Today's Commentary --- In case anybody's wondering, I'm not just preaching to the choir -- Huck PAC's Political impact -- October surprise -- Too much government -- Police association rescinds endorsement -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Huck's Heroine -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse

My readers know I see their comments, though it’s impossible to answer them all personally. It’s great when people agree with me and appreciate what I have to say, or even get a laugh, but I don’t see my writings as some kind of “safe space” in which I’m just preaching to the choir and not being challenged in any way by people of a different political or philosophical persuasion.

That’s why I’ve chosen to respond to reader John E’s comment on my just-for-fun essay, “20 Questions for Rod Rosenstein.” He sent several additional questions for Rosenstein to answer, none having the least bit to do with what Rosenstein is being called in to talk about, and none of them for fun (too bad), but all having to do with Trump, some of them concerning his activities and investments from years gone by. Maybe he was just trying to be snarky, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he genuinely desires answers. Oh, and he finished with a special question just for me, I guess because he likes me so much.

Since Rosenstein isn’t answering questions right now and perhaps will be taking his sweet time about it, I thought I’d go ahead and surprise John E by answering all of his questions myself, as matter-of-factly as possible while trying to stay brief. Keep in mind that some of the questions could have entire books written about them; in fact, they probably have. I’m not a lawyer, either, as Rosenstein is, but here goes...

Huck PAC's Political Impact

By Mike Huckabee

My political action committee Huck PAC is a grassroots organization that relies solely on the financial support of individuals and our endorsements reflect their views.

In 2018, Huck PAC has donated $194,800 directly to candidates (9 US Senate races, 27 US House races, 5 Governors races and 23 Arkansas races).

October surprise

By Mike Huckabee

I’m old enough to remember the good old days, when an “October Surprise” meant that someone dug up a political candidate’s old DUI arrest or a photo of him with a cutie on his knee on a boat named “Monkey Business.”  Ah, the age of innocence!

Now, we’re less than two weeks from an election, and people are threatening and assaulting those who disagree with their politics, smashing and burning cars because of their bumper stickers, stealing and burning yard signs, calling each other "Hitler" on the Internet, mailing pipe bombs, and blaming the President for someone mailing pipe bombs before anyone even knows who mailed the pipe bombs or why.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that these days, the biggest October Surprise of all would be turning on the news and hearing something that’s not insane.

Too much government

By Mike Huckabee

Pollsters who’ve been pushing the “blue wave” narrative for months are now quietly backing away from it.  There are many reasons, but here’s one that nobody’s mentioned: maybe Americans have realized, or remembered, how much they don’t like being bossed around by the government.

President Trump took office on a vow to slash federal regulations, and he’s done so at an even faster clip than he promised.  The result is that people who felt hamstrung from starting or growing a business under the regulation-crazy Obama Administration are now flourishing, creating businesses and jobs and boosting incomes and tax revenues.  And it appears that Americans are noticing how much better life is when government does the minimum required and otherwise gets out of the way.

A new Gallup poll found that only 39% of Americans now think there are too many government regulations, down from a whopping 48% during the Obama years.  Another 33% think the number is about right, and 25% think we need more government regulations.

In short, if the election boils down to the question of whether Americans like jobs, freedom and prosperity or overweening federal micromanagement of every aspect of our lives, then the Democrats can only count on getting about 25% of the vote.

Police association rescinds endorsement

By Mike Huckabee

The Arizona State Troopers Association rescinded its endorsement of Democratic Senate candidate Kyrsten Sinema. The union’s executive board voted to endorse Sinema without consulting the members, and an email poll found that they did not agree with that decision and wanted the union to remain neutral, so it will.

Let’s hope this is the start of a long-overdue trend of union leaders no longer endorsing leftwing candidates that their members do not support.  It’s high time they were reminded that the job of a union leader is to represent the workers, not a particular political party.

Oh, and since each day brings us a new eye-popping statement from the dark, cobwebby closest of Krysten Sinema’s liberal past, here’s one for Thursday: an unearthed clip from a radio interview in which she declares herself to be “the most liberal legislator in the entire state of Arizona.” To her credit, at least this time, she didn’t refer to it as the “crazy state of Arizona.”

Huck's Heroine

By Mike Huckabee

Here's an amazing story of a Huck’s Heroine, Koeberle Bull of Lumberton.  As any mom would, she got upset when some crazy stranger on Facebook left threatening racist comments on a photo of her children.  But she didn’t just block him.  She had a “gut feeling” that something was wrong with that guy, and she went to work to find out more.  It wasn’t easy – he lived over 650 miles away in Kentucky and he’d blocked her from his Facebook account – but by contacting people with access to his page, she learned who he was and that he’d posted other disturbing messages and photos of himself holding a gun.

So Bull contacted local police, who to their great credit took her call seriously and went straight to his home to check it out.  They found in his possession “a firearm, over 200 rounds of ammunition, a Kevlar vest, a 100-round high capacity magazine and a detailed plan of attack” on a local school.

Some are calling Bull’s gut feeling “Divine intervention.”  I wouldn’t argue against it.  But let’s also give plenty of credit to her, for her dogged “mom’s intervention.”  She saw something, and she said something.  She didn’t stop digging even when it was inconvenient, and she likely saved countless lives.  Imagine what might have happened if the police and school officials in Parkland, Florida, had been as determined to protect children as she was.

I met you briefly at the Garden Tomb last May. I got to wondering if some would think my remark about you being a "national treasure" sounded a bit patronizing, but, frankly, I know no better source of concise daily news analysis from a conservative Christian viewpoint! Thank you! Regarding "October surprises" from the left, the only surprise is the exact nature of them. We can assume there will be well-planned an orquestrated wacky moves designed to influence the vote in favor of the left. My prayer is the an intelligent majority will see through them and be even more energized to go to the polls and vote in a sane manner! The future of the country depends on it!
