I often ignore the current hair-on-fire responses to the latest Trump tweet until I see whether it will last beyond the next Trump tweet. These constant howls of outrage over everything Trump says and does are starting to make me feel like the owner of a dog that barks at everything. At some point, you stop leaping out of bed to see if there’s a burglar and just start fantasizing about kicking the dog. But in the past couple of days, there have been a couple of flare-ups that seem to have legs and illustrate larger points. So let’s take a closer look:

The latest wails of faux horror are over Trump saying that Democrats who sat on their hands when he mentioned the military or the flag were committing “treason,” and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly saying that Trump’s immigration plan would even help people who were “too lazy to get off their a**es” and apply for DACA. Democrats apparently don’t like being accused of treason (who knew?), and Kelly’s comment has the Hispanic caucus accusing him of racism.

That’s something I take very seriously. Having grown up in Arkansas, I saw the evils of racism and segregation firsthand. In my state, it took a Republican President (Eisenhower) sending in the Army to force Democratic Gov. Orval Faubus to integrate the schools. As a kid, I watched the news of civil rights activists like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. risking their lives to battle racism and segregation. Racism isn’t just an ugly personality trait, it’s an offense against God, who made all of us in His image. But just as racism should never be tolerated in our society, it is such a grievous sin that we should also be careful never to diminish its gravity by falsely accusing political opponents of it.

John Kelly is a retired US Marine General, steeped in the ultimate colorblind merit system. Saying that people who hadn’t done the most that they could do were “too lazy to get off their a**es” might be a racist comment – or it might be the kind of blunt language I’d expect from an ex-Marine commander. With a charge as serious as racism, and lacking any insights into what is in his heart, his critics should err on the side of caution. Condemn his words as unseemly or insensitive; but if you don’t have proof that he’s a racist, quit throwing around that verbal grenade as if it were a mudball.

Likewise, Trump is constantly under fire for “outrageous” and “offensive” things he says or tweets that to me appear obviously to be jokes. In both these cases, the vocabularies and senses of humor (those of ex-Marine commanders and New York construction bosses) are certainly much less genteel than those of a former Baptist minister from Arkansas. I admit, that “treason” joke wasn’t one I’d do. It’s the kind of sarcastic jab typical of New Yorkers. But that doesn’t mean I assume these men harbor the most base and evil motives simply because they express themselves in a more…”colorful” way than I would.

Journalist Salino Zito hit the nail on the head when she observed that the media take Trump “literally but not seriously,” while his supporters take him seriously, but not literally. I don’t believe for a second that Trump seriously thinks it’s treasonous not to clap during his State of the Union speech. But I do believe that a lot of liberals fervently want people to believe he really meant it, so they’ll get too riled up to think straight and vote them back into power.

Commentary continues below advertisement

Finally, for the record, it’s also hard for me to buy the pearl-clutching outrage act over and over and over, every time Trump makes an allegedly offensive joke. Especially when it’s coming from the same delicate souls who think Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee are hilarious. Their comic idols have so normalized vicious attacks on the President as “humor” that Kathy Griffin was honestly stunned to discover that anyone thought holding up a replica of the President’s bloody severed head as a “joke” might be taking it a bit too far.

This outrage comes from the party of Obama who said the Republicans could come along if they wanted to but they would have to ride in the back of the bus. I don't think he was kidding.

    I totally agree.
Never have I seen accusations about every thing the President does and says.

    It's getting more than ridiculous.

I regard the charge of calling someone a racist equal to calling someone the N word. Both make a judgement of a person's character. Unless we really know someone that judgement should not cross out lips.

As a Christian, I really think the liberals' spiritual darkness is so severe that they can't "hear" or "read" the Truth. You probably see this too. The liberal media is also so blind it's embarrassing. I would like to see a regular person, especially a Christian conservative, give the news and compare it to the lamestream media. Now that would be funny.

I have to admit that when President Trump began to run for President, I did not want to vote for him. He is not politically correct, a career politician, nor is he trying to please people. His main interest is making America great again. Our recent officials have tried ot destroy the founding principles that we hold so dear. I back our President and Vice President and pray for them daily. For the past eight years, the prior President tried to remove this very privelege from us. We pray for our Lord to move in our country, but resist His changes. He, after all, was not politically correct.

