(Warning: This story contains some very shocking content and is for adults' eyes only.)
There is a story going all around the media about the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. It started with an article in the Times of London that referenced biographer David Garrow, who describes newly-released FBI memos discussing alleged secret tapes made by bugging Dr. King’s hotel room. The FBI files allegedly include claims that King had affairs with up to 40 women, engaging in a sex orgy and watched as a pastor friend raped a female parishioner.
A number of publications rejected this story, but it eventually came out, mostly because of Garrow, who won a Pulitizer Prize for his previous biography of King and who, as a “Democratic socialist,” can’t be accused of being hostile to Dr. King. He says this "poses so fundamental a challenge to his historical stature as to require the most complete and extensive historical review possible."
As someone who has always been deeply inspired by the actions and words of the Rev. King, I am both very disturbed by these allegations and deeply skeptical. For one thing, even Garrow hasn’t heard these alleged tapes, which aren’t set for release until 2027. All he has to go on is FBI memos talking about King and the tapes. We know that at the time, J. Edgar Hoover and others in the FBI hated and feared Dr. King and were determined to get any dirt on him and use it to blackmail him into ending his civil rights crusade. A corrupt law enforcement agency that would spy on an American citizen in an attempt to extort him would hardly flinch at lying about him or framing him, or badmouthing him in internal communications they never expected anyone to see (wow, this story suddenly seems awfully relevant to today.)
I would urge everyone who hears this story to bear those facts in mind before making any judgements. All this is based on is half-century-old secondhand comments written by notoriously biased people with a big ax to grind. There is, as yet, zero evidence to back it up. I’m upset that I even have to write about it, but the lack of evidence didn’t stop major media outlets from turning it into a big story, so I have to comment on it.
Sadly, we live in an age where believing accusations without evidence or due process, even against people from different times who are no longer around to defend themselves, is considered “social justice.” In this article, a reader makes a thought-provoking argument: even if it does turn out to have some truth to it (a big if), could some good come of this if it is seen as a bridge too far that finally ends the left’s war on historical figures? Would leftists really demand that we demolish Dr. King's dream and fulfill the dreams of his enemies by renaming all the streets named after him or tearing down his memorial in Washington? Please read it to the end.
As the reader notes, maybe this will spell the turning point at which these mobs with torches who are burning history books and smashing statues finally grow up and realize that there are no perfect human beings -- that people with deep flaws can do great things, and that when we commemorate the great things they did, we aren’t glorying their faults.
(Warning: Not Nice Language At Link) Well, one Democratic politician finally apologized for this, how many more to go?
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is miffed at the New York Times for allegedly not doing its job as a loyal lapdog for the left, which includes always painting conservatives in the worst possible light and using photos of them taken only in mid-sneeze. The story is about former Trump aide Hope Hicks allegedly wrestling with the “existential question” of whether to comply with a House subpoena. AOC attacked the paper both for story and its photo of Hicks, which she claimed was a “glamor shot” of someone who’s “considering participating in a cover-up led by the President.”
Wow, so much wrong on so many levels. First, there is no “cover-up.” All of these officials have already given countless hours of testimony to Robert Mueller’s team, who found no crimes. And the very people who were screaming “cover-up” last week are now screaming like stuck pigs because Trump allowed the Attorney General to declassify any and all secret documents to find out what the investigators were up to.
Second, as the linked op-ed points out, the Times article is 22 paragraphs of conjecture and fake news because Hicks never talked to them about whether she was wrestling with an existential question, an alligator or anything else.
Finally, what isn’t mentioned here, but what I’m sure “Huckabee” contributor Laura Ainsworth would notice (she’s written about these hyper-consumer-driven women's magazines inexplicably pushing socialism before): One of the biggest boosters of AOC is Glamour magazine, which writes regular fawning articles about her, all illustrated with beautiful glamor shots of her, and I haven’t heard her complain yet.
Here are a couple of examples of Glamour’s hard-hitting political headlines about AOC:
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wore a Cape to the 2019 State of the Union - A Congressional Superhero” and “What Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Hoop Earrings Mean to Latina Women Like Me.” Here are a lot more, in case you want to start off your week feeling a little queasy.
The moral is that she who lives in a glass house whose walls are lined with glamor shots shouldn’t throw stones.
