Saturday night, there was a four-alarm fire in a residential apartment on the 50th floor of Trump Tower in New York City. Tragically, one person was burned to death and six firefighters were injured putting it out. Fires high up in skyscrapers are a nightmare scenario, so while we pray for the victims, let’s also thank God that it didn't become even worse.

Unfortunately, ‘60s rocker David Crosby seemed to think that the deadly emergency was a proper event to politicize, since he tweeted at the news, “Oh boy…Burn, baby, burn.” He quickly deleted it. Sadly, some other people who don’t have the excuse of decades of drug use affecting their brains had similar reactions.

This came on the same weekend that Jimmy Kimmel and Sean Hannity got into a Twitter feud that started when Hannity criticized Kimmel for ridiculing First Lady Melania Trump’s accent, then turned very ugly when Kimmel started making gay sex jokes about Hannity and Trump. Kimmel apparently forgot that he’d made the fatal mistake of being a comedian who’d aligned himself with people who have no sense of humor. His newfound fans, as the left always does, turned on him in an instant and blasted him for making derogatory homophobic jokes. Kimmel quickly apologized, issuing a statement in which he admitted that such vitriol and hatefulness “from both sides” (but I notice it's mostly from your side, Jimmy) is harmful to our country, and he’ll give more thought to his words in the future. It would’ve been nice if he’d recognized that simple fact before attacking the First Lady and not after he was attacked by LGBTQ activists, but at this point, any step toward civility is welcome.

I hate to keep repeating myself, but I find that I have to keep using the phrase “basic human decency” over and over, to discuss all the stories that are based on the lack of it. Maybe I need to write a primer on the subject for celebrities, politicians and people on social media, to remind them of things they should have learned in kindergarten, like the Golden Rule. That doesn’t mean never speaking your mind when you disagree with someone, just keeping the disagreement on policy, not the personal. For instance, Lesson One might be: Some things are bigger than politics. So don’t wish for or laugh about death, injury, violence or disease striking someone you disagree with politically. That doesn't make you "brave," it just makes you a boor.

I disagree with or make jokes about many things that Hillary Clinton says (she just gives me SO MUCH material!) But I don’t wish harm on her, and if her house caught on fire, I’d offer prayers, not run to fetch marshmallows. When I disagree with someone, I want to talk to them and try to persuade them, not threaten to punch them in the mouth (I’m looking at you, Robert DeNiro.) I disagreed with virtually everything Barack Obama did, but I always referred to him as “President Obama” and showed respect for the office he held. Those are just basic acts of decency and civility. When did they become obsolete?

I totally agree, basic civility, dignity and just plain good manners seem to be a thing of the past and unfortunately, I do not see it getting any better. Our public schools have become "baby sitters" and do not seem to teach anything moral or decent or show respect or consideration for others. And what's even more depressing, schools do Not seem to be teaching much History either. It is a travesty and I blame our Corrupt Government and the PC police for this travesty. Will we ever get back to being truthful, moral, polite, intelligent and considerate of others?

Thank You, for being a person that puts your Christian beliefs up front and using God as your guiding light . We need your kind of guidance and direction in our daily life to keep us looking up, for our inspiration to make the wise and knowledgable decisions in our lives. I look foreward to checking in on you every morning to read the information and important news you bring to us. You are a true patriot, and we also love the way your Daughter Sara handles the media, with Her no-nonsense way of control. "God Bless you, Sara, and America".

Civility went out the window when late night, former comics, became popular late night commentators. Stephen Colbert (sp?) for one, became a vicious anti-Trump rallying crusader. I had real hope in the 1960's that America would finally become one nation under GOD but than came the late 70's and the hate came back even stronger.

I could not agree more, Mike. After all that Barry Soetoro has done against this country and its citizens I never seen or heard of the kind of rhetoric that has directed to this president. Im sickened by it and wish them, the hate left to cease. I know after this coup d'etat attempt these people should never be allowed in office again.

I agree wholeheartedly. It hurts my heart to read the many unkind things said about Melania and Barron Trump and also about your daughter, Sarah. It must be very painful for you, too. Please let her know that I think she is terrific in so many ways and that I admire her courage and steadfast attitude in the face of so much negativity. She is a wonderful, Christian role model. You must be very proud of her, Dad!