I am so happy you are America First. Your newsletters are excellent and hit the nail on the head every time. You write these news letters that we everyday folks can clearly understand. I am an American by choice. Having been born and raised in the NAZIDEMOCRACY, yes, it's not an oxymoron, I know me to be an exegete extraordinaire to expose the incredibly, bestially, savage nature of a democracy, any democracy, be that Nazism, Communism, dictatorship, tyranny, fascism, oligarchy, or banana republic. Call them what you want, but all these are nothing more than synonyms for democracy. Fueled by legalized plunder, called social security, democracies control their people. That is precisely the oposite of what the Founding Fathers had assembled here. Theirs was a REPUBLICAN FORM, not a democracy, where by courtesey of the God-given right to be fully armed ( Luke 11:21; 22:36) each American citizen was openly declared to be a SOVEREIGN citizen and government to be nothing but a hired SERVANT with no concerns other than to discharge the responsibilities assigned to him. As you can see the Second Amendment is the epitome of America's existence. Without it there would be no America today. It is therefore extremely important, seeing that we are to be a REPUBLICAN FORM of government, that, unless Americans are reawakened to this intended form of government, President Trump's agenda to make AMERICA GREAT AGAIN will enjoy only temporary success, if any at all.

I urge you the make anyone with whom have or come to have contact, to be purged of that ghastly word DEMOCRACY and use the real definition of our government, because a DEMOCRACY controls and a REPUBLICAN FORM is controlled.

Governor, your insight is wonderful! Love your editorials and commentary, and so pleased and proud that your beautiful daughter Sarah has your common sense. I think President Trump tweets some outrageous things just to 'yank the liberals' chain'...he's playing them! I get a kick out of their explosions every time he tweets. I bet he does too.

This article is so true. We conservatives elected Trump because he isn't the run of the mill DC politician. Yes his choice of wording can be off color, but the meaning in our minds is very clear. Not all people are lazy but many are because they and those family members before them have learned how to scam the system and not be apart of the productive society , but rather the leaches on it.

As a Christian I have many times found President Trump's remarks crude and inappropriate and I followed him closely during the very interesting campaign. What I found was a human being who was flawed (like me) and yet a true patriot (like me). A businessman not a politician, a very intelligent man who understood the "average Joe" because he worked along side them for years and years. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing then and he knows what he is doing now. That is the only reason the swamp dwellers hate him...he is accomplishing things no president before could have done without worrying about what "people might say". I watched nasty Nancy sit on her hands at the State of the Union and looked around. I am willing to bet there were many who did not stand or clap because she did not...they were afraid! So I thank God every day for a President who is not afraid... a President who has courage and who is going to make a huge impact on the future of America. Reminds me of some of my Bible heroes (and women also so thank you Melanya) like David and Paul and Sampson and...oh wait a minute! They were not perfect were they? Hmmmm Well the one redeeming factor is this ... I firmly believe the swamp will be "eating crow" one day.

Like you, Governor, I find it humorous that the left is so outraged at Trump's behavior, but find partial birth abortion; not taking care of our military and veterans; and, the rights of non-US citizens supreme to our citizen's rights as perfectly normal. What happened to representing their districts and their voters? As we Cowgirls say, "Put your big girl panties on and deal with it!"

As usual, your remarks are not only true, but well thought out and expressed with humor and intelligence. Don't stop speaking out against the insanity that's gripping the left. (And when are the Democrats going to admit their own party's truly racist origins?)

With the rise of Reality T.V. and talk shows that sensationalize everything, the news media's response seems to be, "WE NEED TO BE CAPTIVATING" too. Let's be honest. The fact that congress agreed on a two year budget is news but not nearly as interesting as president Trump saying the democrats were "treasonous." Have you noticed that every time some bill needs to pass or some person needs to be confirmed, some crazy tweet comes out. I believe this president, who spent most of his public life in the spot light knows what will get the media riled up. And reporters, being reporters, and a lot of them are millennials, know that it's a lot more interesting to hype up the "crazy tweet" from the president. Let's be honest, politics is not nearly as interesting and networks want their ratings up. I'm just saying! :)

I pay about as much attention to the liberal media, Hollywood, D.C. Swamp creatures and Democrats as I do to the weather in Ghana, which is exactly zero. Let them wear themselves out with their nonsense; even toddlers eventually stop holding their breath to get their own way.

