Today's Commentary --- Arizona voters: you are being duped by the Kyrsten Sinema campaign -- Huck PAC's Political impact -- Trick or Treat -- Oregon -- Stock Market Update -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Alabama Huck's Hero -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse

A week out, one has to ask, what is going on in the Arizona Senate race?

In a contest between former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and 26-year veteran Martha McSally, who seems to be a stellar Republican candidate, and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, polls show the two competitors in a tight race. Unless Sinema’s own description of Arizona as “the meth lab of democracy” is true, it’s hard to account for her competitiveness at this point. It shouldn’t be close. But Project Veritas’ new undercover video offers a clue as to why it is.

To lure moderates, she’s pretending to be one.

Trick or treat

By Mike Huckabee

As if Halloween trick-or-treaters weren’t playing enough scary tricks on Americans, we had this headline…

Some are pointing out that Hillary did not say she was going to run again, just that she would like to be President. Thank goodness, we all now know that being declared President without campaigning for it doesn’t work for her.

Other than California or Massachusetts, it would be hard to name a state more synonymous with “progressivism” than Oregon. Somehow, just in the space of the run of the TV sitcom “Portlandia,” the image of Portland has devolved from amusing time capsule of hippy-dippy quirkiness to angry leftists blocking the streets, attacking cars and screaming at people who dare hold different political views.

But are the majority of Oregonians really on board with all the crazy ideas of today’s “so-far-left-they’ve-left-sanity-behind” left? We’ll find out next week.

Oregon is one of the oldest “sanctuary states,” having overwhelmingly passed a law in 1987 to block local police from helping to enforce immigration laws.  That and all the social services have made Oregon a magnet for illegal immigrants.  There are an estimated 146,000 living in Oregon and costing taxpayers $1.22 billion a year.  And there are signs that many Oregonians don’t want to “put a bird on it” (“Portlandia” reference), they want to stick a fork in it. For instance, in 2014, Oregonians voted 2-1 to repeal the law providing drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants.

And on Tuesday, they will vote on a measure backed by immigration reformers and at least 16 Oregon sheriffs to repeal the 1987 “sanctuary state” law.  Opponents say it’s a failure and it’s victimizing law-abiding citizens. The repeal campaign has been fueled by a number of recent events, including the growing “caravan” heading northward from Central America, and the case of Sergio Martinez.  He was an illegal immigrant in Portland who was released from jail instead of being turned over to ICE, despite having been deported 13 times before.  He then sexually assaulted two women and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Defenders of the sanctuary law argue that only a small handful of illegal immigrants commit serious crimes so they don’t need to cooperate with ICE to deport those who have.  Which is like saying that only a small handful of citizens commit serious crimes, so we don’t need to build jails for those who do.

As you head to the polls to cast your vote, think of Oregon as a microcosm for the entire immigration debate. National-level Democratic strategists are desperately trying to deny that they want to open the borders, abolish ICE and do away with immigration laws, even as their base demands those very things.  But in Oregon, they had their way, and the Sergio Martinez case was the result. Tragically, it’s nowhere near the only such example.  If a liberal policy is a proven, deadly failure on the state level, so much so that even many Oregonians want to reverse it, why on Earth would you vote to empower people who want to impose it nationwide?

Stock Market Update

By Mike Huckabee

If you have money in the stock market, October has been an even more frightening Halloween month than usual, with the Dow swinging wildly enough to induce nausea, like the camera work in “The Blair Witch Project.” But experts advise that if you’re feeling sick, just stop watching and go sit it out until it blows over.

Dan Celia is president and CEO of Financial Issues Stewardship Ministries and host of the popular radio show, “Financial Issues” (note: he’ll also be my guest on next Saturday’s “Huckabee” on TBN.)  He warns that as scary as these market dives are, the longterm outlook is good.  He notes that if you’d pulled your money out of the market after the meltdown of 2008 and put it in CDs, you would have missed out on the greatest up trend in history.

As for why there is this correction, the causes are mostly temporary: anxiety over the election, Trump’s trade battle with China, or the media trying to talk down the economy or ignore good news for political purposes (remember Bill Maher being honest enough to admit that he was rooting for a recession just to hurt Trump?)  But the underlying fundamentals (employment, productivity, consumer and business confidence, GDP growth, etc.) are the strongest in at least 15 years.  Celia says it's a good sign that the market is being driven by the economy, not by central bank meddling or government intervention.

The real impediment to a rally is the possibility of Democrats winning back the House next week.  Mike Novogratz of Galaxy Investment Partners predicted the recent drop in stocks, and he warns, “You’ve had the Trump train going for a while, he’s had both the House and Senate. And if you have a Democrat House, it’s just going to be noise and noise and noise. The Trump agenda gets muted some.”

So the best thing you can do to protect your investments (as well as your job and your paycheck and national security) is to go to the polls and vote to insure that the policies that created those strong fundamentals aren’t reversed with high taxes, increased regulation and pointless investigations and impeachment hearings tying the hands of the people whom you sent to DC to clean out the donkey stable and get the economy back on track.

And if you want to be scared, turn off CNBC and go see that new “Halloween” movie, the one about how women who want to protect themselves should carry guns.

Alabama Huck's Hero

By Mike Huckabee

After the horrific shooting in Pittsburgh, it’s a relief to be able to point to a Huck’s Hero in Alabama who prevented untold deaths by stopping an attempted mass shooting.

The unidentified dad was leaving a McDonald’s in Birmingham with his teenage sons when a masked man entered and started firing.  Fortunately, the dad had a concealed weapon, which he quickly unconcealed and fired back.  The dad and one of his sons suffered injuries but will recover; however, the gunman later died.  McDonald’s worker Markus Washington ran and hid in the freezer when he heard all the shots.  He told WBRC-TV that he was imagining everyone dead and the shooter coming to look for him.  He said about the dad, “He’s my hero. Because I can only imagine how it would’ve went if he wasn’t armed.”

Those who think disarming the law-abiding is the answer to mass shootings, and who are shamelessly politicizing the deaths in Pittsburgh to promote that agenda, refuse to acknowledge that the “good guy with a gun” scenario exists or claim it’s extremely rare.  They ignore the many cases where simply showing a gun prevents a crime from happening, so it's not reported as a crime or shooting.  And they never seem to grasp that maybe the reason it’s rare for a good guy with a gun to stop a mass shooting is because their misguided faith in “gun-free zones” insures there won’t be any good guys with guns nearby when a shooter picks one of those places as his target.

Oregon are they totally nuts there? Why are you wanting to let in half the world and do what with these people? See what is happening in Europe and where they have tired to be caring and are being bit in the hand for doing this? Dealing with a whole culture that is not like what we have become today? Seen here in Georgia the thousands we let in and took over jobs for low pay . Why we have went overseas to fight to help many countries try to have decent Govt. Hard to change how many believe.
The father in Ala. Gov I have heard very little about this I did see on the News on internet but not heard any TV news discuss what or why this man did this came in shooting who all did he shoot. Some have also forgotten with this shooting at the Synagogue the other shooting in Texas over a year or so ago and the guy who across the street from the church ran over with his rifle and stopped this shooter from hurting more? Pres saying in Pittsburgh if they maybe had a gun and sad to say this today but more of what is going on that we may want a gun.
