MORNING EDITION

April 2, 2020

By Mike Huckabee

FRUSTRATING - I wrote yesterday about the frustration of hearing scientists in charge of the COVID-19 response call incessantly for DATA, no matter how long it takes to get it. Well, Americans sitting at home with no work for the foreseeable future want data, too –- but a lot sooner.

For example, we want to know the real infection rates, recovery rates and “negative outcome” rates. (Everybody knows what doctors mean when they employ the euphemism “negative outcome.”) We need these to assess how necessary it is for us to grind the U.S. economy to a halt for months and possibly create global economic collapse, with all the disaster and hopelessness that would bring.

For many, the seriousness of this –- the full impact –- is just now really starting to hit. We hear it in President Trump’s voice, now that he’s had to extend the stay-at-home guidelines. The kids want to go outside and visit friends. People worry if they’ll have jobs to go back to. The rent was due on the 1st. Speaking of that, one way we know it’s bad is because April Fool’s Day came and went with precious few April Fool’s jokes.

Anyway, right now it’s impossible to know what the reality is, because we have no idea how many have been infected. That means “experts” are flying blind, too. An undetermined number of those who pick up the virus are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms that mimic some little respiratory thing and they don’t even get tested. That’s why estimates and predictions have been all over the map. Fancy charts and graphs mean NOTHING. You know how it is with computer models (including those for predicting “climate change”): garbage in, garbage out. Any infection rate we plug into these models is guesswork. Garbage.

VIRUS IMPACT GROWS

The number of Americans filing unemployment claims exploded to 6.6 million last week, doubling the previous week’s record filing.

It means that in a very short time, 10 million Americans have been thrown out of work by this virus (thanks to China’s government covering it up and allowing it to spread around the world. It’s a fact, deal with it.)

This news has many people, Tucker Carlson for instance, asking why we still have a “demented policy” of importing foreign workers to take American jobs.

Nancy Pelosi recently said that in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the left had “won every argument.” This was astounding to me since the opposite is so plainly true: this crisis has shown, in stark relief, that these people have been dangerously wrong about everything they’ve said for at least 50 years, but particularly in the last decade or so.

Just think back on the long list of leftist tropes that we were told are conventional wisdom, yet now lay in tatters and ashes. Trusting China, open borders, globalization, pushing everyone into high-density housing and mass transit, the idea that our biggest threat is climate change (when former President Obama tried to push that idea this week, it seemed as outdated as telling Nixon jokes to Millennials.) Across Europe, we’re seeing nations that called Trump a racist xenophobe for wanting secure borders suddenly discover the necessity of secure borders.

And check out the results of this new Harvard/Harris poll that found 5 out of 6 Americans want to end all immigration from Mexico during the coronavirus crisis.

Remember when suggesting that securing the borders to keep our foreign diseases made you a racist, xenophobic Nazi? Well, in this poll, those who want to do it include 77% of black Americans, 75% of Hispanic Americans and 74% of Hillary Clinton voters.

People keep saying that nothing will be the same after this virus scare passes. It appears likely that leftist ideology will never be the same because it will have been leveled by hard reality.

PRESIDENT TRUMP'S REFORM OF GOVERNMENT IS VISIBLE

If you listen to the media (and why would you anymore?), you would think that President Trump is just running around flailing aimlessly, with no plans or preparations for such an emergency. But in fact, as this in-depth article from the Daily Signal explains, we’re seeing the results of a massive reform effort that’s been going on since Trump was elected.

Many of the things that are helping, like being able to consult a doctor over the Internet, are results of reforms Trump has made. All would be helpful in dealing with the coronavirus, and if they’re not fully in place yet, it’s because the government has been blocking and slow-walking them, often for no discernible reason.

The problem isn’t that what Trump has done is wrong. The authors note that we’re much better off than we would have been under the previous Administration. The real problem is that the pandemic arrived before Trump was able to get government out of the way of his reforms so they’d be ready when we needed them.

We’re lucky that Trump was making these reforms, and when this is over, we should demand that they be made more quickly. In the meantime, if Trump seems to be in constant motion, it’s not because he’s lost to know what to do. It’s because he has to constantly keep swinging a machete at red tape and removing government roadblocks to common-sense reforms.