How can one man endure and survive (literally and figuratively) to drain a D.C. swamp that we now know, is a sewer? A tsunami sewer! It flows to every agency, every government entity, and every local government. I’ve been worried we’ll become a 21st Century Third World Country ~ it feels in my heart, we’ve become exactly that. Our institutional corruption cannot be cleaned out by one man. And not one, they intend to investigate without relent, until he’s gone (one way or another). I cry for my country; I’m sad because we as people were busy living fat and crazy; we knew it was happening but it wasn’t hurting ‘us’ enough. Sometimes, things die without pain. Sometimes the pain alerts us too late. I’m afraid, we elected Trump too late. And now we pray ~ “Lord guide his hand to lead our land and make our values, morals, laws and equal justice right ~ in your eyes again”. America is under seige and she needs God to help our President, so that he, can help to raise us all to our better angel selves. Make America FREE again ~ freedom is our oxygen to thrive again. And God. Pray to God.

Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Matthew 7:3 NASB. Before you (a Baptist) and I (a Nazarene), as fellow evangelicals, concern ourselves with the hypocrisy of the left, etc., we ought to rectify the screaming discrepancy between the gospel and the support for Trump that has been spoken in public by yourself and many other so called leaders. You and some other leaders can try to sand off the rough edges with your dismissive, whitewashing public words, but the square peg won't fit in the round hole. As important as the abortion issue is to us, it doesn't give us license to turn the church into a lobbying group.

Politics is not a social discussion anymore. I am more familiar with what is going on than I have ever been in my life. I am grateful for the movement to clean up Washington, the courage of those who are "mucking out the stalls. " I wish I could talk to some of my friends and relatives about my views. But, I have to "know" their stance beforehand. There is something about the uncivil atmosphere, the lack of restraint in vitriol, that makes this impossible.

They became obsolete when social media brought everyone's comments out in the open for anyone and everyone to offer an opinion about. It also made hate very easy to hide behind comments, in some cases, where as in others it ruined people's lives and they lost their jobs and livelihood (but mostly only if you were a celeb of someone in the public eye being held to higher standards than the average Joe.) Social media is one of the worst things to ever happen, it's made people disconnected, and ingenuous, and instead of having real conversations with one another, we just cast our judgement on someone and offer our two cents whether we were asked our opinion or not.

It's easy to "spout off" when your "view" of life and values are assaulted and insulted by "the other side",
and as a Conservative-Christian I find myself getting angrier and more disappointed in what The (crazy,
corrupt, immoral, criminal) Left is doing to America (and) I really want to kill them sometimes. I probably
won't but I'm not feeling very confident in the future for our country, and I truly believe that there will be
a lot of violence coming before there is some "resolution"; regardless of who wins this war we're in.

So who is "David Crosby", again? Are we to kneel down at the very mention of the name (I haven't googled that one), like Kimmel and his ilk seem to think are deserving of such recognition? What a laugh.

Civility and decency became obsolete to the left when Hillary Clinton lost to President Trump! As to the Golden Rule it became obsolete when the liberal left (NEA) took over our educational system. When I was in college, the 60's, I learned that we started with the Puritans and the "old deluder satan law" and learning the alphabet to Bible verses to the anti God system that John Dewey started. I didn't learn about the anti God part until I got saved years later.

I surely agree with you 100%. The liberals say the most disgusting things about the Trump family but if a conservative says anything about anyone the liberals are the first to condemn. Hillary bashes President Trump every time she opens her mouth even abroad. In my opinion those bashers are jealous of the whole family because President Trump is wanting to get us out of the mess Obama made. Melania is a target because she is quite intelligent and beautiful as well as displaying pure class. The Trump children are great examples of good parenting. I do wish the liberals would stop displaying their ignorance and begin to work on the issues our country is facing. They do not seem to have the best interests of our citizens at heart only their own interests. God bless America and bless those in leadership who want the best for us. Thank you, Mr. Huckabee for all you do. I love your daughter and think she is doing a fabulous job.

  • Lois Early

As you know, Mr.Huckabee, “common human decency” is something that has to be taught because of our fallen natures. I look at all the rage and venomous hatred that has been spewing since the Presidential election and am totally taken a back. How can these people have this much hate in them. I’m sure most have come from what we would call “good” homes, but if they were Godless homes, then they weren’t taught the “Golden Rule” and possibly don’t know what it is. My heart hurts for these people and I can only pray that they find Jesus before it is too late.

