House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler says that Robert Mueller won’t be testifying next week, as had been planned. I think he figured out that Republicans would get to question Mueller, too.

News of the "fake impeachment," plus some outstanding reader comments
At this writing, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, led by 19-term (!) Congressman Jerry Nadler, have unanimously –- ludicrously –- voted to recommend to Congress that Attorney General Barr be held in contempt (even though, according to Rep. Andy Biggs, they had to admit the subpoena they sent to Barr was overly broad and improperly constructed). It’s Nadler and his cohorts who are contemptible. After incredible transparency from both Trump and Barr, they still want 1.5 million pages of “underlying” evidence from the special counsel investigation. They want more testimony from Trump’s lawyer, Don McGhan, even though he’s already testified for 30 hours. They also want thousands of pages of Trump’s tax returns, going back years.
They insist Trump obstructed justice. Well, guess what? Testimony from Michael Dreeben, an attorney for the special counsel’s office, confirms the timeline that the FBI (under Andrew McCabe) opened an investigation into obstruction of justice on the part of Trump BEFORE THE SPECIAL COUNSEL HAD EVEN BEEN APPOINTED. No wonder they can’t let it go.
In the face of relentless harassment and congressional abuse of power, Trump finally asserted executive privilege. There are more important things for him to be dealing with right now.
CNN called the President “a fraud and a con man” and “literally the biggest loser in the country” because he (along with others who tried) lost a lot of money building casinos in Atlantic City thirty years ago, which we already knew and which he’s already talked about and even written a book about. (As Victor Davis Hanson told Tucker Carlson Wednesday night, “He didn’t pay taxes on money he never made or money he lost.”)
Nancy Pelosi is musing about throwing Trumpsters into Dumpsters (as in, prison), when it’s her own party hacks who appear to have broken the law. We are talking full-blown psychodrama.
You’ve heard of “fake news”? What’s going on right now is “fake impeachment.” The Democrats know they can’t really impeach the President, given his high approval ratings, the churning economy, and the fact that enough people realize the special counsel investigation could make no case for a Trump/Russia conspiracy. It would be madness, politically, for them to do it, and they know that. (In fact, if they do it, we’ll know they really ARE certifiably insane and off their meds.) Yet they and their Trump-hating constituents live for it.
So as of now, they’re doing a “fake impeachment” –- trying to make the proceedings look as serious as a real impeachment would be without actually impeaching him (which they know wouldn’t have any traction in the Senate, anyway). They’re doing a pretty good job of fooling ignorant people, deliberately throwing in a lot of terminology from Watergate –- references to Nixon, etc. They also have to do whatever they can to discredit Barr, as they know he’s started peeking behind the curtain to see what the Obama Justice Department was up to and they are scared to death about what he may find. When you understand this, everything they’re doing makes perfect sense.
And don’t think they won’t pull out all the stops to get rid of Barr. Look at what they tried with Justice Brett Kavanaugh; they tried to turn him into a gang rapist. But it didn’t work with Kavanaugh, and whatever idiocy they try won’t work here.
For the moment, I’d like to set these stories aside and call attention to some outstanding and timely letters I’ve just received. These letters were in response to my commentary on documents that reveal Steele told the State Department he wanted his “dossier” out before Election Day, 2016.

Regarding: “this doesn’t give me much confidence in the current leadership of the FBI, especially considering the material is marked for declassification 12/31/2041 –- 25 years after the 2016 election,” one may regard classifying it at all as troubling, but there is usually no latitude with “declassify on” dates. If they classify it, according to the guide they use, it would have to be Date +25 years, or whatever. Your language implies the declass date is egregious or punitive, but it is unavoidably the nature of classification.

I surely didn’t intend to imply that, but thanks for bringing it up. Yes, I meant that classifying it AT ALL, at this late date, is troubling. The fact that guidelines call for such a lengthy period of classification just emphasizes what a big deal it is to restrict access in this way. And yet, they did. I want to know why they did.
FBI Director Wray has been maintaining a minimal public presence since he assumed his office. We don’t know for sure, but it may be that he’s an example of the typical insider who’s primarily interested in preserving an appearance of integrity to try to “save” the FBI. Sorry, Director Wray, but it’s a little late for that, as we already know you’re in charge of a swamp that needs to be drained. Recent quibbling over the use of the word “spy” didn’t help, either.
Now, here’s a letter that I’m sure speaks for many conservatives right now…

