Democrat slogans

House Democrats expect voters to put them back into power, yet they don’t even have a platform (unless you count “open borders, abolishing immigration enforcement and ‘normalizing’ socialism,” but they don’t want to admit they’re in favor of any of that.)  They do, however, have a slogan.  In fact, they’ve tried multiple slogans.

For a while, they tried saying Trump was “self-dealing,” but I guess they figured insulting their opponent wasn’t a reason to vote for them.  Then they tried “A Better Deal,” which carried echoes of FDR’s “New Deal.”  Unfortunately, voters just experienced eight years of Democratic rule and remember only too well that they got a “Raw Deal.”  So now, they have a new midterm election slogan:  “For the People.”  They say it sums up the party’s position on three core issues: health care costs, infrastructure projects and efforts to expose corruption.

OUR TOP STORY: Comey and Brennan: We have had enough of YOU

I confess, I wasn’t aware that "the People" wanted higher health care costs, tons of spending on infrastructure projects that never got built because of eco-red tape, and cover-ups of corruption in high places, which is exactly what the Democrats have given them.  But I guess “For the People” sounds less clichéd than “For the Children,” and it’s even more vague and meaningless, which can only be a good thing if you’re trying to convince voters to put Democrats back in power when ISIS has been crushed and the economy is booming just 18 months after they were kicked out.

Don’t tell anyone, but I have spies in Washington who tell me that these are some of the slogans the Democrats considered before settling on “For the People”…

"Tired of all the winning yet?  Then vote Democrat!"

"Vote Democrat, because who else will force nuns to pay for abortions?"

"The Democrats: So cool, we don’t need ICE!"

"A Democratic Congress: Because even socialism sounds better with 'Democratic' in front of it!"

And my favorite of the lot...

"Vote for us or we’ll scream at you in restaurants!"

Baffled over liberal stance on school choice

It’s often baffled me why liberals are so adamantly opposed to school choice.  They’re always saying how much they care about “the children,” yet when Republicans try to give children, especially minority children in inferior inner city schools, the chance to improve their lives by attending the same kind of private and church schools that wealthy Democrats’ kids attend, they squeal like stuck pigs and accuse Republicans of wanting to destroy our sacred public school system.

To me, this is crazy.  I believe in public education, but there should be nothing “sacred” about a bureaucratic system.  The focus should always be on the children, not the system.  Dr. Lawrence J. Peter of Peter Principle fame (“In a hierarchy, people tend to rise to their level of incompetence”) observed that as all organizations grow bigger, their goal inevitably shifts from serving the customer to preserving the organization.  For the public education establishment, that means Democrats and teachers’ unions focusing more on preserving the system by increasing funding and protecting entrenched interests than on changing anything major to benefit the students.

If the defenders of the system think it’s perfect the way it is, then why are they so afraid of giving parents a choice?  Maybe because they’re afraid this will happen:

In 2010, Republicans won the North Carolina legislature, and they removed the cap on the number of charter schools and made it easier for poor and special needs kids to attend non-public schools or to homeschool.  So what happened when parents and students were given a choice?  A new study found that nearly 20% of the state’s students are now attending something other than a traditional public school, and that number is rising rapidly.

OUR TOP STORY: Comey and Brennan: We have had enough of YOU

Before liberals start howling that I’m an enemy of public education, let me make clear that I’m not saying that the fleeing of public schools by parents and students is a good thing.  It’s simply an indicator; a symptom of a problem with public schools.  If someone points out that your clients prefer the competition, they’re not attacking you, they’re helping you.

Those who keep blindly defending the public school system would do it a bigger favor if they honestly assessed why parents are rejecting it, and instead of simply calling for throwing more money at it, start backing real reforms that would improve it so that parents and students (and teachers!) want to remain in it.  Maybe start with a return of classroom discipline (no kid pulls that “sassing the teacher” garbage on their homeschooling mom) and an emphasis on subjects such as real history and civics instead of liberal propaganda.  Assure parents that they could send their kids to school in the morning and not have them come home at night claiming to be socialists.

Personally, I’d bring back music classes as well, since playing an instrument has been shown to improve cognitive and social skills, and help students with other subjects, too. It’s also hard for homeschool families to form marching bands -- unless they’re the Duggers.

San Francisco police arrest "Rideshare rapist"

San Francisco Police believe they have arrested the “Rideshare Rapist,” so called because he raped four women over five years while posing as a driver for hire.  The suspect is Orlando Vilchez Lazo, an illegal immigrant from Peru who pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail. ICE wants to deport him, but he might be sentenced to multiple life sentences first.

The case has brought even more criticism of San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” policy that protects illegal immigrants from federal authorities, but officials there insist this has nothing to do that.  Yes, I’m sure the fact that the illegal alien who was allegedly committing multiple rapes chose to live in the city that protects criminal illegal aliens entirely at random.  More details at the link.

Putin has something on Trump?!?

