I’m very sad to have to report that former Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Joe Liberman died Wednesday afternoon at 82, following complications from a fall. In a statement, his family said, "Senator Lieberman's love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest." I want to extend our deepest condolences and prayers to his wife Hadassah and his family.

Joe Lieberman served in the Senate from 1989 to 2013, originally as a Democrat, then as an Independent in 2006 after losing the Democratic Primary. As Ronald Reagan famously said, he didn’t leave the party, it left him. The Party’s leftward lurch left no place for a patriotic, religious, centrist Democrat who worked across the aisle with his Republican colleagues and was always civil and respectful even to those he disagreed with. Fortunately, voters appreciated that and returned him to the Senate as an Independent.

Until very recently, he continued to speak out in defense of Israel and against the shocking rise of anti-Semitism on the left and Democrats who seem willing to sell out Israel to pander to their radical pro-Palestinian voting bloc.

While it’s understandable that he is being praised by people across the political spectrum, I can’t help wishing that some of today’s prominent Democrats who are lauding Joe Lieberman would spend less time talking about him and more time emulating him.

There are many articles and obituaries online today, but I recommend this very personal one by his friend, John Podhoretz.