INSPECTOR GENERAL DIGS INTO FBI FISA REQUESTS

Just as a reminder that the coronavirus isn’t the only thing in the news: the Justice Department Inspector General examined 29 of about 700 FBI requests for warrants under the FISA court and found problems with documentation, errors or “inadequately supported facts” in every last one of them.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz wrote that the “deficiency in the FBI’s efforts to support the factual statements in FISA applications…undermines the FBI’s ability to achieve its ‘scrupulously accurate’ standard for FISA applications.” No fooling!

When you’re dealing with a secret court that allows surveillance of US citizens, a Constitutionally-questionable premise to begin with, it could be tolerated only under the strictest standards of evidence. Yet the IG report finds that in 100% (!) of the cases examined, the standards weren’t upheld.

That doesn’t “undermine” the FBI’s “scrupulously accurate” standard for FISA applications, it blows it up like a cherry bomb.

I’ll have more on this story later. It represents such an outrageous breach of the public trust that we cannot allow it to be swept under the rug.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE IN NYC

As you know, I am a supporter of Samaritan’s Purse, the Rev. Franklin Graham’s worldwide organization that is among the first on the scene wherever disaster strikes, bringing both physical and spiritual comfort to the victims. I know that nearly every penny I give goes directly to helping people, from Third World nations to Tennessee tornado victims, and now to places overwhelmed by the coronavirus. Last weekend, Rev. Graham appeared on “Huckabee” to give us an update on the group’s heroic medical efforts in Italy…

And just to show that your donations help at home, too, here’s a report on the field hospital they just set up in New York City, staffed by 70 doctors, nurses and other medical professionals volunteering their time and effort.

I know that this is a tough time for everyone, but if you are in a position to help others with a donation of any size, there’s no place where it will go further or do more good than Samaritan’s Purse. You can learn more, donate or sign up to volunteer right here: http://www.samaritanspurse.org

Governor Huckabee: Many people in this country are dying from the coronavirus. The country cannot get necessities to keep people alive, to protect healthcare workers, to do the testing necessary to save spread of the virus. So many people are now unemployed and cannot pay their bills. The US economy has very nearly come to a halt. While not a financial crisis at this time, the coronavirus has placed in jeopardy large and small industries, small businesses, and our banks. AND, OUTRAGEOUSLY, DONOHUE, THE CEO OF THE US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, JUST SAID HE ASKED PRESIDENT TRUMP NOT TO USE THE DEFENSE PRODUCTION ACT TO MOBILIZE US PRIVATE PRODUCTION CAPACITY TO PRODUCE WHAT THE COUNTRY REQUIRES TO QUICKLY DEFEAT CORONA; AND WHEN THE PRESIDENT INVOKED THE ACT, HE, DONOHUE, ASKED TRUMP NOT TO LEAN ON BUSINESSES TO PRODUCE. WHAT IN THE NAME OF GOOD GOD IS THIS??:? BUSINESSES SHOULD BE WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK, TWO OR THREE SHIFTS TO QUICKLY PRODUCE EVERYTHING THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM GETTING CORONA, KEEP PEOPLE FROM DYING FROM CORONA, AND QUICKLY, IN 30 DAYS, END THIS CHINA PANDEMIC, MADE WORSE BY US BUSINESSES NOT WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK TO PRODUCE LIFE AND COUNTRY SAVING NECESSITIES AND DONOHUE, US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, TELLING TRUMP NOT TO LEAN ON US BUSINESSES IN ORDER TO SAVE PEOPLE AND COUNTRY.

I’m very happy that Franklin Graham is doing such good helpful work. I’m also disgusted but not surprised that a”gay” (queer) New York representative is opposed to the State/City allowing Graham to do this because of his oppressive “Christianity”.

Hi, Mike: This link will take you to the Fla State Health Dept website on the virus. I find it very interesting. You can see the "U shaped curve" taking place in Florida and it is not on the downward slant yet. Finally our Gov has put some teeth into things by saying "Stay at Home" I am in my fifth week of isolation. Getting tired of it, but at 85 I gotta do it. Take care; stay safe.

    Governor Mike,

You know I do not disagree with you often, but today must take exception to one of your statements - that April first came and went with no jokes.

I guess you were not counting nanny Pelosi's babbling, ol' sleepy uncle Joe's deranged mumbling, or "the morning Joke on NBC with PMS.
