Democrats have spewed forth a lot of ridiculously over-the-top reactions to the passage of the GOP tax reform bill (it’s Armageddon, the death of democracy, the worst bill ever passed, etc.), but one of the most colorful came from California Rep. Jackie Spiere, who said this (full quote at the link):

“This may be the most shameful day in the history of Congress…We’re going to put 9 million kids in this country at risk. And these 9 million kids aren’t eligible for Medicaid, and their families can’t afford the Affordable Care Act. Because they have to pay a certain amount and the subsidized amount doesn’t cover the cost… Wealthy Americans, big fat Christmas present for you. Tiny Tim, we’re taking your crutch away from you and all the other kids in this country, and we’re putting a lump of coal into your Christmas stocking.”

Shocking report

By Mike Huckabee

A shocking new Senate report reveals that 40% of births in America now occur out of wedlock.  The study also reveals some shocking ways in which this trend has negatively affected children.  It seems that some of the people who talk about children’s rights but who also championed the sexual revolution and the overthrow of traditional morality never stopped to think about what prioritizing adults’ right to commitment-free sexual pleasure over marriage and parental responsibility would do to the children’s right to grow up in a loving home with two parents.

Defections up

By Mike Huckabee

Another North Korean soldier defected this week, taking advantage of thick fog to rush across the border as South Korean soldiers fired warning shots at his North Korean pursuers.  Also this week, two North Korean civilians were rescued from a fishing boat as they attempted to defect.  That makes a total of 15 North Koreans who have defected this year.

That doesn’t sound high, but it’s three times the number who defected last year.  And when you consider that they are risking dangerous seas, landmines, barbed wire and being hunted down and shot or imprisoned and tortured if they’re captured, that should give you an idea of just how bad it must be to continue living there.

Abortion clinics closing

By Mike Huckabee

A new study by the pro-life group Operation Rescue reveals that in 2017, more than twice as many abortion clinics closed in America than the number of new abortion clinics that opened.  This will likely be spun as the result of rightwing government oppression and a terrible blow for “women’s health services.”

But in fact, despite Planned Parenthood’s best sales pitches for killing your own baby, abortion clinics are closing due to steadily falling demand.  Even in California, where the laws are made by radically pro-choice liberal Democrats, a dozen abortion clinics went out of business between 2011 and 2016.  The new generation of young women are finding it impossible to keep believing in the outdated view of pregnancy and human development in the womb that pro-abortion activists have been clinging to since the early 1970s. Talk about “science deniers!”

Christmas miracle

By Mike Huckabee

The massive power outage at the Atlanta airport created a nightmare for thousands of travelers, but it did bring about what some are calling a “Christmas miracle”: to feed the multitudes of stranded travelers, Chick-fil-a opened on Sunday!

Fantasy worlds

By Mike Huckabee

A recent poll found that due to the media credulously repeating the left’s hyperbolic attacks on the new tax reform bill (which even some honest liberal outlets have admitted aren’t true), only 17% of Americans believe they will pay less or get bigger refunds, even though nearly 80% actually will.  Yesterday brought a prime example of the mass media’s power to misinform on a grand scale, when NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie asked House Speaker Paul Ryan if he was “living in a fantasy world” to believe that the lowered corporate tax rate would boost the economy.  His answer is at the link, and I salute him for resisting the temptation to point out that “Today” show hosts who protected Matt Lauer’s reputation as a respected journalist for so long should know what living in a fantasy world really means.

Getting less attention is her other question, pressing him about whether the resulting growth will cover the estimated $1.5 trillion the bill would add to the deficit over time (for the record, such projections are notoriously unreliable and based on factors that are impossible to predict.)  It’s quaint to see that media people and liberal politicians who didn’t bat an eye as the Obama years doubled the national debt to $20 trillion are now suddenly born-again deficit hawks.  Frankly, I don’t like the idea of adding to the deficit either, but I refuse to believe that a government that’s spending $4 trillion a year can’t find any way to cut back that won’t throw widows and orphans into the streets.

But here’s the problem: having already run up $20 trillion on our grandkids’ credit card, unless the economy expands at a much higher rate than 1 or 2% a year (which liberals have been desperately trying to convince us is “the new normal”) and boosts tax revenues, we’re never going to crawl out of that hole.  Will this bill create enough growth to cover the entire gap?  Maybe not.  But we’ve already seen what the left’s prescription of bigger government, higher taxes and more job-killing regulations did for the national debt.  And the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

The article on 40% of births being out of wedlock did not surprise me. But then, with just one article between the two, you state that more abortion clinics are closing than are being opened because of decreased demand. All of a sudden, I connected the two. Rather than aborting, the mothers are deciding to keep their babies, although unmarried. I realize there’s more to it than that and acknowledge the fact that many young people today view marriage as unnecessary, but lives are being saved. The impact on those lives will be seen in years to come and I doubt it will be good, but they have life and breath—a precious gift from God!
