I won’t comment in detail on the Kavanaugh hearings today because as of this writing, they’re still going on.  Just to make a few early observations:

Both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh presented emotional testimony that their supporters will find believable.  But only Kavanaugh presented any actual evidence. Dr. Ford’s testimony was moving, and it made it easier to believe that something happened to her that affected her deeply and that she may be sincere.  But her testimony actually raised more questions than it answered.

For instance, she claimed that she was too afraid to fly to come to DC, but her testimony revealed that she flies often.  She claimed she didn't know that the Committee offered to send someone to her, but everyone knew that (I wrote about it here.) She dismissed her female friend’s sworn denial that she was present at this alleged attack by saying she has “health problems,” whatever that means.  Even if she did panic and flee without warning her girlfriend of the danger, that doesn’t explain why her friend wouldn’t remember now or notice then that her girlfriend suddenly disappeared from a party with only five attendees when she was seven miles from home and couldn’t drive, or why she didn’t call Ford’s parents to make sure she was okay.  Only the decision to handle her with kid gloves prevented questioners from drilling down on these logical inconsistencies.

Kavanaugh, on the other hand, was also emotional, something some liberal commenters tried to turn against him as showing he didn’t have the “temperament” to be on the Supreme Court.  If he is falsely accused, as he says, then it takes some major gall to use the fact that he’s upset that you have tried to destroy his life, reputation and career as your new reason to oppose him.  But Kavanaugh also offered something Dr. Ford didn’t: not only sworn denials from the witnesses his accuser cited, but a hand-written 1982 calendar/diary showing that he was at other places on every date that this could have happened. I understand why he choked up thinking about his father starting that tradition, but he must also be incredibly grateful that it was passed down to him. I bet it’s something the Committee Democrats never imagined he would be able to produce.

Kavanaugh’s worst moment was probably when he struggled to answer Dick Durbin’s pressing him to demand an FBI investigation of himself.  It was a disingenuous attack, but effective.  Kavanaugh (who has already been through six high-level FBI background checks) tried to explain why, with no evidence or details of the allegation, all the FBI could do is interview the same witnesses who were sitting there testifying now. Plus, as Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho later noted, the Committee already conducted an investigation to interview all the people the FBI would, and Democrats refused to participate.  Kavanaugh's response might have come across to some viewers as too lawyerly or evasive, but it was accurate.  And he probably didn’t want to say what he knew to be true: Democrats aren’t pushing for an FBI investigation to learn anything.  They want it as a political delaying tactic to get past the midterm elections.  If you don’t believe me, here’s a Democrat explaining the uselessness of an FBI investigation in these situations:

Commentary continues below advertisement

Graham will be remembered

Two moments that will definitely be remembered:  the normally congenial Lindsay Graham finally losing his cool at the Democrats’ sleazy character assassination tactics (one all-time Senate low point being grilling Kavanaugh about a flatulence joke from his high school yearbook) and letting them have it with both barrels:

The other was a much welcome example of grace and decency in the midst of the slimiest episode I can remember seeing in Washington possibly ever: when Kavanaugh said he bore no ill toward Dr. Ford and her family and was incredibly proud of his daughter Liza for suggesting that they pray for her.  He said, “That’s a lot of wisdom for a 10-year-old.”

It’s certainly a lot more wisdom than I’ve seen on display in the Senate recently.

Add Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to the “step down for violating your oath of office to protect the Constitution” list.

President Trump's press conference

Believe it or not, there were other things in the news yesterday besides wild, out-of-left-field sexual accusations against Brett Kavanaugh.  For instance, President Trump held a remarkable press conference in which, for 83 minutes, he took questions, poked fun at the media, and shot from the hip with blunt, no-holds-barred responses on everything from China to Canada to Syria to, yes, the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Naturally, the media went into full TDS meltdown mode afterward, hand-wringing that Trump’s comments were “outrageous,” “narcissistic” and “unhinged.”  They forgot to include “honest,” “refreshing” and “wildly entertaining.”  Also pretty darn remarkable for a man who allegedly is suffering dementia and can barely string two sentences together in meetings, according to at least one recent “insider” tell-all book.

Incidentally, look out for the cameo by CNN’s Jim Acosta attempting to play a journalist and lecture the President of the United States on how to conduct a press conference.  Polish up that Razzie Award for Worst Performance of 2018!  Here’s a direct link if you’re in a hurry.

