Today's Commentary --- One woman's view: Betty's story makes me realize how GREAT America is for women -- Huck PAC's Political impact -- Stop exploiting victims -- Safe spaces -- Blexit -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Viral National Anthem -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse
A week ago, the Huckabee newsletter featured a “Huck’s Hero” named Betty Bengo, telling the story of her growing up in Uganda, being allowed by her father to attend school, getting a law degree, coming to America, meeting and marrying a Ugandan man who shared her dreams of helping desperate children in her native land, and founding the Malaika (“Angel”) Orphanage in her native country.
Well, I happen to know Betty Bengo and was at the Malaika annual fundraiser this weekend, as both a musical performer and a donor to this worthy cause. It was a wonderful international festival full of caring people, African drumming and Hawaiian dancing –- and me singing standards from the good old American songbook. We heard renditions of both “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the Ugandan anthem, and the pastor of the Laotian Baptist Church led a prayer, first in Laotian, then in English.
Betty had made matching traditional outfits for herself, her husband Peter and their three boys. The Laotian church members had prepared a buffet with authentic Laotian cuisine. But the thing I’ll remember most about this unique event, at least this year, is the speech Betty gave. You see, she didn’t just talk about the plight of the children, but also about the world into which they are born, especially the girls.

Huck PAC's Political Impact
By Mike Huckabee
My political action committee Huck PAC is a grassroots organization that relies solely on the financial support of individuals and our endorsements reflect their views.
In 2018, Huck PAC has donated $194,800 directly to candidates (9 US Senate races, 27 US House races, 5 Governors races and 23 Arkansas races).
At the end of this week, we will announce another round of endorsements and donations.
Stop exploiting victims
By Mike Huckabee
As the week begins, Americans once again find ourselves mourning the deaths of innocent victims of a mass shooting, this time of Jewish worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue by a sick, hate-filled Nazi lunatic. At this writing, it’s been reported that 11 people are dead. President Trump denounced the crime and said the killer deserves the death penalty. We should all be saying prayers for the dead and their families, and that such hate and violence should never happen again.
Sadly, this being election season, we were already in the midst of an attempt to score political points over mail bombs sent to prominent Democrats by what turned out (allegedly) to be a lone nut with a long history of arrests in Florida. Now, efforts to blame the synagogue shooting on Trump began almost immediately, even though the shooter reportedly hated him nearly as much as he hated Jews because he’s too good a friend to Israel.

While it may be impossible ever to make all spaces safe, there are some things you can do to protect yourself. It’s terrible that any place of worship should have to think about being attacked, but it’s better than being caught unprepared. At the link is an article by Dr. Jeff Sanders, who is both a pastor and a self-defense instructor, listing four steps you can take right now to make your church a harder target for such attacks:
As for individuals, Dr. Sanders also has some advice if you are ever caught in an “active shooter” situation, and there are no police or armed guards nearby. Having a concealed carry permit would be the most effective, but even if you are unarmed, you can improve your chances of survival. However, it may require you doing the opposite of what many self-styled experts keep advising us all to do. For instance, you don’t have to hunker down like a sitting duck. You might be able to escape or disarm the shooter, even if you are not armed.
As John Wayne said in “The Shootist” when his old gunfighter was asked how he survived so many people shooting at him, “It isn’t always being fast or even accurate that counts. It’s being willing.” Read this and it will help you be ready, willing and able to survive, if the worst happens.

You’ve heard of “Brexit,” the movement for Britain to leave the EU? Well, maverick hip-hop star Kanye West just introduced a line of “Blexit” T-shirts to promote black people leaving the Democratic Party. West has been the target of angry and frankly racist assaults from the left for refusing to toe the party line and meeting with President Trump to discuss issues of importance to both, such as prison reform. But the attacks have only spurred him to double down on his right to think independently
You can expect the attacks on West to ramp up even more, because if black Americans start asking the obvious question, “What have we got to show for years of loyally voting for the Democrats?” it will be a nightmare scenario for the Party.
For me, one of the most frustrating and infuriating political tactics of the left is the relentless propaganda about all Republicans being racist and not wanting black Americans to succeed. I had to combat that mindset when I was Governor of Arkansas. When I tried to reach out to help black communities, I was met with suspicion and reluctance. I’m happy to say that many community leaders, especially in the churches, eventually realized I was on the level, and we worked together to make real progress. I am very proud of the fact that when I ran for reelection, I got a larger share of the black vote than any modern-era Republican ever had in Arkansas. Again, that’s what terrifies the Democrats about what Kanye West is doing by just saying about Trump, “Why not give the guy a chance?”
The real dirty secret about Republicans that the left doesn’t want minorities to know is that all the Republicans I know or would ever associate with want every American to succeed. I don’t care if you are black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian or anything else: I want all Americans to achieve the American Dream. It saddens and infuriates me to see minority youths’ futures limited by being trapped in third-rate schools with out-of-date books, drugs, gangs and incompetent teachers. Ideally, I’d like every school to be great, but failing that, I want to see parents and students get vouchers to choose better schools. Not because Republicans hate the public school system, but because we hate seeing the potential of black kids wasted because politicians prioritize protecting the system over educating the children.
Here’s another secret Democrats don’t want you to know about Republicans and race: we are not afraid of minorities getting good educations and great jobs and becoming successful in America. We want that. Once that happens, people tend to become Republicans.

Viral National Anthem
By Mike Huckabee
With so much tragedy and division in the news today, this is a story that everyone needs to see. Jackson Dean Nicholson is a high school senior from Gambrills, Maryland. He hopes to be a country music star and performs under the name Jackson Dean. He’s already been posting songs on YouTube for years, but an unlikely one just went viral: his countrified version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” He sang it before a game, wearing his school football uniform and playing his guitar. It surprised and delighted the stadium crowd, and it’s done the same thing online, where it's been shared over 175,000 times so far.
If you’ve given up on watching NFL games because you’re fed up with the lack of patriotism during the National Anthem, then watch this high school football game opener and feel your faith restored.