    02/08/2018 02:57 PM

I, too, am sick and tired of the Democrats over-reacting to everything that comes out of a non-Democrats mouth. For heaven's sake, these people need to get a life! If they are truly so unhappy, move to another country! I pray every day for the Lord to bless this country and its people - ALL people - with appreciation for His mighty works and the gift of our freedoms. I also ask Him to wake up Millenials so they can smell what's really brewing (and it ain't Folgers) and to infuse the Democrats with humbleness and humility so they can see the errors of their way. God bless you, Mike, for speaking truth!

I am also thankful for your daughter, Sarah, and her wisdom in dealing with the media.
God bless you and your family!

    02/08/2018 02:30 PM

Two points I wish to make:
First, liberal media are so fast to pounce on every word the president utters that they can distort or malign him with. At least President Trump's comments are his own and not just read off a Teleprompter.
Secondly, the liberal media ignore every major achievement made on Trump's watch as if it is unimportant or never happened. Go figure. Case in point: how many will report today's record low unemployment claims?

As far as General Kelly's comment being "racist," since when is a lack of initiative or laziness limited to just one race? That's the liberal's favorite line when they have nothing else to say, which is often.
Keep making America Great Again! Thanks for keeping it real.

I think that the DACA people should get off their butt's and respect our country and if they wanna remain in this country then they should do it like other migrants have done it through the process of becoming legal citizens, so many who went through the process are very upset with these DACA people because they had to go through a long process to become citizens. No amnesty until they go through the right channels. Deplorable in Indiana.

Ruston Hill, Thank you for your comprehensive comment. You nailed it, I also think the Left is rather childish to keep labeling Conservative speech. Do they not realize how schoolyard bullyish ( a new word?) they sound? I have never seen Politics so vicious from the Democrats. Communist have amped up their efforts to take over America and it's on an increased insidious, dangerous nature! My kin who are Democrats naively think their Party is still that of John Kennedy. For readers FYI, I am nearing my 80th B'day so I've seen a lot of Politics over the years! Never like now!

Trump can be funny if he wants to; he cracks jokes, to ease tensions and get a point across at the same time. But blame it on his 'Empire State of Mind'. He is a New Yorker, they are known for their sarcasm, whether good or bad. The nicknames duing the 2016 primaries were hysterical. Even he smiles.

    02/08/2018 01:23 PM

We agree with the treason comment. If you view that comment in the entirety of the current environment, rather than an isolated statement in a vacuum, it is accurate. There is an attempt here to topple a sitting president and that is treasonous. Imo Failing to support great news for America as a whole is on the border of treason, not actually treason, but it demonstrates a mindset that wouldn't object to treason if it happened. As for DACA being lazy, they absolutely are, and irresponsible, because they have had literally years to get in the legal line and make themselves legal but they didn't do that and many didn't even sign up for DACA. Lazy, stupid, radical, unappreciative, unpatriotic, whatever - they all lead to the same result of doing nothing the right way.

Of COURSE the "media" is a pack of Gibbons up in the trees yapping and screeching at the Tiger just passing under it. Comfort in comradship. And OF COURSE, the mantra is "I'm not going down there....he'll EAT me". (BTW, why is the Hispanic political swampdweller objecting? Did General Kelly mention Latinos? Methinks he doth object too loudly.) No, God answered the prayers of MILLIONS of Americans who were FED UP with the quo which was status for about 28 years. We had to put a stop to the Socialization of The United States! Now, we have work to do. God Bless America! God Bless and Guide President Trump!

    02/08/2018 12:44 PM

The "racism" card is thrown out so ubiquitously (among other ad hominem epithets, by the virtue signaling left) that I dare say it's starting to lose it's intended effect and can hardly be taken literally OR seriously anymore. Racist (what percentage of the American people REALLY judge or hate folks now simply because of the deepness of their suntan), misogynist (how many conservative men--the majority of us who are married--actually hate those among us who carry the XX chromosome), homophobe (how many among us actually FEAR people who have a same-sex attraction), and let's not forget the full completion of the basket of deplorables, the infamous xenophobe (how many of us FEAR anyone who is not of Indo-European descent) are all ad hominem fallacy arguments liberally tossed out by the left for the sole reason that they have no other argument. These ad hominem arguments have become so pervasive in popular political rhetoric that they have really lost any relevance whatsoever. The definitions of those ad hominems (which are used almost exclusively against white males) have been stretched so far as to be appropriate almost anytime a white male disagrees with an opinion of the left. For instance, if I disagree with a feminist, I'm a misogynist (never mind the notion that most radical feminists are indeed guilty of misandry, the hatred of men). If I disagree with a minority, I'm a racist or a xenophobe, and if I personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and all sexual intimacy outside of that union is contrary to what is best, well then I'm a homophobic religious bigot.