Decency and Civility are obsolete, and it happened when the drug burnt brains of the 60's and 70's became the Professors teaching college students that winning a debate is shouting down you opponent, disrupting their speech with violence and assaults, and protest advocating not allowing their speech at all. Now these squash rot brain children, holding captive our youth, giving college credits for protesting and forbidding others free speech. Our representatives don't seem to know the difference in Constitutional Rights being protected and prevention of others expressing 1st amendment rights to speech. Gov. Huckabee do you support Term Limits as Fl.Gov Scott says he does, and will you support his Senate run against Nelson? Nelson said (yesterday on Fox w/ Dana Parino interview) that "Zuckerburg contacted me, because I'm up for ranking member and to be Chairman" bragging that his tenure in the Senate gives him power and importance with Zuckerburg types and a reason he should win over Scott. DOES ZUCKERBURG have more voice and influence with Sen Nelson than Floridians when you have tenure? Apparently so! That is where our Civility and Decency have gone!

it would appear that the agenda driven left has abandoned civiiity and decency. And the main reason, is Alinsky was neither. Communism and socialism are neither one. they hold everyone in contempt but self. now I hope you do notice that the right has both attributes. not in the measure that we should sometimes, but at least there is an attempt.

When hte, scorn and vitirol become the exception rather than the norm from the left. those attributes wil come back into vogue.

    Governor Huckabee
Words cannot express my appreciation for the encouragement you provide me. Thank you standing on your Christian values. Thank you for your articles. Your common sense approach to politics is to say the least refreshing. In my opinion this country missed the opportunity of a life time when we did not elect you president.

Civility went away when progressives decided that have the only opinions that count, and, therefore, those with alternative ideas are nothing but uneducated, stupid, unkind boors. Unfortunately, President Trump, much as I support most of his policies, has retaliated with courseness on his part. However, what he done to him, and his family, is so over the top that it makes the progressives look like the most mean spirited, arrogant, and smug people ever to inhabit the planet.

I have been following the US conservative media and commentators since shortly after Donald Trump became the Republican candidate because the commentary in our media here in South Africa and on social media clearly showed that there was a smear campaign going. I had been aware of Mr Trump in celebrity magazines such as Hello for decades and there had never been mention of "scandals" or adverse commentary on his personality. I've continued to follow your conservative media and commentators and I am truly shocked at the vindictiveness and barbarity of your duly elected President's leftist antagonists. They seem to have absolutely no respect for your democratic process, the office or the person of your President. And they certainly lack even a vestige of common decency, as you set out in your article. We have had a black government and President for the past 20+ years, with whose policies and actions I have seldom agreed, and our President has just been deposed and has to appear in court on charges of corruption and more. And still I have never referred to him in any way other than President Zuma. Perhaps because I am your President's age and have also grown up in "another time". And, what is more, the level of hatred and vindictiveness your President's antagonists practise, we see only in the actions of one very radical political party here, and only sometimes when they are speaking at rallies of "their own people". I'm afraid the people of my country, where the majority may be regarded as rather "barbarous" by most Western countries, operate on a level of natural dignity and respect for even their political enemies that your President's antagonists completely lack. Yes, the most "barbarous" people in my country will kill one another, but they do not pretend to be civilized and then speak and act like your leftist media and others do. Not to mention the kind of "rogue court" Mueller is practicing.

You asked when basic civility became obsolete. It has been dying for a long time but under Barack Hussein Obama's time in the presidency, he murdered it at every turn and is continuing to do so as Criticizer in Chief now along with his idiot savants, the Clintons. Donald Trump receiving the presidency in response to Obama's race-baiting, arrogant, irresponsible charm and this unthinkable turn of events sent out the alarm to all the globalist leftists in the country who hate us and the gloves really came off. The slope we're on is slippery and I don't see enough principled people in authority who are willing to exert their influence to put the brakes on...That's one reason I read all your posts. Your voice is as one in the wilderness...

Unfortunately Jimmy Kimmel has become one of those so-called celebrities that believe they know more and are more informed than anyone else. I have never understood why these people feel that their status makes them experts on anything and everything. Just because they feel one way doesn't mean they are the final say in how the rest of the country should feel. Mr. Kimmel has decided to become the spokesperson of the left wing liberals and expects everyone to follow his beliefs. I don't believe these folks realize that few people agree with their views. I know those of us living in the "fly over states" have totally different political views than Mr. Kimmel.
