President Trump is getting brickbats from all sides for his press conference with Vladimir Putin for not strongly confronting Putin over Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US election.  Trump said he did confront Putin privately and at length, and Putin confirmed that.  But Putin denied attempting to interfere in the US election. Trump also is under fire for saying that Putin made an “incredible offer “to have the people working on the case come and work with (Russia’s) investigators with respect to the 12 people” indicted by Robert Mueller.  Trump also said he wants to know why the FBI didn’t get to examine the hacked DNC server these indictments are based on.

RELATED:  Should President Trump have met with Vladimir Putin?

Trump is getting excoriated for being soft on Russia and criticizing American intelligence agencies, both by fellow Republicans and by Democrats who spent decades mocking anyone who criticized Russia as a Cold War troglodyte. They also used to hail Obama for his “smart diplomacy” in going around the world criticizing and apologizing for America.

Former Obama CIA Director John Brennan has made a reputation for ridiculous tweets, but even he outdid himself by ranting that Trump’s press conference was a “treasonous” offense.  This is a man who seemingly was unperturbed by a President giving a sweetheart nuclear deal and a planeload of cash to a country whose parliament was chanting, “Death to America” on a daily basis.  The fact that he was actually the head of the CIA sends a bigger chill through me than anything said at Monday’s press conference.

One reporter even set a new world “Dumb Question” record for actually asking Putin if Russia had gathered compromising information on Trump during a visit to Moscow several years ago.  Putin denied that, saying he wasn’t even aware that Trump was in Moscow at the time.  He also told Chris Wallace of Fox News that back then, Trump was just one of hundreds of business men who visited Russia; he built hotels and ran beauty pageants, and nobody imagined he’d become President or cared that he was there.  But what did the reporter in Helsinki expect Putin’s answer to be?  “Dah!  Did you not hear about the icky videos in the Russian Dossier Hillary paid for?”  He’s the former head of the KGB, not a moron.

As for the political and media outrage that Trump praised Putin and didn't attack him to his face, recall that every recent President has started out thinking he could deal with Putin before learning better, and nobody screamed that it was “TREASON!” George W. Bush looked into his eyes and read his soul.  Obama kept the blinders on for years, offering Putin “more flexibility” after his reelection, basically turning Syria and Ukraine over to him, and mocking Mitt Romney for living in the ‘80s for warning that Russia was the biggest foreign policy challenge (and the same reporters who are now attacking Trump for his naivety toward Putin gleefully joined in the mockery of Mitt.)  I also suspect that the way this issue dominated the media coverage, at a time where there are so many major issues for the US and Russia to address, was a sign of just how successful the timing of the announcement of those indictments was.

Would I prefer that Trump have taken a harder line in confronting Putin?  Sure, and I hope he issues a strong clarification and condemnation.  But this is his style.  We saw it with Kim Jong-Un: he approaches these tyrants with ego-stroking and an open hand in person while maintaining steely opposition elsewhere, through sanctions, military build-ups and other means.  It’s part of his deal-making strategy: make it very difficult to oppose him and publicly rewarding to compromise.  You can agree or disagree with the style, but he’s the President and that’s his call.

Frankly, I think it’s better than bowing and capitulation.  At least Trump always makes it clear that he’s giving foreign rivals the chance to change and cooperate, but if they don’t, the option of force remains on the table.  Obama spent eight years dealing with despots like Putin, and left office bowing just as deeply to them as he did when he first came in.

I agree! You very well sum it up! I found myself astounded by Chris Wallace! Thinking, who does he think he IS? Trying to undermine our POTUS' foreign policies with other leaders? I don't think they "press" should be allowed to confront foreign leaders like this! What if THEY set off adverse reactions to their biased agendas that do not reflect what the majority of Americans think? HE could have destroyed any diplomatic relations!! Other countries do not have the same "liberal freedoms."

Yes I do agree that President Trump made the right decision meeting with Putin. To see him face to face to talk with him. As did Bush as did Obama. My advise to President Trump: Be wise, prayerful, ask God for wisdom and insight regarding Putin. Do not trust him.

Dems are crazy. Why would Pres Trump trust our Intel agencies, they have been trying to get him since the campaign and they still are. Look what's going on with the FBI. There are testifying right now. I have never seen such childish hatred for anyone. I don't think anyone should trust any of our Intel agencies. They are still covering for the Obama administration. People are crazy if they trust any of them. They have been after Trump since they won the election. They can't get any of them to release any documents that have legally been requested.

