The major German newspaper Der Spiegel revealed that one of its most renowned reporters, Claas Relotius, has been making up news for years.  In a case of journalistic fraud "on a grand scale," Relotius confessed to fabricating parts of at least 14 stories over the years, including an interview with Colin Kaepernick’s parents and a story about a sign on the outskirts of a Minnesota town reading “Keep Mexicans out.”  German media is calling this the biggest media fraud scandal since the Hitler diaries hoax.  Ironically, Relotius won awards for his investigative exposes, including CNN Journalist of the Year in 2014.

Wait, I’m confused: did CNN not know he was making up fake news, or is that what he won the award for?

Ainsworth: VOGUE trashes Christmas portrait of First Couple

By Mike Huckabee

The “progressive” New Yawk-ish elites at VOGUE magazine have done it again.  In the spirit of Christmas, they're running a story headlined “What’s Up With This Year’s Surreal White House Portrait,” slamming not just the Trumps’ official Christmas portrait, but them personally, as a couple.

First, in case you haven’t seen the portrait, let me say that it is beautiful.  The President wears a classic tux, and Melania shimmers in an elegant white dress with high neck and long fitted sleeves.  The background is a hall in the White House lined with traditional pine trees decorated in all-red ornaments and thousands of tiny white lights.  Classic.  It’s really stunning.

If Barack and Michelle had been pictured in exactly the same way, the editors at VOGUE would be falling to their knees in praise and writing epic poems to the portrait’s rapturous beauty.  But with Donald and Melania, they are relentless in their petty, hyper-partisan criticism.

Bump stocks

By Mike Huckabee

The Trump Administration has banned “bump stocks,” the devices that allow a shooter to fire a semi-automatic weapon continuously with one pull of the trigger.  It was one gun law that even some gun rights advocates were okay with (although others said it would likely be ruled unconstitutional). But the NRA plans to fight it in court due to the fact that there’s no allowance made for people who already own them.  The new policy requires current owners to hand in or destroy their bump stocks.  Some see that as setting a precedent for gun confiscation or the government seizing private property that was legal to own when purchased.

Considering that anyone with a little mechanical know-how could easily build a bump stock, this seems like a lot of legal effort and money expended on something that will likely make no difference to any determined mass shooter, but I guess it’s easier to focus on the hardware than deal with the real problems, such as lax enforcement of existing laws and a society that mocks morality and degrades the sanctity of life.  So prepare for a long legal battle over bump stocks.

Kavanaugh update

By Mike Huckabee

A judicial misconduct board has dismissed dozens of complaints filed against Brett Kavanaugh over his testimony before the Senate, when Democrats attempted to sandbag him with four-decade-old charges of sexual assault with no evidence.  The board ruled that because Kavanaugh has already been confirmed to the Supreme Court, under the law, lower level judges have no power over him.

Naturally, this didn’t set well with all the liberal activists who are still trying to hound him off the court, even after he ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood last week.  This will give you a feeling of déjà vu: because the decision went against them, they’re demanding that the system be changed (ahem…”Electoral College.”)

Personally, while I’m glad that all these endless partisan, nuisance complaints landed in the trash can where they belonged, I wish it had happened with a public debunking rather than on a technicality.  This ruling will just give liberals more ammunition to rant and rave about how life’s not fair, and launch more time- and money-wasting investigations (the incoming Democratic House is already considering one.)

I would have much preferred that the panel do what David French of National Review did over two months ago: examine all the accusations against Kavanaugh, weigh the facts carefully, and then dismiss them for being the groundless partisan mudballs that they are.

Asylum seekers

By Mike Huckabee

Someone in Washington needs to sniff Judge Emmett Sullivan’s egg nog, to see if it’s been spiked.  One day after he suggested in court that Gen. Michael Flynn might have committed treason or acted as an unregistered agent of Turkey while on the White House staff – two accusations that are not only false, but that he wasn’t even charged with – Sullivan joined the roster of federal judges who now think they’re President.

In ruling against President Trump’s recent changes in immigration policies, he didn’t just allow asylum seeks to pursue their lawsuits, he took the unprecedented step of ordering the Administration to return deportees back to the US. So taxpayers are not only expected to welcome and support illegal residents, we’re now supposed to pay to bring them back after they’ve been deported.

The ACLU brought the case, claiming that the plaintiffs are asylum seekers who face danger if they are returned to their native countries.  But the Justice Department argues that “under the laws passed by Congress” (gee, remember when judges actually read those?), “asylum is only for those who have a legitimate fear of persecution on the basis of their race, nationality, religion, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group,” not for those who would generally be safer here than in wherever they came from.

If the current broad, extra-legal definition of “asylum” is allowed to stand, virtually anyone who claims that it’s more dangerous in his or her native land than in the US would be allowed to come here --- which means we’d be obligated to take in the entire populations of dozens of countries.  That would spell the end of America.  Since that’s what Judge Sullivan’s ruling, taken to its logical extent, would result in, I feel I have to ask: Wouldn’t that be…treason?

Best gift book of Christmas

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a scary sign for the health of the publishing industry, and for literacy in general: Barnes and Noble released its annual list of the 20 best holiday gift ideas.  It includes mittens, a Buddha board, Mickey Mouse speakers, several kinds of socks…and only one book.

Even worse, it suggests that the people at Barnes & Noble don’t even know what the best gift book of Christmas 2018 really is:
