As you know, I welcome all points of view and am fine with being put in the “hot seat” to support my own.  So here’s a letter that came in Thursday from reader Pernell D. regarding my commentary on “Trump’s Wall.”

The money spent on something that is not needed and is impractical instead of solutions that are needed is a political farce. There are places that need a physical wall of some kind and the money should go to fix security infrastructure. This is not about border security, but is purely political. We need to enforce the visa laws and other effective solutions. Gangs, drug trafficking, isn't going to be fixed this way, remember, El Chapo. Plus, the Dems wanted to give Trump his money to appease him, but he refused because of DACA. Why doesn't Trump have the Russians pay for, they owe him that for betraying our country. I hope I hear the Dems say "Lock him up". Thanks, ex-Conservative Republican.

Thanks for writing, Pernell.  I don’t know what turned you into an ex-conservative, but if it’s mostly a matter of today’s political climate and Trump’s bombastic style, I hope you’ll re-thnk that at some point.

The money at stake here is really such a small “down payment” that it makes little sense to use fiscal restraint as an argument against a border barrier.  You appear to agree with one thing I said:  that there are places where an effective physical barrier is needed and other places where different solutions must be found.  (For example, we have places in Texas where the border is in the middle of a river.)  But let’s get started on constructing the barrier where we know it will work, as we continue to develop a comprehensive plan for border control.

RELATED READING: "Trump's Wall": So don't call it Trump's, and don't call it a wall

You also won’t find any disagreement from me on the need to enforce visa laws.  In fact, when it comes to the enforcement of immigration laws, you’ll find a lot more disagreement on the Democratic side than you will here.  And legislators really needs to fix laws that tie the hands of our immigration officials at the border, but don’t expect that from this Congress.

Trump has shown willingness to negotiate on DACA, etc., to get the necessary appropriations.  At this point, it appears to be the Democrats who have dug in and refuse to do anything that helps Trump get “his wall.”  And THAT’S where it gets, as you say, “purely political.”  Complain to Sen. Chuck Schumer about that.  (He was for a barrier at the border before he was against it.)

Your mindset becomes clear when you sign off by accusing Trump of “betraying our country” with the Russians.  For literally years now, we here at have been examining all aspects of the “Trump/Russia” investigation with an electron microscope and can find no evidence to support such an accusation.  We’re not playing politics with this and if we had something that implicated Trump, we would say so.  Certainly we would not stand by and let any president, Democrat or Republican, betray his country!  But what we see are poorly-sourced “news” stories that the media eagerly run with but that turn out to be false or at best unproven, “journalism’s” equivalent of the Steele dossier.

If it’s determined that Michel Cohen actually went to Prague and “colluded” on Trump’s behalf –- and with his knowledge –- to win in 2016, then we can pick this conversation up again.  But for now, the hard evidence we see for lawbreaking and even some Russian “collusion” happens to be associated with the Clintons.

Again, thanks for writing; I really want to hear and address opposing views.  At the same time, I hope you’ll take Dr. Huckabee’s advice for treating Trump Derangement Syndrome:  avoid CNN and MSNBC, and read my newsletter twice a day!

I think this fellow has been listening to msm? IIRC, President Trump offered democrats MORE than they were demanding on DACA, and it was DEMOCRATS who turned him down. Which shows DACA is just some kind of smoke screen--to be used when it fits their agenda, but evidently not important enough to accept MORE than they demanded for DACA.

To all who support the notion that the illegals (pronounced by some as un-doc-u-men-ted) I ask those individuals be willing to take one of these "unfortunate into their home, feed them, treat them medically, provide shelter and assistance to purchase all the items they would like, from clothing to the latest in a super fast car at their expense, there would be an outcry for something to be done about it. Nancy, Chuck, Adam, Jerry, Maxine, Hillary, and Barrack plus all the news commentators should put their money where their mouth is. I would bet these people write off more in tax deductions than such action would cost. Why should I pay for someone else to have a cushy life? ( I bet they lock their doors at night also.)

I totally agree with this idea, but I think there is a more immediate need to stop immigration in this country. The very agent that needs to be stopping the illegal immigration and exerting some kind of control over other agencies that hire illegals and disregard the laws of this country, is failing badly. The INS has always tried to keep the good ones away and does not ever bother with the bad ones. In other words, those people who try to do the due diligence to become lawful residents/citizens, are put on a long drawn wait, and, particularly in my case, they lost my file for 2 years...leaving me without identity or citizenship stuck in this country...I have a lot more to say about that but for now, all I would like to say is there is a much larger IMMEDIATE need to strengthen or better yet, scrap altogether this agency and create an entirely new agency that will function efficiently and provide the proper diligence to the process of immigration, as well as function as an enforcement agent, with a "police" force that will patrol and go door to door after those who are here doing the wrong things. More importantly, the agencies of the government should all be connected and identify illegals as they try to make their way into our systems. The hospital should stop receiving aid from government as they are the ones giving everyone who enters here medical attention for free on the expense of the tax payers. Try that in Mexico or any other country! Not happening. The gimme gimme needs to stop...everyone needs to get on board, otherwise, NO barrier, wall or chasm will stop this abuse.