It seemed almost impossible to ramp up the hysteria over Russia even higher, but Democrats and the media (pardon my redundancy) somehow managed it.  The latest nonsense is a seemingly coordinated effort to push a conspiracy theory that Putin must “have something” on President Trump and is blackmailing him.  It’s obvious that Trump must be under Putin’s control, because, as he pointed out Wednesday, he’s killed 200 Russian soldiers in Syria, expelled 60 Russian diplomats and worked overtime to cripple Russia’s oil industry.  He also said he privately confronted Putin about election meddling and “let him know we can’t have this, we’re not going to have it, and that’s the way it’s going to be.”

I’d add that he’s also been saying for years that America should find ways to deal with adversaries on issues that are mutually beneficial, and he’s famous for his style of schmoozing people in person while using the “big stick” outside the door to get them to go along.  He’s done it with everyone from bankers who financed his hotels to Kim Jong-Un.  Did they all “have something on him?”

Somehow, Trump’s critics have made the mental leap from him not being hard enough on Putin for their taste over Russia’s meddling in our elections to a wild international blackmail conspiracy plot that Tom Clancy would find so far-fetched, he’d toss it into the trash can.  And this is how they think they’re convincing voters to put them back in charge of important things?

Meanwhile, Rep. Steve Scalise offered a few reminders of what capitulation to Putin really looks like.  Note to Democrats: Did Putin “have something” on Obama?

California's Supreme Court blocks split of state

California’s Supreme Court has blocked the initiative to split the state three ways from appearing on the November ballot.  The Court sided with a challenger that claimed it would alter the state government too much.  Yeah, I think that was the entire point!  But the challengers say dividing the state would require two-thirds of the legislature to call a constitutional convention, and good luck with that.

The really bad news for Californians: as long as you have those judges, you won’t be able to leave California without actually leaving California.

Democrats vote "present"

How to Troll 101:  Amid calls from the far-left to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, House Republicans brought a resolution to support ICE to the floor and forced Democrats to go on the record as to whether or not they support immigration enforcement.  Democrats denounced the bill as a stunt and tried to make the issue about separating families at the border and “the children,” but it still passed.

For the record – and trust me, you will hear this record quoted from now until Election Day – the vote was 244-to-35 with 133 Democrats ducking the issue by voting “present.”  But in a larger sense, when it comes to defending America from invasion by drug gangs, human traffickers and other criminals, are they really “present” at all?

 Fake

Liberals get so upset when President Trump points out “fake news,” and yet for years, they’ve been gleefully sharing videos from comedy shows like “The Daily Show,” which Jon Stewart freely admitted was fake news.  Their latest hero is Sacha Baron (“Borat”) Cohen, whose new Showtime show seemingly consists of nothing but him putting on disguises (including posing as a decorated, disabled veteran, which FYI, is illegal) and tricking mostly conservatives into saying or reading dumb statements on camera (allegedly – the tapes are obviously heavily edited, so who knows what they actually said?)

Luckily, he’s been pulling this schtick for so long that not only are viewers and critics tired of it, but his would-be victims are also getting wise.  Cohen entered a gun store in disguise, obviously intending to make gun sellers and buyers look bad.  Problem for him: not only are gun store owners on the lookout for people who are trying to disguise their identities, but this one immediately recognized him as that “Borat” guy in a ridiculous get-up.  He called Cohen out, and he quickly fled, leaving the gun store owner to read the riot act to his camera crew who had lied to him, telling him they were just filming a story about how an immigrant purchases a gun in the US.

The store owner said, “He was fake, the producers were fake, the show was fake, and Showtime is fake to be honest with you. They want a real story, come talk to us. We’ll give you a real story.”

Of course, if they want to see the real story, they could just click on this link, because it was all caught on (unedited) surveillance video.  But when it comes to guns in America, liberals don’t want the unvarnished truth. “They can’t handle the truth!”  They’d rather keep watching carefully-edited fake news that comfortingly assures them that everyone who disagrees with them is just stupid.

 Correction

Unlike much of the mainstream media, when I make a factual error, I correct it immediately.  Yesterday, I wrote about how the entire anti-plastic straw hysteria was based on an unverified phone survey done by a 9-year-old child, and added, “In his defense, he’s now 10.”  Correction:  Turns out he’s now 16.

Wow, it feels good to get a story 100% correct!  CNN should try it sometime!

Baseball

In the midst of all this partisan venom, we could really us an Inspiring story to remind us of the greatness of America, and here’s one:

Baseball fans wondered why the Minnesota Twins sent in pitcher Fernando Rodney to shut out Tampa Bay in the fifth inning, then let him leave.  He hadn’t gone in that early in a game in over a decade.  It’s because he had something even more important to attend to.

