The juror who voted to convict Paul Manafort and still plans to vote for Trump again in 2020 is a perfect lead-in for today’s Must-Read Column by Salena Zito in the New York Post.

She asks the question that I see on social media all the time: “What will it take for these Trumpkins to abandon Trump?!” (FYI: “Progressives” think derogatory terms for large groups of people are hate speech, unless they’re people “progressives” don’t like, and then they’re “funny.”)  Ms. Zito’s short answer: they aren’t going to abandon Trump.  And it’s not because, as liberals claim, they’re in thrall to a “cult of personality” and refuse to see Trump’s flaws.  Actually, it’s Democrats who constantly fall for cults of personality, repeatedly exalting “charisma” above experience and confusing emotion-swaying rhetoric with actual accomplishments.

Commentary continues below advertisement

As Ms Zito says, Trump voters knew going in that “he was a thrice-married, Playmate-dating, Howard Stern regular,” and his Tweets often make them wince (I’m getting eye wrinkles myself just from doing that.)  I’m only too aware that one of the main ways his bio differs from mine is that it doesn’t say, “Before entering politics, he was a Baptist minister.” Americans voted for Trump knowing exactly what they were getting, and they will not abandon him over some ginned-up scandals or guilt-by-association or outrage over impolitic language that would never have made page 34 of the New York Times if it had involved a Democrat.

Those of us who studied American history back when real history was taught in schools also roll our eyes at all the claims of Trump’s behavior representing one “unprecedented” outrage after another.  Why, he’s impolite, rough-edged and combative (Andrew Jackson.)  He has sleazy associates who want to use their proximity to power to enrich themselves (Ulysses Grant, Warren Harding, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, etc. etc.)  He wants to put immigrants into detention camps (actually, Trump doesn’t, but FDR actually did.)  Heck, I could even name you a previous President who cussed like a sailor and threatened to personally beat up a journalist who bad-mouthed his daughter (Democratic icon, Harry “Plain Speaking” Truman.)

So why won’t Trump voters turn on him? First, because unlike the slick professional politicians the political and media establishment prefer, he doesn’t talk pretty and do nothing; he talks ugly but gets things done.  And second, because those promises were to take on the bloated, arrogant, power-mad, spend-happy elitist establishment of both parties and the bureaucratic state that is totally out of touch with the needs and concerns of regular Americans. If they abandon Trump, where do they go?  Who else is even talking about trying to “drain the swamp”?

Democrats can’t seem to understand that Trump supporters aren’t so much loyal to Trump (although many who voted for him just to keep Hillary out of the White House have expressed delight to me about how faithfully he’s kept his promises to be a pro-business, pro-defense, pro-freedom conservative.)  They are against what their government, the mass media and the financial sector had become – that arrogant, insulated and incompetent self-declared aristocracy that would appall and enrage the Founders – and he’s their instrument for dismantling it.  This is no surprise to me – as I’ve noted many times, I wrote a book on that exact subject, “God, Guns, Grits and Gravy,” that was published six months before Trump ever came down that escalator and announced his candidacy.

Ms Zito points out that the Democrats could put up their own version of Trump, but I would argue that they can’t.  No Democrat who called for reducing government power would get two votes in the primary.  The only acceptable revolutionaries among the Democratic candidates are of the Bernie Sanders/socialist ilk.  I don't think Americans want a champion who'll fight a bloated, corrupt government bureaucracy by making it much more powerful and five times bigger.

The Democrats now claim that because of the Michael Cohen plea deal that President Trump is now an "un-indicted co-conspirator". Is that statement accurate?

I totally agree with what you stated in your article. I will stick with Trump because he does what he says, provided he can cut through all the bs that the swamp sends his way!

Talk about hitting the nail on the head, well said! Those who know history and have pored over the constitution know exactly what you are highlighting. Keep it up!

THIS says it all!!! NO, Trump is not a minister and we knew that going in. I still believe it is God who raises up kings and takes them down. Mr. Trump will not go anywhere until he is finished with what he was put there to do. I only wish these people, who are being paid to protest would come to their senses!!! It is definitely starting to stink of something more than just protesting here in middle America.
BTW, I LOVE your commentaries!! They make my day.

Very well said Govenor. I voted for Trump in 2016 and will do so again in 2020. I am not voting for a Sunday school teacher, although I loathe corruption in government. I am voting for a man I believe is trying to fix this country. The Democrats offer no such candidate. Instead, they continue to trot out the same liberal progressives that got us into this mess in the first place. Liberals may have captured the media and the college campuses, but they have not captured the ballot box, and conservatives will use that power to vote them out in the upcoming mid terms and in 2020! Thank you for your strong conservative common sense voice!