Mike, if we are operating under the new cultural Marxist definitions that whenever I disagree with the left I am a racist, homophobic, xenophobic, bigot, maybe we should just accept the schoolyard name calling mantra and move on with the argument. I really had rather hoped that name-calling stopped being a argumentative technique in elementary school. It's sad that the rhetoric in Washington seems to be stuck at the level of 2nd grade juvenile polemics, whether one is an elected official or a "professional" journalist. Is this really the apex of Western Civilization?

I think the majority of us that voted him in realize all of these things you've talked about. We know how he is and sometimes we may cringe a little when he says something a little out there. The difference is we understand him a little maybe? I'm grateful we have a leader that has interest in and is doing something about the problems we face as Americans. It was time for some inspiring, patriotic, religious agendas to again come back into focus. We personally never stopped but became angry with the unspoken closed lip policy on our Christian faith was happening right before our eyes. It still is, but the majority is not ashamed to speak of our faith now. I guess a leader who promotes/allows opens some up where otherwise they would keep silent.

I'm a daughter of a WWII Veteran deceased and the strength of our military is very important. My dad and his unit were the first to liberate the Jewish from Dachau. His secret unit was attached mainly to Darby's Rangers. When people out there call the President Hitler I scratch my head. They have no idea. In fact they are bordering on thoughts and actions as Hitler's Regime. I hate this New World Order mess, to be blunt, and do feel that the Democratic Party is becoming Socialists, maybe a few Republicans as well. I also believe that a safe nation is a strong nation.

Immigration the topic that is all the rage, well illegal doesn't mean the same to all, evidently. I see illegal as illegal. I helped manage a strawberry farm and saw many immigrant workers. l Ioved them, cared for them, but knew they were visiting legally. Some illegally came in and had to be sent back. That is how it is. That isn't hate that is protection for us and them. I don't see the President's policies and thoughts on that topic as wrong or thoughtless. I too was married to a man who worked for the Saudi government and learned first hand about the horror of terrorists and how they think. I do not want to worry about my grandchildren's future in the hands of them. I do not want Sharia Law in our country either. This is America and we have our own laws.

Sorry I got long winded. I'm so grateful the President has great advisers and friends such as yourself. I admire you and your daughter greatly and thank you for all you do.

Now that we know the DNC, Hilary and Obama colluded with Russia for a Coup d'├ętat of President Trump then absolutely the charge of treason fits perfectly!
As for lazy a$$es, these so called best and brightest should have been smart enough to figure out how to legally apply for citizenship. Hi Mike,

DJT is the best thing that has happened to this country in my lifetime and I'm 62. His Twitter account is I believe designed to tick off the liberals as much as to unite conservative voters behind common sense policies. As the Democrats freak out, the GOP including some RINOs has reason to unite. Donald is playing both sides and the media too. Absolutely brilliant!

Do you remember hearing young children throwing "I know you are but what am I" back an forth? The Democrats including Hillary, Crying Chuck, Naughty Nancy, and obnoxious Adam Schiff have not outgrown accusing their enemies of doing what they themselves have been engaging in. Their charges of wrongdoing by Trump and the GOP are actually an admission of guilt by Democrats, it's clear where investigations and prosecutions must be focused.

By the way Sarah is doing a wonderful job!

Governor, I agree with you 100%. The current platform if the Democratic Party seems to be "We will oppose anything that President Trump days or dies to wants to do, period!" No matter if what the President feels is good for the country, keeps the USA moving forward, brings God back before us, or keeps us safe. What a bunch of lunatics! Over a year and they still cannot get over the fact they lost the 2016 Presidential election because middle America was tired of 8 years of forced socialism. I pray we begin voting out all the Senators and Congressmen who have been in office for 10 years or more. Clear the damn swamp!

Thank you Mike, for your level-headed and unbiased approach to the stories you write about.
I always find that you have a good common sense approach to calming down the outrage and rhetoric coming from the left without starting a right outrage. thanks