Rodney came to America from the Dominican Republic as a teenager and played for nine different teams as he rose to Major League stardom.  He traveled across America, saw its greatness close-up, and started the long process of becoming a legal immigrant.  The team let him duck out of Sunday’s game early so he could catch a flight to Miami and be sworn in.  Rodney said, “After 19 years in this wonderful country today I am blessed to say that I am an official US Citizen.”  He adds that while he holds the Dominican flag in his heart, "today, I hold the American flag."

Thank you for my twice daily dose of sanity--plus your fb posts.

Congratulations to Fernando Rodney !!! And to the Twins organization to allow him to not only play that day, but to make sure he was also able to make it to a most monumental event in his life.

I remember one of the things obama did "for the people"--for black kids was to block poorer kids from getting to go to the school their parents chose. Meanwhile, of course, sending his children to a prestigious private school. One which wasn't under the thumb of things like what was allowed for school lunches, as dictated by michelle obama. Of course, that school most likely had the funds to provide high-end lunches for the students...no corn dogs or hamburgers, etc. As for school choice, I remember a time when government (probably teacher union-led?) made it difficult to home school. Then, there was a lull in the anti-homeschool actions. Now, we see again where homeschooling is being harassed. We have homeschooled kids in our area. They are socially adjusted by playing with public school kids in their neighborhood, joining youth organizations like 4H and the Rec and the YMCA. Acting in plays and musicals with all sorts of kids. Oh, and having high scores on testing required, and attending colleges, and becoming successful in their chosen careers. Home schooling where the emphasis is on reading, writing, arithmetic, history, geography, civics, economics, etc. Oh, and learning real life skills by perhaps meal planning, budgeting, shopping, etc where their other skills like math, etc are also used.

Your news is always a good read. Thank you. As for California spitting into 3 states, it was a bad plan to begin with. In Northern California they saddled us with San Francisco. No Bueno! Combine LA an San Francisco together and keep their lunacy away from the Rural areas. I support the State of Jefferson for Northern California, not hearing much about that, but it would be nice to tie the rural areas together and give those big cities back to those who choose to live in them, they are clueless to country life.

    Dear Governor Huckabee,

Regarding President Trump's nomination of Judge Bret Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, I wrote this and sent it to all my contacts which number over 100.

As usual I've been doing a significant amount of research on prominent issues of the day. President Trump nominated Judge Bret Kavanaugh as a candidate for the Supreme Court of the United States. The Left-wing Liberals have attacked this appointment saying that he [Judge Kavanaugh] would overturn the Roe v Wade abortion law, and other scurrilous/false accusations.

    Here's the fact:

No single Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States can overturn any existing law. And the Supreme Court of the United States cannot overturn an existing law unless:

An individual or group submits and argues a case against an existing law, like Roe v Wade, before the Court. However, to get their case before the Supreme Court they must submit their objections and arguments to lower courts first. Then, if the lower courts rule in their favor the case must be presented to a litany of other courts until one or more of the lower courts approve their request to present their case to the Supreme Court. And then the Supreme Court must agree to hear their case.

But, the Supreme Court of the United States cannot overturn an existing law unless someone or some group, having gone through the litany described above finally is allowed to present their case and arguments to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of the United States cannot 'cherry pick' a law or laws they don't agree with on their own volition. And the Supreme Court of the United States must agree to hear a case. So Roe v Wade will remain the law of the land until someone or some group that objects to the law makes it to the Supreme Court, and that's highly unlikely, in my opinion.

So what the system requires can take a long, long time before it goes to the Supreme Court. And to repeat a critical point, the Supreme Court doesn't have to agree to hear any case!

    Best Regards,

    George Phelps

Good morning. I have just a few comments today.
This hysteria about President Trump meeting with Putin is so hypocritical that it makes me sick. Does no one remember the reset button? Did no one see/hear the open mike comment from Obama about having more leeway after the election? Don't the Democrats realize we have tapes of everything they said before Mr Trump was elected? Why is it Mr Trump was not a racist until he ran for the Presidency?

Also, in my circle of friends, the Democratic Party is no longer considered a party of the American people. The Democrats worry more about illegal immigrants than the Americans. We are OVER it!! Done.

Btw, I would love to hear your "take" on the Whoopie and Judge Jeanine "interview." I've heard Whoopie lost her cool. She should retire.

Keep up the good work. I hate to comment every day but I LOVE reading your commentary daily.......

I loved the story about Fernando Rodney. It's wonderful to hear about immigrants who come to our country the right and legal way. We welcome those new citizens with open arms. And thank you for correcting the story about the young man and the plastic straws. So good to have someone who tells the truth for a change. LOL

FYI, John Morgan JD, a well known attorney in Orlando, Florida, has been using the slogan "For the people" as part of his very extensive ad campaign for many, many years. Additionally Mr Morgan is a Democrat and hosted an Obama fundraiser at his home in Lake Mary, FL., a suburb of Orlando. Mr Morgan's law offices penetrate many markets and I have even seen his billboards as far away as Tennessee stressing his claims that they are "For the People". The Democrats merely stole that slogan from him.
