A new poll on free speech and tolerance by the Cato Institute confirmed what has long been obvious: political correctness is strangling free speech. The poll found that 71% of Americans believe that intolerant PC “tolerance” enforcers have silenced important discussions that our society needs to have.
The survey revealed a lot of contradiction in people’s beliefs about the First Amendment. For instance, 51% of staunch liberals think it’s “morally acceptable” to punch Nazis; 51% of Democrats think there should be laws forcing Americans to use transgender people’s preferred pronouns; and on the other side, 53% of Republicans think that people who burn the flag should be stripped of their American citizenship.
Overall, 58% of Americans said they don’t feel that they can safely express their own political beliefs anymore. Interestingly, 53% of Democrats don’t feel the need to self-censor, but 75% of Republicans and 58% of Independents do. That should give you a clue as to where the real censors now lurk.
The good news: two-thirds of Americans think colleges aren’t doing enough to teach students about free speech, and the same number think colleges should expose students to all kinds of views, even those they find offensive. The bad news: One-third of Americans don’t believe that.