Had President Trump come out like a tyrant, the media would have accused him of starting WWIII, and I believe the issue was addressed adequately between these two world leaders, despite what the media, the left, the RINOs, and the bad apples in the intelligence agencies would like to have people believe. All of those people were demanding President Trump cancel his meeting just days before after they "miraculously" fingered 12 Russians for messing with the election, sort of... I'm still wondering how they found this because I thought they didn't have access to the servers. Then suddenly it's all over the internet, the same questioning.
I believe God has his hand firmly on our President. While no person is flawless, God is in control. I did not feel the same way many did, I simply understood by what was said, things were addressed. That is enough. God is watching.
Mr Huckabee, President Trump has been harassed, torn down, and shredded by countless media, people, groups, entities on a daily basis since before he won the Presidency, as has his family, and even your family, since Sarah (whom I love & cheer for ) works for him. If he felt that the way to handle this issue was less severely than the rest of the haters demanded, then I stand behind, beside and in front of him 100% knowing he did what he felt was correct. The man loves this country, and every single man and woman in it, and he's working for free. To question his loyalty is just wrong.

    Hi, Mike

If Trump had gone in shooting both barrels, Putin would have clammed up and there would be no room for rational dialogue now or in the future. I don’t feel Trump acted like a pushover or the Putin believes Trump is a pushover. If Trump needs to push back on Putin in the future, he can. But, meanwhile, Trump aimed to start with a baseline where discussions are possible. Even though Trump has a big ego, he has the ability to think outside of himself and try to understand where someone else is coming from. That clearly is not what Pelosi, Maxine, Schumer and other unhinged liberals are able to do.

Not sure why President Trump backtracked today, but guess he was trying to diffuse the shit storm from idiots. If they are bent out of shape because President Trump did not push harder at Putin for meddling, then it's only local that reasonable people should be bent out of shape that our intelligence agencies didn't push harder against the Democrats meddling in our own elections.

    Clean the Swamp!!

Love your newsletters and your wonderful daughter!

What our President and President Putin did I feel is awesome. I feel that with the Presidents of 2 very powerful countries working together to bring down the corruption is exactly what we need to happen.

If ppl would just put their hatred aside and really think about everything that is being said and done they would see what is really going on. Come On ppl.. use your brain. Why are the Dems so against Our President?? What are they afraid of here?? They have been slow walking/Stone walling/ Obstructing every single thing that he's doing and congress is attempting to do. What are they hiding?

Did anyone bother to hear what Putin said about Browder and the $400Million that was taken out of Russia and ended up in Hilary's campaign? Does anyone even care to remember Obama's hot mic comment about more flexibility after the election? Doesn't anyone remember how chummy chummy Obama and Hillary both were to Russia??

Let's stop being a bunch of Hypocrites and be open and honest. I'm not saying you need to get up on the rooftop and screw #Awake or #WalkAway but it would be nice if nothing else you open your eyes and be honest with yourself.

Don't forget our President made it clear that this meeting was to try and make for a better relationship with Putin, He specifically said that he had low expectations. How would him insulting or blasting Putin in public accomplish anything. If you watched Wallace interview with Putin, even Putin said the same thing, why would they travel so far to meet if only to insult each other. That was not what this meeting was suppose to be about but the Dems and RINO'S wanted to see aggression and insults and why?? I'll tell you why, if Trump had embarrassed Putin in that briefing conference that would have been the end before their was a beginning and the only ones that would have won would have been the Dems and the rogue Russians that the Dems have been paying to help them for DECADES.

Do I believe the Russians meddled in our elections?? Sure I do! I also believe that others have meddled as well and I also believe Obama and Hillary meddled in them as well. When President Trump said there is blame on both sides, he's right. The Americans and Russians have been colluding for DECADES and that is a known fact.

I like what Rand Paul said ,and he has more sense than most. Most of these who are critical of Trump are just being their usual stupid selves.
The president has a tough job, and we who are Christians are to pray for him, and ignore the critics.

It seems everyone knows best what should be done. The fact is it is not our job to negotiate with foreign leaders. That is the current President's job. Everyone needs to stop the yammering at the President and help him succeed. How could anyone expect leaders that control 91% of the worlds nuclear weapons to stand in front of the world and condemn each other, than follow that with successful negotiations?

Right on target! Why on earth would this President want to say he trusts the cia/fbi/state dept?? Then his supporters would think he's an idiot! Our intelligence agencies have had a knife at his throat since he mentioned running! I hope he has stood back allowing the attack knowing he will pull the rug from under them with a blockbuster deal. Then smile.

I am disgusted that conveniently the DOJ bookended the Helsinky Summit with Russian indictments of low level charges upstaging our President's diplomacy with the most powerful military enemy in the world. Does the deep state want war?

