorrow that it is happening. I've never seen such hate and almost all is directed at our President and those who support him. There are those who are trying to destroy our history--tearing down monuments, trying to rename military bases, attacking anyone who might differ with these actions without trying to understand that what happened in our past cannot be changed and failing to understand what happened then must be taken in context with the times and thoughts of the people in their time. It is the acceptance--no promotion--of sexual abnormalities which are against God's teaching--promotion of homosexual behavior, homosexual marriages, gender identity confusion, promotion of abortion up to and including the birth of a baby. I feel our country will feel the wrath of God. What is sad is that the people who are promoting all of this are deaf and blind to what they are doing and those of the Democratic leaders are promoting all of this. I feel that we are living in the end times. God protect us.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the reason we elected a person of color to the Presidency was to show that we are not a racist country. We elected this man in no small part because of collective white guilt. We had been convinced that we needed to atone for our oppression. It was imperative that we do the PC thing. How did this work out for us?

Perhaps the fact that we elected a person with no qualifications for the job, who had a dislike for white people and the constitution had something to do with it.. With no business experience, no military experience, no humility, and no political accomplishments as either a state or federal senator he was probably not a wise choice for this great experiment. This experiment probably erased any progress we have made in the last 50 yrs. Thanks Barrack Hussein Obama for blowing the opportunity of a lifetime to actually advance race relations in our country. Wrong person or the outcome could have been so much different. A real shame

What IF all the white(caucasians) stopped supporting the NFL? Didn’t attend any more games, stopped watching them on TV. That might make a difference in those overpaid protesters getting a fat check! My husband, who is a sports fan, hasn’t watched an NFL game in 3 years. I am NOT responsible for what happened in the past to anyone but myself and neither are these protesters(rioters). The one thing they need to stop doing. Stop letting people label black people. Not a one of those young people came from Africa! They are American and need to stand up and say so. If they want to be “African” American and pledge their allegiance to Africa then that is where they need to live. Not All black people came from Africa and i would think that would be insulting to those who don’t hale from Africa. Just my opinion for today!
One last thought: has anyone given any thought to the fact our “community organizer in chief” is behind this?!

I do not have any actual facts to back up the following statement, however, I get the sense that the enhanced organizational skills being displayed by the looters, appears to have a foreign feel to it, like China or Russia. The United States of America is beyond doubt the greatest social concept and experiment in recorded human history, and diametrically opposite of Chinese and Russian ideas, which have both proven to be failures.

How much longer is the United States going to allow the lawlessness that is going on today continue? At this time I hope a strategy is being form to stop these takeovers and destructive behavior of the nations landmarks. I have thought give these thugs enough rope and they will hang themselves the end of the rope better be near. People are starting to wonder where are leaders of the GOP When do they crawl out from under the desks. No one is standing up to stop these invasions I don't care to watch much more of this. The leader of Washington needs to be removed along with about 20 others that are allowing these takeovers to take place they are not protecting the taxpayer. That is the oath they took.

Gov. I now am so disgusted when the one channel I could go and escape has been taken over and at first I thought oh I have the wrong channel .No Oprah took it over for Where Do We Go . WHY? No doubt per they know they have a big super viewing group? I had enough of what to do now per a idiot policeman and now we are to take down the whole rest and give the money to all . Not giving enough for many years now? What did she pay or whoever to put this on HGTV . No way to escape I guess. Wish there was another home channel Fox come u with one. Now also tonight there was an actress on this reality and she is off but now she is saying a few made some racist statements not really if you hear on ET what was said or go to Vanderpump rules. Everyone talks but it was not that negative not things people say for years. Then there several black actresses claiming they have not gotten certain parts per racism. Am I too blunt to ask where do whites go when they do not get parts.? Many it takes years to get somewhere or else out the door. Not just overnight success. What is this Gov. Statues coming down I am of the south and yes family in the Confederacy . This is our HX. What is next Washington Monument,Jefferson, Lincoln just remove them and leave as a place to put in bathrooms. Next close up the White House and let the presidents live in a condo and get their own help . This is all privilege White? Gone With The Wind one of my most favorite since a kid not think anything of that slaves. Majority never had slaves Gov. Too poor. Many ask now there were 3 funerals in different states and a final in Tex and many had family die could not do a funeral. Truly Amazing. True the Inmates now have taken over the Asylum . Maybe President should have sent out the Army Police. That a group of 14% now can say this is what you have to do ? I had to be subjected for years to that horrible terrible rap on and on that tore down police, women made them into Hos and disgusting language. Now we will do what we find is not what we like. Even the car races to remove the Confederate and they are doing this. I was born W Va raised Del we would come home and now and then in the mtn see a Confederate flag to me as a kid it only meant the South never anti blacks. None of my family ever ha d a flag. So now what. I n my powder room is a pic and in this is a old cabin like I might have seen in the 50 and on that cabin is a small confederate flag so I guess better take it down. Give to me by a Northerner from New Hampshire? Very sad Gov on what next. We here that in Chicago 20 killed this past week black on black does this not matter who they were too? Why killed. Who is using this and setting this up and why? Did Pres Trump go too far for the SWAMP the Billionaires made their money off China and of course never off Russia . Tried everything they can and nothing has worked so now try to keep the blacks on board in spite of their cities that died like Detroit, Baltimore and parts of Chicago where they kill and a good part was destroyed. The Guard was on the main drag with the great stores. See how fat Newsom brought in the guard when the riots hit sunset in LA? Tucker said where are the Republicans sitting there like this was a walk in the park. Majority of all I know are disgusted and in no way want to lose their police. NOw just means more will have to get Permit To Carry like a lot have for a few years now anyway. I saw Gov Trump had raised this economy he had brought all kinds of jobs we could not fill them all in Ga signs all over? Before the virus and many blacks now working everywhere did not see this under Obama. So if they want a Biden good luck and for all of us an end. Take care. Like to know how and why HGTV did this.

If black lives matter . Why are so many blacks killing each other ? Have Pelosi and the rest of the kneeling Congress explain that fact . By the way I am old and I don't need help getting off my knees like the old witch in CA. From what I have noticed about the Far Left is they care less about anyone but themselves . No life matters to them . The fake News Media could care less about lives are our freedom . What a deplorable state we are in with the republicans standing quietly by allowing all this crap to happen . Totally disgusted !!!!

It’s just plain old abortion gone wrong Governor Mike. Their bodies were delivered but wasn’t allowed. If this woman came out at night in witch, I would run like a deer. As for as Chicago burning, I would go up there in place nearby and hold a concert and sell popcorn and cokes and watch the darn thing burn down. The people there are getting what they deserve because they voted the witch into office and probably do it again. Why? You can say it with if you want:
    YOU CANNOT CURE STUPIDITY.
Problem with the good old boy republicans is they are to nice. Even Jesus got angry enough use a whip on people.
