There’s a world-shaking event taking place right now, but getting very little media coverage. While other nations are preoccupied with the coronavirus China unleased on us all, the communist government of Beijing is launching a crackdown that many fear will spell the end of Hong Kong’s “semi-autonomous” status. Some of us have been expecting and dreading this day from the moment the UK handed over Hong Kong to China in 1997. China remained hands-off for a while, as it enjoyed the wealth generated by Hong Kong, but there was no way communists would ever allow people under their rule to remain that free for the long haul.

Some say China won’t take away too much of Hong Kong’s autonomy because it will harm business, chase away foreign investors and ultimately hurt China. But to anyone who knows how communism works, what’s happening now is no more surprising than the fable about the scorpion that stung the frog that was carrying it across the river on its back. What we’re seeing in Hong Kong – the repression, arrests, intimidation, tear-gassing of protesters, etc. – is just in their nature.

In a related story, anyone who thinks that shifting blame for the coronavirus from China to Trump will help win elections might want to check out a stunning new poll by FTI Consulting. It found that in the wake of the pandemic, up to 94% of American voters want more nationalistic economic policies. 94% want labels on goods telling where they are from; 76% are willing to pay more for goods made in America; and (hang on to your hats, anti-Trumpers) 66% want more tariffs placed on foreign imports.

My advice to the Democrats: tell those 94% of voters that they’re racist and xenophobic.

Lt. Col. Allen West has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home after suffering a motorcycle accident in Texas Saturday. Details at the link. He says he thanks God and he thanks everyone who sent their prayers for him. Please keep them coming.

Before I write about this story, a few caveats:

1. We are learning more about the COVID-19 (Chinese – that NEVER changes!) coronavirus all the time, so there’s nothing particularly nefarious about changing mistaken policies based on new data, it’s just how the learning curve works. However, sticking with bad policies after you know they aren’t working or are making matters worse is not defensible.

2. Of course, any deaths are tragedies by definition, and terrible for the victim and their loved ones. But that’s a risk with any disease. In a nation of 328 million people, a pandemic is likely to kill many people, especially the old and already health-compromised, and there is nothing that any political leader can do to stop it. The job titles are President and Governor, not “God.” Bad decisions by leaders can make things worse, but I refer you back to #1 above.

3. I’ve written about this before but will say it again: whenever a health crisis passes, there’s always second-guessing and finger-pointing. If it was really bad, someone must be blamed. If it wasn’t that bad, someone must be accused of overreacting to a non-threat. In truth, it’s usually a chicken-or-egg situation: we don’t know if the precautions weren’t needed because it wasn’t that bad or it wasn’t that bad because we took the precautions. But that doesn’t stop people from claiming they know when they pretend to be experts on TV.

Okay, with all of that out of the way, here are the latest CDC numbers on the dangers of the coronavirus:

The CDC’s current “best estimates” are that 35% of Americans who contract the coronavirus are asymptomatic – that is, they don’t get sick at all. Among those who do suffer symptoms, 3.4% get sick enough to need hospitalization, and 0.4% die.

This is not meant to downplay the importance of continuing to take precautions to avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus. But 0.4% is a far cry from the original WHO estimate of a 3.4% fatality rate that was cited to justify shutting down the economy. Remember when President Trump said he suspected the fatality rate was actually less than 1%, and he was ripped by the media for his irresponsible science-denying? Well, it appears he was right.

It should also be pointed out that much of the nationwide lockdown panic was based on heavy cases in the New York area skewing the numbers.

I’m sure these latest CDC numbers will be either ignored or attacked by people who want to continue the lockdowns until after the election. But I’d love to hear their justification for continuing based on a 0.4% fatality rate. After that, they could explain why liquor stores should be allowed to stay open but churches can’t. Or they could explain why a Democratic Governor can ban everyone else from going to their vacation homes, but she can not only go to hers but her husband can try to cut in line at the boat ramp. News flash: that didn’t go well.

They could also explain why the Governor of Virginia is able to lecture everyone else to wear a mask, then immediately afterward mingle with people without a mask. Oh well, it’s not as offensive as some of the things he actually has put on his face.

Or why it’s okay to order the peasants to lock down and social distance, then invite dozens of your friends to a party at your mansion?

Finally, I always make it a point when I criticize the never-ending lockdowns to note that I am not a doctor or scientist. So here’s a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who blasted the fatality estimates as wildly exaggerated back in March, and who claims that the lockdowns might have cost more lives than they saved.

The news media have tilted liberal for decades, but they've let their animosity toward President Trump push them so far to the left (with their lack of fairness and objectivity also being reflected in upscale magazines, Hollywood and even late night comedy shows) that they have passed their “tipping point” of ever being able to come back to responsible, trustworthy journalism – at least not without losing the leftist audience they are now dependent on.

None of that is in any way surprising to you or me, but you’ve got to admit, it’s interesting to see reality finally dawning on the former president of CBS News.

Proving it’s truly “blue” Hawaii, the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, which is part of the state government, has written a proposal to deal with the coronavirus through a “feminist economic recovery plan.” This mostly involves throwing tax money at favored female identity groups and a lot of blatant, and likely illegal, sex discrimination against men.

Like every other leftist “economic plan” ever devised, it’s virtually guaranteed to backfire in an explosion of unintended consequences and hurt everyone, particularly the people it claims to help. For instance, it includes an extra-high $24.80/hour minimum wage for single mothers. How long will it take employers to figure out that they shouldn’t hire any single mothers because it will cost them so much more to get the same job done than it would if they just hired men?

I used to think that “jumbo shrimp” was the best example of an oxymoron, but now I’m leaning toward “feminist economic recovery plan.” Thanks, Hawaii!

Are you suffering from “maskne?” That’s the cutesy new name invented for acne, pimples, etc. that people develop on their faces from wearing masks too long. Here are some tips on what to do about it.

By the way, while health care workers and others who are forced to wear a mask at work have no choice, the best way to avoid getting “maskne” from wearing a mask too long is to not wear a mask for so long. That’s better for your bloodstream, lungs and sinuses, too.

Regarding China and Hong Kong, when England handed that colony over to China in 1997, there was supposed to be a 50-year transition period where the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was supposed to keep a "hand-off" policy towards them. However, in 1997, the income the CCP enjoyed from Hong Kong was a higher percentage of their total GDP than it is now. Apparently, they have calculated that they can now handle the economic penalty of cracking down on Capitalism in Hong Kong. I've never understood why the British handed Hong Kong over to the CCP, except that it had something to do with a lease expiring? So much for "the Sun Never Sets on the British Empire" ...

I grew up in a small Ohio town that had no black people. We had several Hispanic families and that was it. I can't remember ever having any racism and any problems.
When I went to college, I met, studied and hung around with many people of different races and backgrounds. I found it very interesting learning about their backgrounds and feelings. I have a truly hard time calling Americans anything other than fellow Americans. To me, I find it difficult calling people who are here in this country legally, anything but American. I really wish we could put aside the color thing and just enjoy each other as fellow Americans and work to build a great country for everyone who wants to work and learn! God bless all Americans and All Americans Bless God!

Please make President Trump aware of this ASAP:
"I've just received an absent voter ballot application from Jocelyn Benson, MI Secretary of State, for my late son Daniel David VanLoozen who moved to AZ from my Michigan home in 2004 and died there in 2013. He was a registered Democrat (I'm Republican). What can be done??????"
(He never even voted in Michigan!) I submitted this comment on a WH form but want him to know asap.

With the Lefts fascination with Communism, Socialism, how does a large portion of our population endorse this group? I am disturbed by the hate this group has for this country; within the population people belonging to this group love watching sports amateur and professional, love nature and the resources it brings lakes steams rivers mountains, the chance to to earn a life that people around the world doesn't know it exists; I know the Left has let it cities rot homelessness is out of control in our cities this is the product of the Left's leadership so why does a large portion of our population endorse a group that extends decay and lawlessness? This group has no use for the elderly the leaders of the Left that run our Large cities have proven that Bloomberg pull the plug on old sick people has financed a lot of the Lefts leaders so why so much hate some say its power I say China is behind a lot of this WE better focus a lot more on China and stop supporting it. The time is now before it too late it's time to stop China.

Is there no country's that will call out China for starting WWIII? It's been long well-known about countries testing and putting biological weapons in force. This is exactly what is going on and China is getting away with it and all the unfortunate lives lost...due to their either accidental or intended war weapon.
It reminds me of Hitler after WWI telling all the European countries they intend on peace and want everyone to embrace peace. All the while He was already creating genocide and was building up for war and carrying the armed weight of his weapons or (peace keeping lies), and everyone beiieved him...except Winston. Ol Churchill knew the truth. I wonder what he would say or imply with China now??

