Over the holidays, I saw the new film, “Darkest Hour,” about Winston Churchill’s early days as British Prime Minister, when he was trying to warn his countrymen of the rising danger from Germany and battling liberal leaders whom he thought were too weak in the face of Hitler’s aggression. I thought the film was terrific, and I happened to mention that there were some obvious parallels to the attacks President Trump is receiving for standing up against dictators, terrorists and open borders. Naturally, the media went nuts. How dare I compare the eeeeeeevil Donald Trump to the historical Colossus, Winston Churchill? Oh, how quickly they forget – or more likely, how they never learned in the first place because they didn’t pay attention in history class.
For those who think it’s out of bounds to draw any comparisons between Trump and Churchill and how they were depicted by their contemporaries, here’s a little quiz. Which of the following things were said about Trump, and which ones were references to Churchill?...
He’s a belligerent bully who would use the military against union strikers.
He’s an outdated throwback to a type of paranoid conservativism that places confrontation over diplomacy.
He’s a racist, an imperialist and a Muslim hater.
He’s a lying self-aggrandizer who claimed to be the lone voice speaking up for making his country strong again when that wasn’t true.
He thought Hitler and Mussolini had their good points.
He’s a war criminal who didn’t care if bombs he ordered to be dropped killed civilians.
He’s a hothead who wants to launch an unprovoked nuclear strike on his enemies.
He was blasted by a major newspaper for “startling the world” with his “outrageous propositions.”
He’s mentally unfit for office, but refuses to step down.
He doesn’t care if brown people starve.
He was described by one prominent politician from another country as being worse than Hitler, Mao or Stalin.

ANSWERS: Okay, you got me. It’s a trick question. All of those things were said about Winston Churchill. But probably also about Trump. No wonder Obama tried to keep both Churchill and Trump out of the Oval Office. Luckily, but in both cases, his efforts were a bust.
