New York Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has shown over and over that she has a tenuous grasp on basic facts about economics and government.  That does help explain why she’s a socialist, but be warned:  her cluelessness won’t slow her push for a far-left agenda.  In fact, she’s already moving on that, aggressively.

Her critics call attention to her various slips and misstatements of fact –- welcome to the world of politics  –- and she has responded in part by blaming sexism.  My opinion of Ocasio-Cortez is exactly the same as if she were young, clueless, socialist and male.  (For the hypothetical male, I imagine someone cast in the image printed on those Che Guevara t-shirts that make socialists look so cool.)  The main reason O-C won was that she was young and fresh and idealistic, an image that could have worked just as well for a good-looking latino as it did for a latina.  Oh, how I hate identity politics.

Her latest flub involves a reference to the three branches of government.  Those of us who did not sleep through government class in high school –- make that middle school –- know that the Constitution established three branches:  the executive (headed by the President), the judicial (headed by the Supreme Court), and the legislative (consisting of two elective bodies, the House of Representatives and the Senate).  This is as basic as it gets.  Now that Ocasio-Cortez is actually going to be a part of this, I wonder if she can even find her little square on the organizational chart.

I also wonder if she slept through that little film we all watched about how a bill becomes a law.

Anyway, here’s what she said in an online video to her supporters:  “If we work our butts off to make sure that we take back all three chambers of Congress --- uh, rather, all three chambers of government, the Presidency, the Senate and the House...”

When she was confronted on Twitter about her basic lack of knowledge, she responded:  “Maybe instead of Republicans drooling over every minute of footage of me in slow-mo, waiting to chop up word slips that I correct in real-tomd [sic], they actually step up enough to make the argument they want to make.  That they don’t believe people have a right to health care.”

Okay, let’s talk about health care.  The government-run, single-payer health care plan she supports, dubbed “Medicare For All,” has been determined in a study by George Mason University Mercatus Center to cost $32 trillion over 10 years.  (And these estimates always run low.)  I don’t have an economics degree like Ms. Ocasio-Cortez –- hers is in economics and international relations from Boston University –- but I think this may be so much money that if you laid the dollar bills end to end, they would reach from the Earth to somewhere in a galaxy far, far away.

But on Thursday, during an interview with Jorge Ramos, she said she is “puzzled” as to why people keep asking her how we’re going to pay for socialized medicine:  “People often say, like, how are you going to pay for it, and I find the question so puzzling, because how do you pay for something that’s more affordable?”

“How do you pay for cheaper rent?” she asked.  “You just pay for it.  You’re paying more now!”

Ocasio-Cortez seems to be bit confused.  The study by the Mercatus Center did predict that drug prices would fall under such a system.  On the other hand, vastly higher demand for drugs and for all medical services would drive up costs astronomically.

Money seems to be an abstract concept for her.  Now, here is where having a man comment on her understanding of economics might be viewed –- at least by her –- as sexist, but coming from me, it isn’t.  There’s an old Blondie-Dagwood joke (from before my time, I feel compelled to say) that talks about Blondie’s understanding of how to save household money.  Blondie goes shopping and comes home with a pretty new hat.  Dagwood says, “Blondie!!  We can’t afford that!”  Blondie says, “Sure we can!  This hat was on sale for $5 off, so when I bought it I saved $5.  You’ll be glad to know I bought two more and now we’re $15 ahead.”  Dagwood slaps his forehead and goes off to make a sandwich.

Now, see?  That old wheeze is as sexist as can be, but Ocasio-Cortez is demonstrating just about the same level of knowledge of economics.  “You just pay for it”???

Speaking of “just paying for it,” Ocasio-Cortez is facing a logistical problem in getting an apartment in DC and complains that the system doesn’t favor lower-income people.  She had to leave her restaurant job and doesn’t start getting her congressional salary until January, so she and he partner are “just kind of squirreling away” and hoping they can manage till then.  To get an apartment, which no doubt is fairly pricey in the DC area, she probably has to put up the first and last month’s rent, plus a security deposit, and maybe a pet deposit, and then pay the movers, and after that make a few trips to Target if she needs a few things.

Come on, Alexandria.  You just pay for it.

It’ll be tight for a while, but even socialist legislators manage to put away quite a bit of money while they’re in office.  Bernie Sanders reportedly has three houses.  Ironically, some of the richest people in the world are socialists who donate a lot of their money to activists (like her) who want to spread socialism, which in turn makes the populace (not the leaders) poor.  She’s the face of socialism now, and her supporters don’t even care that she’s ignorant of the current system.  They want to tear down that system anyway.

