Today's Commentary: A prayer for our missing sailors -- Who do the independents blame? -- Black employment rises -- Wolf's kneejerk response -- Reasonable compromise -- News Bits
Good morning America!
I hope you’ll all join me in saying a prayer for the 10 sailors missing and five injured, and their families, after the guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker east of Singapore. This is the second such collision involving a US Navy ship in recent months, and considering the vastness of the ocean and the recent Chinese naval aggression, it naturally sparked suspicions. But as this story notes, it is a narrow passage and one of the world’s busiest waterways. So it could be just an accident, but if so, one that needs to be thoroughly investigated with an eye not just to finding out how it happened but how to prevent it from happening yet again.
Who do the independents blame?
By Mike Huckabee
We’re finally, blessedly, at the end of a week in which just about everyone in the media declared President Trump an honorary Klan Kleagle for saying that both sides contributed to the violence in Charlottesville, not just the far-right. So how has all that one-sided media coverage affected public opinion?
A new poll by Survey Monkey found that 49% of adult Americans think, like Trump, that the leftwing counterprotesters were at least partially to blame for the violence. Those with political affiliations broke down along predictable lines, with Republicans largely blaming the left and Democrats largely blaming the right. But the most interesting finding is that among the group both sides have to sway to win elections, 66% of Independents blame the violence, either partially or entirely, on the leftist counter-protesters.
Sorry to disillusion all the reporters, pundits, celebrities and late night comics/policy analysts-without-portfolio, but it turns out that microphones and cameras are not brainwashing devices.
Black employment rises
By Mike Huckabee
Amid all the accusations that the Trump Administration only cares about white people, the Bureau of Labor Statistics just reported that since last July, black unemployment in the US has dropped to its lowest level in 17 years. Heritage Foundation economist Steven Moore notes that “the black unemployment rate has fallen by a full percentage point in the last year, black labor force participation is up, and the number of black Americans with a job has risen by 600,000 from last year. Preliminary data show black wages and incomes up since the election,” along with growth in consumer and investor confidence.
The left’s response: that’s all just an “accident.” The rise in black employment and wages is due to Obama’s policies that for years lowered black income levels and black teenage labor force participation rates, but that finally started showing remarkable results after he left office.
Oh, and look! A Confederate monument!
Wolf's kneejerk response
By Mike Huckabee
Even in the midst of the horror and tragedy in Barcelona, some American news media outlets just couldn’t stop trying to find a way to hang all bad news on Donald Trump. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer actually pondered aloud about whether the van attack might be a copycat of the Charleston white supremacist car killer. Presumably, that would reflect some guilt onto Trump because…why? Is he somehow responsible for the car killer in Charlottesville because CNN didn’t like the way he reacted to it? And no, it wasn’t a copycat of Charlottesville. It was obviously a long-planned terrorist attack, like the eight other jihadist-inspired vehicle attacks that have struck Europe or Israel just since January 1 of this year.
This kind of kneejerk response to blame everything bad that happens on Trump is so ingrained at places like CNN that they do it even when it makes them look like idiots. It’s like trying to stop a freight train: it’s been rolling so long so fast in one direction with a big, heavy load of manure that they couldn’t stop even if they knew they were about to go right off the rails.

The media coverage of the Barcelona attack provided a sharp contrast with the recent Charlottesville vehicle killing. Some observers noted that while the media and Democrats ripped President Trump for taking 48 hours to denounce the perpetrator as an alt-right white supremacist when he claimed he was waiting for accurate information on what happened, the same critics do everything possible to avoid mentioning radical Islam even long after they know it was an ISIS-inspired attack. Isn’t there some reasonable compromise between rushing to judgement and refusing to display any judgement whatsoever?
Why are the far-left Antifa protesters trying to reignite the hatreds and divisions of the Civil War era? Maybe because a surprising number of them are relics of the Cold War era themselves.
…And in addition to the USSR, they also seem to have a warm spot in their hearts for North Korea. Wonder if they know what the penalty for toppling a statue of a leader there is?
Everybody loves a story about finding a treasure in a bargain bin, and this one is out of this world.
