A new "scandal"
Stop the presses! Major new Trump scandal on the horizon! The New York Times somehow (they claim legally) obtained some of Trump’s business tax forms from 1985 to 1994, showing that his real estate empire claimed more than $1 billion in losses during that time and didn’t pay taxes in most of those years.
Trump branded the story “a highly inaccurate Fake News hit job.” That was a turbulent era for real estate, and Trump said it was a common practice, and was mostly from taking depreciation. He tweeted, “You always wanted to show losses for tax purposes," and "almost all real estate developers" used this as a "tax shelter."
The Times may actually have helped bolster Trump’s case for not giving his tax forms to Congress. I seriously doubt most Americans would expect anyone not to use the tax laws to pay as little as possible, especially when his business is going through a rough patch. Meanwhile, if the New York Times can’t even find tax attorneys who can make clear to readers that people take the biggest tax deductions legally allowable, how can we possibly expect the current crop of IQ point-challenged Democratic Congress members (you know, the same people who wrote the tax laws that they're railing about Trump taking advantage of) to make heads or tails out of Trump’s tax forms that are probably thicker than “War and Peace”?
Also just in: Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal, the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee who’s demanding six years’ worth of Trump’s tax forms, hasn’t released his own tax forms.
I try hard to look for the good in people, but some people make it awfully hard to find. Like the candidate for Jerk of the Year who was spotlighted here yesterday: Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims, the radical leftist, pro-abortion Democrat who posted video of himself bullying, harassing and trying to dox an elderly woman who was praying quietly outside a Planned Parenthood clinic. It was so bad, even pro-choice commenters condemned him.
Well, believe it or not, I may have actually found something good that’s come out of Sims’ proudly rotten behavior. He live-streamed himself pulling the same stunt on three teenage girls who were protesting politely and legally outside a Planned Parenthood clinic, and even demonstrated his own racism by saying, “Look, a bunch of white people, standing out front a Planned Parenthood and shaming people.” He ignored one of the girls (and reality) who replied, “I’m pretty far from white.”
So what good could possibly have come from this? Sims’ words, actions and attitude were all so offensive and obnoxious that he’s inspired a major backlash from the pro-choice community. He sneeringly challenged pro-life activists to “bring it,” and they’re bringing it, big-time. What was once planned as a small, quiet protest at the clinic at 11 a.m. Friday will now include a number of pro-life organizations and major leaders of the movement such as Lila Rose and Abby Johnson of “Unplanned” fame.
Matt Walsh, who helped organize it, said they invite Sims to attend and bring his camera to this one. He added, “The lesson to be learned here is that you will not intimidate pro-lifers. We will not go away and be silent. If you harass or bully one of us, more will come…The rally at the Planned Parenthood in Philly isn’t just about the one jerk harassing pro-lifers at that location. It’s about taking a stand against anyone who tries to intimidate those who exercise their First Amendment rights…And it’s about standing for life, most importantly.”
All very important points to make. And if the size of that rally and the words spoken there change any hearts or minds – if they convince just one clinic patient to reconsider and reject abortion – that will literally be a life-saving result. And who knows what that child may someday grow up and contribute to humanity? All because one punk politician in Pennsylvania made the world’s biggest jerk out of himself.
The Lord truly works in mysterious ways.
How the Left is killing jobs
This isn’t breaking news, but it’s a lesson that always bears repeating because the left adamantly refuses to learn and just keeps making the same dumb mistake over and over.
Someone sent me a link to one of those time-killer videos that pop up on YouTube, this one listing various reasons why the Red Robin restaurant chain is allegedly struggling. They wanted to call my attention to one reason in particular:
Last January, 18 states imposed hikes in the minimum wage, all loudly championed by Democrats who claimed to “care” about lower wage workers and to want to “help” them. They ignored warnings that you can’t price labor above what the market will bear without negative consequences. With all the certainty born of backgrounds in running their mouths but not running businesses, they insisted that employers should just pay it because “it’s the right thing to do.” So they used the force of government to make “doing the right thing” (as defined by them) mandatory.
I’ve written about how leftists have expressed anger and confusion over the “unexpected” effects of the artificially-inflated minimum wage laws they voted for. For instance, a book store and long-time liberal hangout in San Francisco shut its doors because it could no longer show a profit, and many trendy bistros in places like Seattle started disappearing. Even the bar where Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got her experience for Congress closed down.
Well, this video notes that Red Robin (which, like most restaurants, operates on a narrow profit margin) had to do something to offset the added cost, so they eliminated bus boy positions at all 570 locations. I’m not sure how many lost jobs that adds up to, but it must be in the thousands. The video notes that servers had to take over clearing tables, which not only added to their workloads, but slowed down service, which annoyed customers, which harmed patronage.
So let’s tally up all the ways that this one cherished “progressive” policy “helped” people:
1. It put a heavier work burden on waiters and waitresses.
2. It inconvenienced and angered customers.
3. It drove away customers, which hurt stockholders.
4. It cost thousands of minimum wage workers their jobs.
You’re welcome, America!
Nobody wants people to have to live on a minimum wage. I, and all other Republicans I know, want everyone who works hard to make the maximum wage they possibly can. That’s why we need to do what President Trump is doing: take the government’s boot off of the private sectors’ neck so it can grow, succeed, show a profit, hire more people, and create more jobs than there are workers, so wages rise naturally.
That’s exactly what’s happening now. In April, there were 5.8 million Americans on unemployment and 7.1 million job openings. Businesses that need more workers now have to compete for them with other businesses, so they have to pay more.
The Democratic Presidential candidates’ response to this economy has been to talk it down and complain that it could be better (they’re right: give the House back to the Republicans and just stand back!) But what’s their plan? Imposing a national $15-an-hour minimum wage. Ask a former Red Robin bus boy how well that worked out. Or a current waiter.
Here’s some recommended reading for all 3,537 Democratic Presidential contenders. It’s a primer on why their most cherished economic proposal only makes things worse for the people they claim it helps – and everyone else. You’d think they would’ve learned this in Econ 101 class, but apparently, you can now get a minor in Economics without ever taking Econ 101.
Hooray for Meghan McCain for refusing to accept “Late Night” host and relentless Trump critic Seth Meyers’ attempts to promote the “I’m the victim here” narrative of Rep. Ilham Omar in response to criticism of her anti-Semitic comments. I have to take issue, however, with the home page headline for this story: “Late night TV turns ugly as Meghan McCain slams Meyers for defending alleged anti-Semite Omar.”
I’d say that for the first time since Election night 2016, late night TV turned worth watching.
Kudos as well to Rep. Dan Crenshaw for agreeing to walk into the liberal lioness’ den on “The View,” armed against Joy Behar with nothing but accurate quotes from President Trump.
