Last night, President Trump gave Fox News’ Sean Hannity his first interview since being cleared of “collusion” with Russia by the Mueller report. At this link, you’ll find a recap of the major points and video of the interview if you missed it.
Trump made it clear that now that the investigation is over, he is going on the offensive to get to the bottom of how it was launched and why partisan investigators were allowed to use known unverified evidence to get FISA courts to grant warrants to spy on American citizens. Mincing no words, Trump called it “treasonous” for “dirty cops” in the FBI to abuse their power to try to undermine and overthrow a legitimately-elected President from within. He made the point that if Republicans had tried to overthrow Obama like that, they’d be in jail for life.
He said, “This can never, ever happen to a President again. That was a disgrace and an embarrassment to our country...Hopefully, they won't get away with it.” He said he would order the declassification and release of the full and unredacted Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants and related documents used by the FBI to investigate his campaign to help explain how the “Russian collusion” claim got started.
Well, I think we all know how it got started: Hillary Clinton and her supporters couldn’t accept that she lost because their policies don’t work and she was a lousy candidate. So they concocted this phony conspiracy between Trump and Russia to blame it on. Also, insiders who had already been abusing the powers of their federal agencies to harm Trump’s campaign panicked when he won because they were afraid they were be exposed instead of rewarded, so they ramped up the effort to undermine and besmirch him to save themselves.
The media gleefully parroted the collusion narrative because that’s what they wanted to believe. It hamstrung Trump’s agenda, harmed America in the eyes of the world, and encouraged hostile powers such as China, Iran and North Korea to avoid dealing with Trump because they figured he was weakened and might be impeached soon. That harmed every American in multiple ways and made the world a more dangerous place.
I’m sure Trump will be depicted by the media as petty or vengeful for saying he wants to get to the bottom of this and make sure the people behind it are punished. But those people richly deserve punishment for violating the public trust in the most illegal, unconstitutional and unconscionable ways. If they want forgiveness, they can always ask it of Jesus while they’re praying in their prison cells.
In the “Hannity” interview, President Trump also called on his loudest Congressional critic, Rep. Adam Schiff, to resign, following up on a tweet in which he accused Schiff of “knowingly and illegally lying and leaking.” He called Schiff, now, ironically, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, a “criminal.”
But since that doesn’t disqualify you from Congress, he probably won’t resign. As Mark Twain wrote, “There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress." He wrote that in 1897, and I think some of the criminals who were in Congress at the time might still be there.