President Trump is an expert in "handling" people, and he knows that humiliating people in public will only cause them to shut down. He deals with heads of state, not the local Starbucks baristas. Those VIPs are extremely protective of their egos, and their image on the world stage. An expert in negotiations, President Trump also knows that the surest way to get someone on your side is to acknowledge them.

I am absolutely disgusted by the way the media is acting today and yesterday on the Russian summit. It is nothing but mass hysteria. Who even trusts the U.S. intelligence agencies anymore when they are infiltrated with deep state corruption. And now Trump is forced to defend these same corrupt intelligence agencies or media will lose their minds even more.

Mexico is meddling with our elections more than Russia. Why is Trump the bad guy for wanting to get along with Putin when other countries are bent on destruction and oppressing their people? This whole story is nothing but propaganda and hysteria.

No reports on the riots in France. They don't even give the news anymore. Main stream media is nothing but leftist and RINO opinion. Even FOX has joined CNN and MSNBC with the same hysteria. I am shutting off the TV. There is no news on TV. This huge out-of-proportion deal about Trump's comments is nothing but fake news and hysteria that is just confusing people and causing people to be angry.

Why does the media ask such outrageous questions anyway. How did they really expect President Trump or Putin to publicly answer such questions? The questions were crafted to cause this contraversy. Really, they would have denounced Trump no matter what he said. If he had taken the hard line, they would have accused him of trying to start a war...

Thought for the day July 17, 2018

It seems like, every body thinks Putin wanted Trump to win.
    Except me.
    Common sense tells me different.
    Follow me on this.
The Crimean peninsula was annexed from Ukraine by the
    Russian Federation in February–March 2014.
Putin showed signs recreating the original USSR.

Obama whispered a message for Putin before his reelection in 2012
"Tell Putin after the election I'll have more flexibility" (on a hot mike)
Hillary helped Russia set up "Silicon Valley" just outside of Moscow,
and $millions went into the Clinton foundation.
Hillary approved selling 20% of our uranium reserves to Russia.
What a friend, and more millions to the Foundation.
Slick Willie gave a speech in Moscow. Was paid $500,000.
How can you reconcile Putin wanting Trump to win,
when he had pastys, Hillary and Obama, in his pocket?
The famous DOSSIER, originated in Russia, and paid for by the DNC,
was calculated to guarantee Hillary's election.
Despite what you may 'think' you saw and what you will hear from
Trump haters about his meeting with Putin--------
    Remember 'Rocket man'?
Many may be eating crow, not cake.

    Sic 'em Donald!!!

    Hello Govenor Huckabee!
As one of your former constituents I have always respected you and never taken your words lightly.

I agree full-heartedly with what you've said. I can't understand all the theatrics as this IS the man. He has remained the same. This is how he works and I for one am glad because it's most effective. The media made the question and answer part of the summit a 3-ringed circus not President Trump.

Congress and Senate should keep their mouths shut and support this president. Every single time they have criticized they have ended up with egg on their face or eating crow. They still have not learned.

I want my President to succeed because when he succeeds we ALL succeed and they certainly need to give him credit for the good things he's done and accomplished that we Americans are now benefiting from. I am proud to say I voted for President Trump and I will vote for those who GENUINELY back him up.

Thank you Sir for being a voice of reason in a sea of idiots.

All News, even Fake News has always reported that the Intelligence Agencies were against Donald Trump being elected President from before he was president. That being the case, is there any good reason that President Trump should trust them? Would anyone trust anyone who has been always against them? None of the readers here would trust those like that, would they. For Putin, it is far different. He was in charge of his once -so can trust his. Now President Trump was supposed to trust those always against him. This does not make sense.

I have a feeling we’ll have answers soon. I don’t know if it’s just my feeling, but President Trump looked tired at the press conference after his two hours with Putin. It seems he didn’t project what he wanted to, which Leads me to believe he’s holding back info until he gets more answers. My feeling is that he’s still in the planning stages, from something that was discussed behind closed doors.

Why does everyone think Pres Trump should be like all past presidents? He wasn't elected to be what a lot of people think the pattern for a president is! ALL presidents since Reagan have failed miserably with Russia. We do NOT want more of the same! The president has a strategy and the non-Trumpers are always a mile behind! Sit back and watch as he executes his plan. All of these Trump haters will have egg on their faces! At some time, I think not in the too far future, President will un-classify all of the documents that FBI and DOJ are hiding. Many things will be revealed. If I were in his shoes, I would not take the intelligence community at their word! Even though Trump's people are NOW in leadership at these agencies, a LOT of worker-bees are Obama holdovers who clearly hate our president. Can't wait for President to allow the curtain to be opened, and all of these people will be exposed!