Time to step aside folks

As I’ve watched the attacks on Judge Brett Kavanaugh move from their initial Salem Witch Trial interrogation phase into the full blown mass hysteria of a growing chorus of accusers screaming, “I saw goody Kavanaugh with the Devil!" (and Democrats insisting that the sheer numbers of people screaming hysterically make the story more likely to be true), one thing has become crystal clear:

It is time for someone to step aside from high office in DC.  And I’m not talking about Kavanaugh.  I am calling upon the following people to immediately “step aside” from their positions in the United States Senate:

Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who declared that a “sworn allegation” was solid enough evidence to force Kavanaugh to withdraw; Chris Coons (D-DE), who said that Kavanaugh “bears the burden of disproving these allegations;” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), who managed to come out against both due process and free speech rights at once by saying that all men should just “shut up” when a woman makes a sexual assault allegation; Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and the list may yet grow longer.

Note that I’m being incredibly lenient by not including Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Kamala Harris (D-CA) or Cory Booker (D-NJ), despite their outrageous, reprehensible and self-serving behavior during this period, only because, to my knowledge, they have not yet explicitly called for overthrowing due process rights and declaring Kavanaugh guilty on allegations alone unless he proves himself innocent.

Also please note: I am not calling on these Senators to resign for partisan reasons (I’d say the same to any Republican who similarly treated the Bill of Rights like a roll of Charmin); nor because I think that they are acting as vicious, unfair partisans without regard for the terrible damage they are doing to the social fabric of America, although that’s all true.  I’m calling upon them to resign because they have all publicly, blatantly and willfully violated their oaths of office.

This is the oath that all Americans take upon assuming the high responsibility of being a US Senator:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Each and every one of the people I named above has now come out publicly against the sacred rights of due process, enumerated in the Bill of Rights (part of the Constitution.)  Although the presumption of innocence isn’t explicitly spelled out in the Constitution, it dates back to ancient Rome; it’s a bedrock of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; it’s generally held to be an implied right by the 5th, 6th and 14th Amendments; and it was established as precedent in the case of “Coffin v. US” (1895.)

It is up to Judge Kavanaugh to decide whether dealing with this tsunami of slander is worth it or to step aside from consideration for the position of Supreme Court Justice.  But there is absolutely no question that the people I named above have violated their oath of office by misusing the power, publicity and prestige that comes with it to advocate for the shredding of basic civil rights enshrined in the very Constitution that they swore to “support and defend” as a condition of taking office.  Through their words and deeds, they have proven themselves unworthy to hold that office.

Therefore, I call upon them all to resign from the United States Senate.  Right now, before they do any more damage.

Or in their own parlance:  Do the right thing and step aside.

HHS cancels contract

This story happened Monday and got buried, but it’s too important to be overlooked: the Department of Health and Human Services has canceled a contract with Advanced Biomedical Resources to provide fetal body tissues for medical experiments.  In a statement, the HHS said, “HHS was not sufficiently assured that the contract included the appropriate protections applicable to fetal tissue research or met all other procurement requirements. As a result, that contract has been terminated.”

As a reminder, this is the company that was implicated in the undercover expose videos of Planned Parenthood workers allegedly discussing how much money they charged for selling various body parts of aborted children.  PP denied the allegation and tried to suppress the videos, but apparently, the HHS wasn’t convinced.

There’s much more detail at the link, along with a comment from the group behind the PP undercover videos noting that this is just a “small first step” in ending the trafficking of body parts of aborted children for taxpayer-funded medical experiments.  True, but a small first step is more than the victims of Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills ever get to take.

Hi Mike, just love reading what you write, I trust you so much. I don't trust many journalists or sources now days. I treasure your opinion, have great respect for you, and read everything you right, or at least what I see. I was so disappointed to see how the Democrats handled this fiasco. I will never ever vote for a democrat again as long as I live. Sorry you didn't become president. I would have voted for you. I love all the accomplishments of this administration, it is too bad the left will give them no credit for the wonderful things that have taken place. God Bless.

Hi Mike I totally agree with you analogy of the which hunt. Living in Salem MA my whole life has given me a unique perspective of how a which hunt starts and the chief conspirator Elizabeth Warren has shown she knows how to fuel such mass hysteria. I never thought I would see such horrible tactics by politicians this is pure calculated evil at its lowest. Thank you for speaking up and raising such a strong daughter to help president Trump . Would love to hear you with Jeff Kuhner sometime so please call into his show. If you ever need a strong Massachusetts alliance please contact any time.

Thank you, Gov. Huckabee for your excellent commentaries!! Always spoke or written with clarity, truth & a little humor!! ?? I also enjoy your show. I was very upset with Senator Flake today!! I will pray for Judge Kavanaugh to persevere. Also, I have been praying for Dr Ford & the Democrats, following the advice of a smart 10 yr old little girl! ??