I should mention that one thing I appreciate about Gov. Huckabee is that, unlike many on both sides of the aisle, he doesn’t nit-pick the opposition for slips of the tongue on the campaign trail.  Having campaigned himself, he knows how easily one can misspeak when exhausted, as when Obama referred to the “57 states,” and he doesn’t want to be unfair in his criticism.  Some of Ocasio-Cortez’s slips may have been that kind of thing, but others clearly indicate that whatever she learned in college, it had much more to do with activism than it did with economics or the constitution.

This latest mistake, for instance.  It wasn’t a tongue-twister delivered live --- it was in a video she posted.  Unless this was a live feed, she could have redone it before posting if she’d known or cared what a huge flub it was.

Again, Ocasio-Cortez plans to act very aggressively to push her socialist agenda.  Unbelievably, this newbie is even going after members of Congress within her own party who aren’t sufficiently left-wing or even the right gender/ethnicity.  As reported by the Huffington Post, she’s calling on people to join Justice Democrats’ #OurTime campaign to help them identify Democratic House incumbents who are “demographically and ideologically out of touch with their districts.”  They don’t have to know much about economics, obviously, but today’s Democrats must be ideologically --- and demographically --- correct.  If she’s going to accuse her critics of being sexist, she might want to try sounding a little less racist.

If Ocassio-Cortez goes shopping at Target and Walmart and saves a lot of money on their low priced items, she will have a rent payment in no time.

Great article of a non so in touch with reality Congress woman.
I've worked in healthcare as a nurse for 40 years. Not sure how free for all healthcare is going to cover salaries for those of us who provide the care! Nothing in this world is free except ones salvation. Somebody pays the tab.

In reply to Mr. Teachout's comment: There is nothing in the Constitution regarding separation of church and state. This idea has been become one of the most misunderstood concepts extant. It was extrapolated from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to a minister who wrote to him concerning government control over which religion would be the national religion. The minister was concerned about that happening because he didn't want the government in this country to do what King Henry VIII did in England, that being, require everyone to worship God his way or else. Most people, up to the time Henry wanted to divorce his wife, were Catholic. But when Henry wanted his divorce, the Pope said, "No. You cannot divorce your wife. Period. " So Henry set up the Church of England and began killing everyone who refused to join this new religion. (That was one of the reasons the Pilgrims left England and came to the New World.) Mr. Jefferson wrote back that that would never happen here...that people were free to worship as they chose to worship. That's why Freedom of religion was one of the Freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. I sincerely wish people would realize this and stop all this nonsense about this issue. Too much damage has been done to our society because of this misconception. So the next time you read about some organization trying to shut down someone they don't like based on this erroneous concept, please reply to them with the truth.

As Laura Ingraham called them, the "Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse"...We are in for a ride... I can't think what people were thinking when they cast votes for these so far out left radicals, who are also immature, and against everything we stand for. It will be interesting to see if, at the end of their terms, voters are happy enough with their representation, to vote them back into office. I just can't imagine it.

Laura, excellent article; but you're too kind to this nitwit. It will be a fun two years watching her flounder her way around DC; but I believe even those New Yorkers who voted for her will tire of her nonsense soon enough and she will be a one-termer (at least here's hoping).

Very good article. I would suggest that Congress begin some level of screening process to insure some basic level of governmental knowledge before one is allowed to run for a Congressional office. The Supreme Court might perform a bit of overkill but O-C is clearly in left field. Just a random thought. Thank you for your observations.

Last night as my husband and I were singing praise and worship songs, the thought came to me that I need to pray for Alexandria. WOW!! I was just not on that track at all. So, we stopped right then and prayed. We prayed that someone would tell her about a God that loves her and gave his only son to forgive her of her sins. That she could know she will go to heaven when she dies. That should would become a force for good in this nation and turn from her socialistic ways. I can't help but think there is someone somewhere in her personal background who is praying for her salvation. If not, then it will be me. If so, then two or three agreeing together will move heaven. I am going to try to gather a group to pray for her. She seems to be able to gather people to her cause. She could be a force for God in our nation.