The real reason of loyalty to trump. Media is the main problem for Dem. Liberal lies, 1/2 truth stories are a big factor why trump is liked. Hillary's e-mails and the FBI & DOJ did nothing. Only way democrats will ever get any respect back is when Hillary/Obama are charged with the crimes they committed. Americans know they are corrupt. Another thing is immigration, democrats want to keep open boarders, yet more 5/8 don't. Illegal immigration is a big problem for the average American. Don't forget Islam in America, believe that Americans don't want there beliefs in American culture. Most Americans don't want any Muslims to hold any political office because they believe that they will instill Islamic rule.. Look at Michigan, Islam has already invaded political offices. As long as democrats keep up the attacks on President Trump the deeper trump Americans will dig in. If democrats don't start "really" listen to the American people, the Democratic party is doomed to fail. Another issue is Antifa, democrats and liberals support this violent group, another bad move for democrats. Americans see Antifa as a domestic terrorist group. And the biggest thing democrats have done to hurt the party, supporting illegal immigrants. The media has hurt democrats when they report "immigrants" are being detained, the problem is they leave out one important word. "ILLEGAL"! There are more issues that Americans are mad at democrats for and one of the biggest is Benghazi, another is democrats wanting to abolish ICE, putting illegals before Americans citizens, democrats blocking the wall. Americans are fed up with democrats. As Americans see it democrats don't want to protect Americans or America. If democrats think 2016 election was strong for trump, if democrats keep the course they are doing, 2020 will be a title wave for Trump. Democrats can thank the mainstream media for the downfall of the Democratic party. If Trump is impeached, you can count on a civil war, and democrats will be the first target of the revolution. I pray this doesn't happen, but the so called "witch hunt" is a ticking time bomb that the democrats and deep state don't see or can't! They think no American will do anything if President Trump is impeached. They would be dead wrong! I've been watching Twitter closely. Americans are tired of corrupted, crooked FBI, DOJ & DEMOCRATS... just telling you what the main issues I read on the conservative side. I've tried to talk with the liberal democratic side and was called filthy names, been threatened so I tend to stay of that side.. Funny thing was I asked if they could explain why they hate republicans. Its not Republicans at all. Its Mr Trump. I was shocked that they didn't say anything about the Republican party only President Trump. Sad that people are so filled with hate.

I am a Baptist minister and a Trump supporter. We knew what we were getting when we voted for him. You are absolutely correct, his supporters wanted a difference maker and we got one. I believe that every new allegation energizes his base and causes his support to grow. The common man is sick of slick politicians and were ready for such a man as Trump

Always enjoy your comments...thank you for helping get President Trump elected...I have personally worked on every republican president camp. for 50 years...and I love Reagan...but ...our families really LOVE TRUMP. We don't think he talks ugly....he says what most of us would say...I like Newt ... for the same reasons...He tells the truth and tells it like it is....and no.... he is not perfect...but none of us are...I do get tired of the so called christians saying he is not a christian...He has lived a more christian and conservative life than any other person I know or know of. Pres. Trump gave of his own time ..his own money ...has for over 45 years helped people ...and has never expecting a thank you...The most unqualified president was obama...Trump is probably the most qualified....on business, on foreign policy..negotiating ..saving money...being a my life time...President Trump is the biggest miracle I have seen by the hand of God...after finding out how corrupt our congress and gov. and fbi cia doj cia...and the dems and rinos...if Hillary had won...America would have been gone..andn our Constitution.. most people do not know how close we came to loosing it all....keep fighting for us...

We are at a critical stage in America. President Trump has a time sensitive Decision regarding the Dosier, the Deep State, the DOJ, the AG and the liberal/ Democrats making a mockery of this Country our values and our Constitution. President Trump is our last chance to regain back control of our Country.
    Let's all pray for that.

This article is right on. I don't care about Stormy, Manafort (although this would never have happened to him except he worked for Trump), sleazebag Cohen. Trump will have my vote always. Keep up the great work in telling us the truth. And tell Sarah we love and respect her!

    Excellent Gov Huckabee,
This is EXACTLY how we feel. E X A C T L Y a thousand times! Why they don't get it, I will never understand. We will support Donald J. Trump forever. I love his grit and how he just lets things roll off his back. His positivity is amazing. It must be from sitting in the church of Norman Vincent Peale, 'The Power of Positive Thinking, while he was growing up. A lot of people don't know that. It can't be ignored ---> Your raising!

Great article, I cringe when I see Trump shooting him in the foot and needs to quit the media ammunition to destroy him. During the primaries I vowed to never vote for Trump> However win the only choice was Hillary or voting for a write in who could not be elected I held my nose and voted for him. I have no voice except my vote but you do and I urge you to continue calling it as you see it. If by chance Trump does not survive this term, Consider running, We need a strong principled Christian to lead this country