Remember Michael Wolfe’s anti-Trump garbage book, “Fire and Fury”? It got a lot of media hoopla for its salacious claims about Trump and his family that Trump and his inner circle called a pack of lies until Wolfe was finally forced to admit that he had no evidence to back it up.
Well, Wolfe has another anti-Trump book coming out which I’m not going to help publicize by naming it. This one’s not even out yet and already its key “bombshell” claim – that Robert Mueller drew up an obstruction of justice indictment against Trump – has already been denied by…Robert Mueller. His spokesman told Fox News, “The documents described do not exist.”
Let’s hope that the fact that the only person who would know the truth has already debunked it as a steaming pile of horse apples will be enough to keep talk shows from booking this known fabulist. But of course, he’ll still get plenty of TV time when he’s called in to repeat his nonsense over and over to various House committees.
The latest mean, cruel, heartless OUTRAGE from President Trump: he wants to force the sponsors of immigrants to pay back the taxpayers for any welfare benefits they receive. How horrid!
Oh, did I mention that’s already a federal law signed by President Bill Clinton, which the government has just never bothered to enforce? And that Trump’s move is praised by a black conservative group because these immigrants are using up resources that were meant to help poor Americans?
Our prayers today for those affected by the large tornado that struck last night near Trotwood, Ohio, about eight miles northwest of Dayton. At this writing, about five million people in Ohio are without electricity. The full extent of the damages isn’t fully known yet, so watch the news for updates. In the meantime, Red Cross shelters are open for those who need them. And if you’d like to help, you can make a donation at www.redcross.org .
I imagine most Americans have no more interest in the European Union Parliamentary elections than they do the latest cricket scores. But this weekend’s results are sending shockwaves that could realign the entire continent, and it appears to be part of a worldwide movement, at least partly fired and inspired by Donald Trump’s 2016 victory.
Across Europe, in Italy, France, Greece, Poland and other nations, conservative populist and nationalist parties made big gains while leftwing/socialist parties fell like dominoes. This will give you an idea of how widespread the leftist carnage was.
In the UK, the big winner in the EU Parliamentary elections was the Brexit Party, formed just seven weeks ago, which ran on a platform of getting out of the EU. Leader Nigel Farange said, “We'll take our seats, I hope we're not there for too long.”
You know liberalism is taking an undeniable beating worldwide when even the New York Times has to grudgingly admit it.
It wasn’t all good news (the radical left Green Party also made gains.) But the overall message was that the people are fed up with being told by entrenched pompous elitists that they must sit down, shut up and take it as their traditions and national identities are obliterated, their free speech is crushed, their jobs and lifestyles are sacrificed on the altar of “climate change” as their leaders continue riding in jets and limos to their mansions and eco-conferences, and their countries are overrun with migrants who refuse to assimilate.
This follows a stunning week of worldwide popular rejections of smug leftist central planners, from Australia to India to Europe. Just as here in America, the left was certain that, having taken over the media, entertainment and academia, they had brainwashed and browbeaten people into falling in line and that their eternal reign was an inevitability, with everyone too afraid to stand up to them for fear of being branded a racist/Nazi/white supremacist. Sadly for them, their nations still have free elections, and now a lot of leftist politicians will soon be looking for real jobs. With their resumes, good luck with that.
The unrepentant champion of open borders, Angela Merkel, remains in power in Germany, but her governing coalition has been significantly weakened, and she’s halfway through her final term. She’s warning about “dark forces” in the rise of nationalist candidates and saying that German children need to be taught about their history to avoid a repeat. I couldn’t agree more, but let’s teach them what Nazism was really all about, and that “Nazi” isn’t just a name you call a political opponent who wants secure borders. She warns in this article…
…about the rising tide of anti-Semitism and how synagogues in Germany must be guarded by police, yet she seems to see no connection between that and her decision to allow in a million migrants, mostly Middle Eastern Muslims who refuse to assimilate to German culture.
This blind spot is widespread among European leaders, but it’s glaringly obvious to their citizens who don’t live behind walls and armed guards, hence this weekend’s smackdown at the polls.
As blogger Niall Kilmartin points out, the German government deals with Islamophobia by censoring any criticism of Muslims by force of law. It deals with anti-Semitism by warning Jews to avoid appearing too Jewish in public and bringing attacks on themselves. And then, it accuses anyone who objects to such policies of being the second coming of the Nazis.
At this point, the best that can be said of Angela Merkel’s long tenure is that nobody will ever say she was the worst leader Germany ever had.