My wife and I just finished watching the Jim Jones, Jonestown fiasco. I remember that event and at the time couldn't understand the rational of the followers. All liberal leftists should be required to view both segments. It is a documentary of the rise of Jim Jones (who calls himself the god) and his "religion" of utopia. In fact, that is why he executed his followers: to get to a better place than the one in which they found themselves. Cyanide was placed in their "kool aid" which caused them to suffocate a horrible death. The very young had cyanide sprayed in their mouth. Guards stood by the cups of juice watching, making certain each swallowed the liquid. Jones shot himself therefore avoiding the horribleness of the cyanide. Some escaped and told their story. I'm sorry, but I doubt it was Heaven! Utopia just doesn't exist. It is designed to self destruct when those who have money don't have it anymore from paying for those who want (demand) it. We can only pray for our country and be thankful of a sovereign God who ultimately is in control!

It's sad, but it would seem her constituents DID sleep through government and civics classes in high school. Or, maybe there were those that dropped out of school before getting to the grade level where they were taught. Or, perhaps the schools didn't require or maybe even offer those classes. I would certainly hope that the sane democrats in Congress would push back on her attempts at demanding they follow HER and her views. As for them being “demographically and ideologically out of touch with their districts,” perhaps she doesn't understand that THEIR constituents voted them in, knowing their views, and they probably even spend some time in their districts interacting with their voters. THEY would be betraying THEIR voters if they went extreme to the left.

And, as for how we would pay for "free health care" I always remember hilary being asked that during her 2008 run for the Presidency. At one rally, she assured the attendees not to worry, that the tax payers would NOT be footing the bill. THE GOVERNMENT would be paying for this!!! So, alexandria is not the only one who seems to not know where the government gets its money.

I wonder, is she going to pout and maybe demand that landlords in DC should recognize her importance and either extremely lower rates, or maybe allow her to live free until her paychecks start coming in? Guess cost of living in DC will be an eye-opener for her!!

I liked your article. It is the first article I've read that both criticizes her speech and the danger she represents. I am horrified that she graduated top of her class. I hope that is wrong. What do students learn at college? Certainly they don't learn American History or Political Science!

I was recently in an art teacher's room in a local public school and I noticed photos of another of the Left's icons: Frida Kahlo. Next to her on the wall was her "fellow traveler" latino commie artist Diego Rivera. The local school celebrated "Dio de los Muertes" (Day of the Dead) on the same day we celebrated All Souls Day. (God forbid any students would ever erect a shrine to praising God for the deliverance of their departed loved ones from Purgatory as so many did in the graveyards here in SoCal! After all: "Separation of Church and State" is supposed to be in the Constitution, so only Pagan monuments are permitted in the yard of the public school!!) After school, many students proudly erected primitive cardboard "shrines" to their dead relatives and other notables in the center school courtyard. This also permitted the casual viewer to observe the same attractive portrait of Frida Kahlo in a great number of the personal shrines. So when I hear about smiley face Ocasio-Cortez, I bet in 50 years her smiley-face picture will be on those Pagan shrines!! Do you think she will eclipse the pictures of Ché Guevara???

Lord, help us!! O-C is remarkably clueless and I have no idea, other than superficial qualities like looks and youth, why the people in her district elected her!! I'm tempted to say they will get what they deserve, but she is going to be a thorn in many of our sides. This youthful push for idealistic socialism is atrocious...…..what the heck are they teaching in high schools and colleges?!! I know the colleges are mostly left bent and the professors are the products of the late sixties. We older Americans with more perspective need to fight for this country and its foundational principles or America will be lost. It is a constant battle these days....never thought I would see such ideas emerging into the mainstream. I have to think I am more common than not as a citizen. Time to stand and speak out for our country.

This is why I am so worried for our country. This woman is ignorant and completely incompetent. She has no understanding of economics and US government. She is indicative of the socialist democrats trying to take over the USA. The voters of New York must be uneducated fools . If stupidity was a crime she would get the death penalty.

Three facts? I read on the Internet she grad from Boston College. On CNBC (I think) a young CEO was on the financial network saying he is going to pay her rent for as long as necessary (saw this at least a week ago) because, as the youngest member (which is it 23 or 28 - I have seen both) she should be supported. He will get her what she needs and if she needs something more "luxurious" he will discuss it with her. Even Tucker Carlson called her a Democrat a night or two ago. I wish everyone would get their facts correct. At any rate, this woman is a disaster, like Obama, is being deified immediately. I hope others in the House put her in her place . . . No one on FOX mentions the CEO who is paying her rent . . . but I saw it along with the other men on the financial panel who questioned his intentions. She's a devout socialist - so of course expects someone else to pay her rent!