Dear Gov. Huckabee:
I am afraid to say that I think the USA is in a serious crisis. It's great that our economy is humming, it's great that we are largely at peace, and it's great that we are militarily strong.
But our soul has eroded. We (or at least many of us) have lost the will to keep our freedoms, and our citizens don't appear to understand what they are or why they are important. Our Constitution is not understood nor defended. All of the basic freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Right to bear arms, even Right to life, are under serious threat.
Where are our civil libertarians? Where are our jurists? Where is our leadership? Where is the media, and why isn't it exposing the attacks on our freedoms?
Long after President Trump has left office I predict we will be asking, "What happened?" What happened was most of us just sat there debating piddling issues and picking on Trump rather than dealing with real issues. Not many are dealing with facts.
The facts are indisputable: Because of the 911 attacks, we gave powers to our executive branch that have been grossly abused. This is an age-old pattern. Any time we grant power to government, government tends to abuse it. Maybe the first Chief Executive doesn't, but the successors inevitably expand the reach. This is the reason I call myself a conservative. Our founders brilliantly set up checks and balances intended to keep over-reach at bay. Our first President did what he could to set a solid example.
But now we have eviscerated those protections. We've made all three branches excessively attuned to short-term political considerations.
What accounts for this? At its essence we no longer seem to recognize good and evil. I've never witnessed so many public lies in my life. When a scandal is revealed, we persecute the revealer rather than decry the misdeed. In the end we are spiraling toward calling good, evil and evil, good. Justice is deliberately set aside for some petty political reason.
So why am I surprised? If the most basic freedom, namely the right to life, is abridged, why would anyone stand up for any other freedom?
I pray our nation will wake up. WOKE?, Ha. We are fast asleep.
Finally, here’s a heartfelt letter that I’m sure speaks for many other conservatives right now…

Gov. Huckabee, I have tried to tell my friends and my family about this, and they laugh at me. At first, I lost family and friends. Still not the same. My husband and I knew President Trump loved us and our country. My family and friends hate him. And will never believe him. So they will not discuss it with me. They say I’m crazy. So I have given up on trying to tell them. And I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t think they will ever not hate him or believe him. And that is so sad. And it makes me depressed. No one will listen. But you do, I hope. I feel all alone in this. And they have stopped seeing me now. Because they say I’m living in another virtual world. Thank you for letting me vent. I really do appreciate you. In fact, I listen to you all the time. Dianne

Dianne, you are not alone. Many thousands, perhaps millions, of people feel as you do, and some of them have no doubt read your letter. Thanks so much for making your voice heard. Someday your family and friends may know deep down that you were right --- though they may never be able to admit it. It could be worse --- at least your husband is on the same wavelength as you. And there are lots of other things to talk about with family and friends, though it can be tough to get politics-obsessed lefties to change the conversation.

For a long time, we heard “official” advice on how to deal with armed attackers, hijackers, etc. It was to just sit there, go along, don’t be a hero, don’t try to fight back… Well, that turned a lot of people into sitting ducks and got them killed.
Now, there’s a new trend rising in the wake of mass shootings: fighting back. Just as the passengers of United Flight 93 on 9/11 fought back and sacrificed themselves to save countless others, we’ve seen in recent mass shootings several unarmed would-be victims heroically fight back. Even when they were injured or lost their lives, their efforts saved many others.

While this obviously isn’t the best solution (enforcing existing laws, better policing of potential threats in advance and allowing armed security and teachers would be more effective with far less risk), these brave people who refuse to just sit and be victims are rightly becoming well-known in the media. That trend alone may help reverse the rise of mass shootings that began with the inadvertent fame the Columbine shooters received, and the perverse glory of it that inspired copycats.
I’ve had a longstanding policy in all my media outlets of refusing to name people who attack others like this. I call them “the shooter,” but I won’t give them the media notoriety they crave. But these citizen heroes - Lori Gilbert-Kaye, Oscar Stewart and Jonathan Morales of the Poway Synagogue; Riley Howell of UNC-Charlotte; and many others mentioned in the story at the link – their names should be in the headlines and history books, not the names of the twisted and cowardly attackers who target innocents. It's long past time that we returned to the idea that glory should accrue to those who deserve it.

Pete Buttigieg
If Pete Buttigieg wants to protect the image he’s tried to build as a reasonable, non-crazy alternative to the shuttlebus full of loons that makes up the current Democratic Presidential field, he should be more careful about whom he chooses to associate with and take money from. He’s hanging out with someone who actually insults Trump voters in even more vile and arrogant terms than Hillary Clinton did, and that worked out so well for her when the “deplorables” voted in the upper Midwest. His tactics generated a response
Thanks to the stunningly obnoxious behavior of Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims, who bullied and badgered an elderly woman and three young teenage girls who were peacefully praying outside a Planned Parenthood clinic, what was originally planned as a small protest there this morning became a major pro-life event with top leaders in the movement as speakers. It also gave birth to a new hashtag you could see on the protest signs: #ResignBrianSims.
