“We have a hater in the White House. The Birther-In-Chief. The Grand Wizard of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. One of the things that we’ve learned is that while Jim Crow may be dead, he’s still got some nieces and nephews that are alive and well.”
It was rhetoric like this that ruled on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, and Dr. King deserved better. This is absolutely the last straw for me. Though I typically hesitate to comment in print on racial issues because it’s so easy to be misunderstood and end up with protesters screaming in one’s front yard, I just can’t sit by any longer and listen to this. The remark above comparing the President of the United States to a leader of the Ku Klux Klan was made on Monday by Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, at an event supposedly honoring Dr. King, and Rep. Jeffries should be ashamed of himself. Everyone who is spewing atrocities like this should be ashamed. Oh, but they won’t be. They’re proud of themselves for “speaking truth to power,” when what they’re speaking is not truth but just a steaming shovelful.

I can’t remember when I’ve been so fed up with this kind of garbage. Must be because this was the day we were supposed to be remembering Dr. King as a great leader and following his example. We don’t have truly great, monumental leaders like Dr. King today, and I wonder if they would even be given a place in our national conversation. Today, we have people who wrap themselves in the mantle of Dr. King but who demonstrate the opposite of what he stood for. The result: at a time when race relations should be really good –- we’ve twice elected a black President, for god sakes –- I mostly see hatred, violence and opportunism, and I am sick of it.
There certainly have been times when I wished President Trump had expressed himself with more precision, care and diplomacy, but the real hate I see is not coming from him. Most of the blind, seething, white-hot, deep-down destructive hate is coming from people who hate HIM. It’s as if they’ve been infected with an insidious virus or brain parasite that’s eating away at their cerebral cortexes. The rest of us are mostly observing quietly, afraid to say anything for fear of being labeled, wondering how bad it’s going to get and where it’s all going to end.
But I’m through with that and it's time to get a few things straight. People on the left who would tell me to “check my privilege” know nothing about my life, the privileges I’ve enjoyed or the challenges I’ve faced. They need to check their assumptions. I see many of them pointing fingers at others while hypocritically expressing blatant anti-Semitism, ageism, gender bias (against men), racism (against white people) and other unacceptable forms of prejudice, which they have rationalized through a ludicrous concept called “intersectionality.”
They say it’s racist to want border security. It’s not. “Brown” people, as they (not us) call the border crossers, are perfectly welcome if they immigrate legally. And we care to recognize that, economically, Americans of color are hurt by large-scale illegal immigration.
They say it’s racist to want to preserve Confederate war memorials. It’s not. One can hate slavery and racial inequality but see the point of historic preservation, knowing that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat at. In fact, that’s what Trump was talking about after Charlottesville when he said there were “good people” on both sides of the argument. He wasn’t talking about white supremacy, but about the issue of preserving historical artifacts.
They say it’s racist to wear a MAGA hat. It’s not. Sorry, leftists, but you are the only ones hearing “dog whistles.” There’s a great line I heard recently; wish I could credit whoever said it first: “If you’re the only one hearing dog whistles, then you’re the dog.”
I don’t have a MAGA hat but am ready to get one. I can wear it with my #WalkAway t-shirt.
There was plenty more hate expressed on MLK Day (and weekend). Much of it was directed at some students from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky who were shown in a video taken Friday at the Lincoln Memorial as they appeared to be confronting a Native American activist beating a drum. Yes, the video showed some of the boys in the background mocking his chanting –- not good, but these are dopey teenagers. Most importantly, though, the video was deceptively edited; they hadn’t confronted the Native American at all. In fact, he had approached them, after members of a thuggish activist group called the Black Hebrew Israelites verbally attacked them for wearing MAGA hats.
Because of those hats, the boys were accused of racism in the most vile language imaginable, while also (ironically) being pelted with racial slurs. When news outlets ran with the edited version instead of showing the students first being attacked, not only were the kids quickly condemned from all sides for something they hadn’t done, but the hate coming at them from the left was utterly insane.
I’m talking about calls for these 15-year-old boys to be violently maimed, tortured and killed, by stuffing them into wood-chippers (“hats first”), locking them inside their school and burning it to the ground, and so forth. Really, the tweets and other comments are so vile that I’d rather not quote them; just take my word if you haven’t seen them. On second thought, here’s one that at least isn’t filthy, just hateful: “I don’t know what it says about me, but I’ve truly lost the ability to articulate the hysterical rage, nausea and heartache this makes me feel. I just want these people to die. Simple as that. Every single one of them. And their parents.”
So this person was advocating mass murder, all because of a video that did not even accurately depict what had occurred. (Just a thought: isn’t this the very sort of vigilante mentality that used to lead to lynchings?) Fortunately, the whole hour-long confrontation was captured on video, so we can see what really happened.
This is not the America I want to live in. So, what to do? We have to speak up for reason and against blind hate. Twitter, which leaps to ban conservative opinion, is going to have to turn its attention to the leftist thuggery that it so loves to ignore. In breaking news, Twitter has banned one account that’s responsible for spreading the false Covington narrative; that’s at least a start. But if Twitter doesn’t start doing seriously better than this, well, who needs Twitter? Not me.
If a misleading or outright fake story causes brainless socialist jerks (sorry, “leftwing activists”) to respond with threats of violence and intimidation, victims should not hesitate to seek respite in court. Teen conservative CJ Pearson, who himself had his Twitter account locked for a time, has organized a Twitter campaign to serve every member of the media who “defamed, slandered and doxxed” the Covington boys. Good for him.

Those who lean right are being unfairly tagged as racist using the same strategy that was used with the MAGA hat. I, for one, refuse to accept that label or any other that I know to be untrue. I hope you feel the same. And I hope the next MLK Day will do a much better job of honoring Dr. King than this one did.
UPDATE on the story that helped ruin MLK Day
Not that leftists in the media will ever apologize for what they did to the Covington High School boys --- except perhaps by issuing insincere statements crafted by lawyers to fend off the threat of lawsuits --- but the truth of what happened is gradually emerging. If so-called “journalists” had just looked deeper into the story before running with the narrative of “white kids bad,” they wouldn’t have just pounded another nail into the coffin of their reputation.
Will journalism ever recover from this low point? If I were entering college now, I doubt that I’d be pursuing a communications degree. Come to think of it, I probably wouldn’t be entering college now at all. It would be too much of a dumbing-down. And brain cells are too valuable a possession to expose to such risk. With rare exception, going to college today would be like moving to Flint, Michigan, and chugging gallons of tap water daily.
Anyway, here’s an update on the manufactured firestorm that helped ruin MLK Day and dishonor that great man.
Deplorably yours,
LA