Very sad and heartsick about the hearings this week. Dems always seem to outsmart now we are delaying another week and supposedly asking FBI to investigate accusations that lack specificity and corroboration knowing that not a single Democrat will change his vote because their minds were made up before the pro was began

Our conservative friends and myself are getting more and more frustrated over the events yesterday. We don't even recognize America anymore. I used to comment on these events - giving support to Republicans and especially the President, Fox News - usually on Twitter. Since many of us - as I seem to lament every time I write - can no longer express our dissatisfaction of the Dems/liberal Un-American attitudes, it has no where to go - it is frustrating. Can't GOP initiate a website whereby we can support our president et al - does he think we all disappeared or his polls seem to be affected? How can we speak up when the media and internet giants don't allow us to give our opinion? Please recognize the need for supporters - especially with the midterm elections coming up - to be able to counter terrible remarks the media news, comedians and stations throw out at us - and we can't write back or give the opposite opinions to their awful ones - we are being subdued, oppressed and discriminated against while they say whatever they want and it's all mean and lies -- what's next - armbands?

I am not sure if this comment got through but it might have been interesting to ask Ford why she was using the bathroom upstairs. Most houses have a bathroom on the main floor. Republicans were way to easy on her about drilling down on her inconsistencies. I liked your comment about the democrats were not interested in truth but 100% in favor of stopping the Kavanaugh confirmation. Certainly it was a ruse to continually call for a FBI investigation!

I live in a predominantly democratic state. We have some of the most loony-toon congregational people. For many year I was a registered dem but left the party when Obama became president. What is happening now in politics is beyond disgusting, disturbing and down right dangerous. We have allowed our education system to become bastions of propaganda instead of actually teaching/learning. We elect the same people over and over and expect change, this is nuts. If these political antics are allowed to continue we will soon have no one running for public office that is worth a damn. If we don't get some sanity back and stop all this we as a country are doomed and will become another Venezuela and/or third world country Since the hearings are I believe NOT required for appointing Supreme Court Justices and they have become such a valueless circus maybe it it time to do away with the process and go straight to Congress for a vote.

Thank you for your Evening Edition to keep us informed of the days news. Mike, if I did not have faith in God and His ability to expose the truth I would have nothing. I watched and have listened to both sides of the isles on CSNBC and Fox and occasionally other news stations. I do this on all issues. Here is my take: If you don't listen to both sides then maybe you should shut up because you are being brain washed. As to the latest development with the Kavanaugh confirmation - don't even know where to start! I am a female, 66 years old and was molested twice between the ages of 10 and 13. I did not tell anyone because I barely understood what was happening. I have many female friends and if I had to take a count - 8 of 10 of them were molested at some time in their lives. I can tell you exactly where these incidents happened but I could not give you the names of either man. I can tell you also that I drank (years ago, late teens and 20's) and have not remembered how I got home but never didn't remember how I got to a party or where it was held. I can assure you that I drank more than 1 beer. That being said, everyone handles issues differently. The trauma of one incident to Ms. Ford seems to have greatly affected her. I would have like to ask Ms. Ford when she first sought the psychological help and what was the one thing that brought her to think she needed help. Was it this incident or something else? Why did she attend these parties if she wasn't a big drinker and others seemed to drink to excess? I never did drugs so I didn't go to parties involving drugs. I do believe she may have been very naive as I believe her demeanor showed when she tried to answer simple questions put to her. The other thing I noticed was how unsure she seemed of some questions and had to ask her attorneys. I understand that's what they are there for but these were simple questions. She seemed somewhat mixed up to me. I believe something has happened to Ms. Ford, no doubt in my mind about that. I don't believe any of it involved Brett Kavanaugh and it appeared to me she had been coached in her testimony and may have been coached into believing it was Brett Kavanaugh by even a friend who knew her vulnerabilities. I am with Bretts daughter and will continue to pray for Ms. Ford and I also hope and pray that others will stop PREYING on her because I believe it will do her even more harm. I am also praying for Judge Kavanaugh and his family. That's my take on that.
As for the #MeToo movement - good for women who are standing up for themselves as they should! Men should not be able to take advantage of any women in any circumstance! If we are going to stand up and be taken seriously then it needs to be done on all "sides" and in all circumstances. Do not preach to me about this one women, Ms. Ford, and leave out Diane Feinstein and her reaction to Bill Clinton's accusers. It's the old adage of "you want to have your cake and eat it too." I'm not just picking on Feinstein because Hillary, herself was complicit in this and you would never convince me she did not know. She also vilified those women.
As for the abortion issue: I would never recommend to anyone without a life threatening reason to abort a fetus at any stage. Yes, I can say that, because I had two abortions in my young years because of fear and for no other reason. It can haunt you to the point of wanting to take your own life as I did. There are so many people who would adopt that child that you should consider that the better option. If in the end you want an abortion and you want to have a choice I cannot say you should be denied that choice, however you should be denied the choice of having tax paying dollars from people who cannot support that choice paying for "your" choice. When a political opinion overrides the law there is nothing but lawlessness and it is that to which we have come.
Diane Feinstein - take into consideration that you were accused of the leak of Ms. Fords letter and you deny it. No proof either way but maybe we should have an FBI investigation into that to see if we can get at the truth. What would that give us in the end? Nothing, but if it works for "your side" then it works for both sides!
    Just My Opinion

