It’s bad enough that California taxpayers have to worry about getting stuck by discarded drug needles.  Now, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democrats in the state legislature want to stick them with the cost of having California become the first state to provide free government health care to tens of thousands of illegal immigrants.  Under the deal (which has yet to pass, but undoubtedly will), illegal residents age 19 to 25 would be allowed to enroll in Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid.

The cost is estimated at $98 million.  But if I were a betting man, I’d bet the farm that it will be far more than that, with far more demand for care than anticipated, far more illegal residents claiming to be in the eligible age group than estimated, and free health care proving to be a giant magnet to attract more illegal immigrants who will come pouring in.

Trust-busting tech giants

By Mike Huckabee

Well, this is an interesting development: the leftwing Daily Beast claims that President Trump is “right as rain” in wanting to bust up the big tech giants such as Google, Facebook and Twitter, a position even some on the far left such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren agree with.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-resistance-we-need-the-trump-administration-gears-up-to-trust-bust-the-tech-giants?ref=home

Via their monopolistic power and business practices, these tech titans have ticked off the left by allegedly promoting income inequality and a “gig” economy, and the right by censoring and silencing conservative voices.

How ironic will it be if the right and left join forces to trust-bust these companies and there’s nobody to defend them because it turns out that Facebook doesn’t have any real friends?

Hardly Draconian

By Mike Huckabee

Just because Congress voted to ban earmarks, that doesn’t mean the federal budget isn’t stuffed full of more pork than a Wendy’s triple Baconator burger.  Politicians have a way around that.  Instead of sneaking specific spending items into the budget, they pad the budgets for the federal bureaucracy, then steer that extra money to their districts.  As this article in The Hill reveals, at the end of the last fiscal year, agencies had over $100 billion left in their budgets that it suddenly became necessary to blow.  Some of these last-minute necessary expenditures included a $9,000 leather chair, over $673,000 for golf carts, and $4 million for lobster and crab.

This is worth remembering when you hear that any attempt to reduce federal spending is a “draconian cut” that will result in children and the elderly going without food.  If they’re really hungry, I know where they could load up on lobster and crab.

A second death

By Mike Huckabee

Just two days after former Arkansas state Sen. Linda Collins-Smith was found shot dead in her home, another Republican former state Senator has died under similar mysterious circumstances.  Former Oklahoma state Sen. Jonathan Nichols was found shot dead in his home in Norman, his body wrapped in a blanket.  There is no known connection yet, but the strange similarity is sparking suspicions.  Let’s hope the police get to the bottom of both murders quickly, and in the meantime, we extend our prayers and condolences to both victims’ families.

Must-read column

By Mike Huckabee

Must-Read Column:  Last week, I wrote about how exhausting it must be to be a “journalist” these days because you can’t just report the news.  You have to take every story, find some way to twist it into an anti-Trump piece, and work backwards from there.

At the link, Kyle Smith of the New York Post takes up the same premise and offers some stunning examples of the creatively deranged ways in which some of our cable news talking heads had a meltdown over Trump’s visit with Queen Elizabeth for the D-Day observance.  Maybe you thought that was a warm, cordial, patriotic and very successful visit.  Well, shows what you know.  It was a disaster OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!!!

My favorite line in here is Smith’s comment that if Trump said, “I like people,” CNN would report that he’d admitted to being a cannibal.

Laura Ainsworth answers reader comment from Annette (and a few more)

By Laura Ainsworth

(Laura asked to reply to this letter personally, as she is not as nice as the Governor.)

From Annette:

This "travesty" is just another example of what your "ruler extraordinaire" cares about –- and it certainly is not the American public! He has done absolutely nothing to defend Mr. Manafort , that I have read about. First he claimed he didn't even know him, then when the going gets rough, he throws him under the bus! Yep, this dictator is a real upstanding "leader"... See what he does for his friends? NOTHING! Yet you all but worship him... brings to mind the Jim Jones debacle.

From Laura:

Wow, Annette, Jim Jones? If anyone has drunk the Kool-Aid, it’s you.

Manafort update:  An absolute must read

By Mike Huckabee

Turns out, when I said that I –- for once –- actually agreed with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on something, I was in some extremely good company. Here is an ABSOLUTE MUST-MUST-READ article by Monica Showalter saying just what we’ve been saying here, only in stronger language and with some new information.

Did you know that Manafort is now in a wheelchair? That Rikers has no air conditioning (or even ice water) and that at least one prisoner has died there during a heat wave? That Alan Dershowitz quotes a judge saying that this move is about pressuring Manafort to cooperate in taking down Trump on unrelated real estate cases? That, ironically, this treatment of Manafort echoes what happened in Russia to a man named Sergei Magnitsky, whose death in prison led to sanctions being placed on Russia through the passage in 2012 of the Magnitsky Act?

If Manafort is transferred to Rikers, it will make him, in effect, a political prisoner. Putin must love this. Gosh, the Chinese, too.

Deep State: First, the attempted coup. Now, the political prisoner ...