Very sad about China. Hope there won't be a great deal of bloodshed. It seems as if the forces of evil are aligning as our media disregard this and root for the communists; as they support Islamism and slaughter of the unborn; as they confuse gender. Surely this is the work of our Enemy and many do not know from whence they came and to where they are bound. Thank God He has given us His Unspeakable Gift!

I am truly frightened that The DNC will prevail in November. This country will be in huge trouble if that happens. Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge about economics knows this to be true. The scary part is that Biden is probably not nearly as left as the party seems to be going but with his mental issues, he will simply have to do what he is told by lefty advisors and people like Schumer and Pelosi. I wish I had more faith in the American people at this point to See this like it is. What hear is, ‘we want a gentleman in the White House.” We want less controversy and more peace. Well, there will not be peace when all these retirees have their carefully earned and saved up retirement funds evaporate and when kids graduating can’t find a job. The press knows this as well as you and I but they make a meal on controversy. Plus, no one from the past administration will be prosecuted. Nothing to see here folks. Barr and Durham better hurry up. They don’t have much time. Now I see where there is conjecture about who gave the codes for the DNC servers to the Russians. Naturally the implication is the Trump team. How they would have gotten them does not seem to matter? They just make it up as they go along. Do we really want someone with dementia in charge of the nuclear codes? No one thinks of that.

no disresepect to the Nobel Prize winner, but my belief is that our failing to open in a couple weeks (by Easter) as Trump first requested was what cost lives; not shutting down so much as failing to open up again. many of us didn't realize the power small fascists had to upend what we were being told would happen if we cooperated with the shut-down.

Hong Kong! Over the last several years I have talked to many Hong Kongers and Boat People from Vietnam and found that they have never stopped! Oh the main point is that I did my first Tour of Duty in '67-'68 during TET and traded places with a Black young man who asked if he could TRADE PLACES with me and I agreed and so he and his two close friends went off to Guard Duty that night and All were killed on the LZ! So I have lived and done/do ALL I CAN in my life in memory to "Billy Boy"(the black young man) and the others aboard the Chopper that afternoon! I graduated from College when I came back and worked as a Sec. Teacher for about ten years and then Opened Up Broadway Gymnastic School in Santa Monica, Ca. and that was in 1978 and we are just waiting now to re-open and keep Growing and "Helping Children Grow"! Now we are located in Los Angeles, Ca. Well as the years flew by I realized that I needed to learn if the people that I had heard so many times say "Oh that was a Bad War"! We never should have been there! Well I remembered although I was only 20yr's old when I arrived that the South Vietnamese people were So GRATEFUL THAT WE CAME and that we protected them! Lets go back to the Boat People! When I went with my wife Mary we were lucky enough to travel from Hanoi to Saigon by car over 13days changing Guides every two days! So of course I/we were able to ask any questions that we wanted! What we found out was that Anyone who could get out with their children they would in a Breath if the had the money or they would give ANYTHING to get away from the Baby China that they had become in '75! My wife and I had a chance to visit three different families that lived outside of Da Nang and each had a young child with special needs and were being helped by "The Children of Vietnam Foundation" which we had coordinated before we left the states! We coordinated with our guide to visit the Homes and we were at the first families home and I was working with the child and then my wife took over and started working with the young man and I noticed a person drive up on a moped and stopped about 50yrds away and she turned off the motor and stepped off and put her hat on the seat and proceeded to watch us and what we were doing! I leaned over to our Guide and ask "Who is the lady watching us?" HE SADID OH! SHE IS FROM THE "PARTY" (the Communist Party)! SHE WILL NEVER COME OVER AND TALK TO US! SHE FOLLOWED US TO EACH HOUSE AND WATCHED! We never saw her the rest of our stay! The "Party" watches their every move! Oh the Guide also said we get to vote for Mayor etc. BUT WE HAVE LEARNED THAT THEY "VET" EACH OF LETS SAY FIVE PEOPLE RUNNING FOR MAYOR! So he said they really don't give us but only ONE CHOICE/THEIR CHOICE IS FORCED ONTO US! People said I bet you cried a lot! I quickly said back No the only people I cry for are the Vietnamese People who will be living like this for "ALL ETERNITY"! Michael