Thank you for this update. I've watched the confirmation hearing (all 4 days) and the hearing yesterday by Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh. You have summarized the actions of the Democrats very well. I can't believe that people in the states represented by them would ever send them back to Washington. I'm proud of my Senator Lindsay Graham for his remarks. The delay tactics of the Democrats against everything that President Trump is doing is so evident. The United States is far better off at this point in time due to actions taken by our President and the Republicans. I appreciate your stand for justice and keeping us informed. Thank you - Carolyn Smith

    1. The public hearing accomplished nothing except solidify opposing opinions and intensify polarization.
    2. Dems succeeded in having public believe the issue is, "Who is more credible?" rather than, "What is the evidence?"
    3. Dems have made the issue one of "Do you believe her?" So, if she isn't consciously lying, Kavanaugh MUST be lying. Ignores the possibility that severe trauma in Ford's teen years may be sublimated and recreated in her memory as a coping mechanism. Their alternative is that Kavanaugh "blacked out" during his assault.
    4. Ford & Kavanaugh are BOTH victims of the public political stunt by Dems. If they REALLY cared about her and the truth, her allegations would have been addressed early and privately.

Another victim of the rage mob, Senator Cruz. Why do not other patrons in the establishment stand up in opposition to the injustice? It is not necessary to be in agreement with the victims beliefs. If it occurs in my presence I will show solidarity to a public person's right to enjoy a night out, to simply be seen, without harassment. To rally, protest, march in PUBLIC areas is a long standing tradition. Intimidation, chaos and anarchy are not.

I believe the rage mob did not ( do not ) have parents who loved them enough to teach them societal values. Most children have a developmental stage where they will disrupt, scream, cry in a public venue, thinking they will have their way. A loving parent teaches the child will not get their way with said behavior. For the parent this is often embarrassing, and some children will not give up easily, requiring many moments. We love our children enough to teach them, even with difficulty, even with other adults sometime looking at us a bit askance. We want them to grow to be the best adults they can be. The rage mob ' children ' were failed by their parents.

I am proud to say I and their mother raised two fine men, working hard, loving and protecting their wives and families, secure in the knowledge of how to be a man, not a pathetic rage mob adult-child.

What I find very strange is that they call Dr. Ford a victim and remember only one women has made these allegations about him, but when all the women who made allegations against Bill Clinton they were called bimbos and much more...…..obviously someone who does this at a young age doesn't stop such as Bill Clinton.

Psychologists can lead patients in the wrong direction and plant situations that aren't true if they aren't competent. Dr. Ford, I believe, is a troubled person. Something did happen, but not in the way she testified even though she believes it. I've seen this in my own family with Overeaters Anonymous. They convinced my cousin her overweight was due to parents abuse. It caused a rift that was never resolved, remember the cults in the 60's.

I watched most of the dog and pony show yesterday and ford put on an award winning performance and I don't believe a word she said. She is just another typical lib turd who will lie, cheat, steal, riot, slander or ANYTHING to get her way. And she is being supported by all the other lib turds who are EXACTLY like her. It is completely despicable they way "those people" act and if we as TRUE Americans treated them the way they treat Kavanaugh and my President they would have a complete melt down. And the REAL sad part is half the "people" in this country agree with the lib tards, act the same way and support what the idiots are doing. The "political system" has become a real joke and it seems the rinos don't have the balls to do anything about it. I cannot understand how half the people in this country can keep reelecting these ass holes!!! HOW can the vast majority of the "millenials" keep supporting these obnoxious activities and keep begging for socialism. I am completely sickened by the way the rinos and jackasses are allowing the morals in this country to completely evaporate!!!