It seems to me, when a question or comment has been asked, the correct response should be to reverse the question back to the questioner. For example,
    1. Why don't you, President Trump, give us your tax returns? answer Why don't you, Ms Pelosi, give us your tax return first? I wager Ms Pelosi would not want to give that information so why would President Trump!
    2. Why do you want to build a physical wall, President Trump? answer Why don't you Ms Pelosi tear down the walls you have around your property? I wager Ms Pelosi would not like than, so that is the reason President Trump wants to have walls for the security of USA!
The point is what is good for USA is also good for the people; I.E. if something is good for you, it should also be good for me.
I am sure many other people like me don't understand where common sense went. We don't want "political correction" we just want common sense.
Mike, you are doing good!! Keep the good work, thank you!!
    Faithfully yours

You have an ear to the president - and also through your lovely daughter. The president needs to follow FDR’s example - address the people of the nation directly about the need for a ‘barrior’. One talking point you don’t hear enough is the daily costs of having people illegally in our country. Costs for healthcare, education, food stamps, etc., over the period of a year they FAR exceed the $5B he is asking for, and further, they accomplish absolutely nothing to protect our nation.

I loved reading Bill's letter. What he says makes so much sense. Like he said all the new modern technology, drones, etc. are not going to stop the illegals from crossing the border. Tell that to the Democrats. They can't process facts, statistics or truth. Is Nancy going to remove that wall from in front of her mansion in Pacific Heights, SF? Now is that wall immoral? With the Dems. it's all politics and they don't want the President to have a win. It's obvious they don't care about the safety of the American people and only care about the illegals and votes for them. It's shameful .
I love reading your newsletters. You speak the truth always. Thank you.

    Dear Governor Huckabee,

I just want to point out to those who are against the wall-that when a person passes on they go up to the GATES OF HEAVEN-where St. Peter vets them to see if they will be allowed to enter HEAVEN. If they bad they are sent Sheol-if good allowed into PARADISE.
If THE GATES ARE HEAVEN ARE ACCEPTABLE TO GOD-then why not a wall to allow to protect us?

Your advice to avoid CNN and MSNBC is sound. In fact, all MSM, both print and televised, should be avoided, as they are the tools of a few corporate elites that manipulate us for their purposes.

A wall is needed. Immigration laws on the books need enforced and laws concerning numbers and criteria need enacted. We need to solve the problem, not have partisan politics played by Pelosi, Schumer, et al. We need to think for ourselves. People need to read Romans 13.

To get the progressives to fund the wall I suggest we use the wall as a support foundation for Solar panels and wind turbines. They would fall over themselves finding a way to subsidize it.

Why doesn’t someone (The President) tell everyone the health hazarding these people are bringing to our country like Tuberculosis etc which we don’t have here—and many others. Make people understand this NOT about descrimination but self-protection!!

    Many layers of wall:
    External barrier
    Interior enforcing laws.
    ID gangs
    Bountys for gangs
    Militias?? AZ ranchlands
    Biker gangs inside Mexico: Intel??
    Seize drug cartel assets.
    Seize US assets of cartels.
Cut UN funding for X% wall.
Cut Cong & Senate salaries to " donate" to Wall.

    Hope this helps

I know this won't change anything, but perhaps mentioning overstayed visas and using shock collars for those that overstay will get the attention of the opposition?

Thinking about how Nancy Pelosi keeps insisting that a wall is immoral, it is so insulting to our intelligence! Let's see, it's immoral to put up a barrier where no one can cross over and where there's no way to endanger the lives of our border patrols and the folks who would seek to harm them and to be harmed by them. But it is moral to encourage the the physical encounter between these two factions where someone can be hurt or killed. Hmmm. Flawless logic from the person who told us we have to pass Obamacare to find out what's in it. I feel like I'm back in my romper room days.

Isn’t it ironic that the most powerful nation in the world with the mightiest military is vulnerable to unarmed invaders on foot? We are victims of our own NWO politicians, weak laws, political correctness, and ordinary citizens who put up with it!

We NEED border security .... part of which is a barrier built where needed. I am tired of the Democrats and the Media referring to "Trump"s wall" !!! There are millions of people who want the wall. The Democrats obviously do not care what the people of the United States desire.

To Bill: your ending comments disturbed me referring to the “lazy unconcerned majority” — can you qualify by statistics of whom your speaking? I would suspect there are some on both sides of the aisle who are not getting out to vote, so, it would probably even put and have the same results. But, for those of us who do vote, I really don’t ish there were more ways for our voice to be felt once the every 2-4election cycles are over! During the “in-between” I feel helpless! FB posts only go so far. I can write to the President or Congressional leaders, but, who are the ones really hearing my message, much less care what I have to say! I am a very frustrated white-haired 70-year old grandmother from the Deep South, constitutional conservative Christian, who is ready to take up arms and march on Washington myself (but, alas, I fear that would do no good either).

Why is Trump not doing anything about HUD and old Obama contributions to leftist groups. this is from Judicial Watch. rump’s HUD Keeps Obama’s Funding for Radical Leftist groups

If I were Barack Obama, I would be pleased to see that many of the schemes I set up to funnel money to left wing groups are still in place two years into President Trump’s presidency. Our Corruption Chronicles blog illustrates how The Swamp plunders on.

The Trump administration has dedicated another big chunk of taxpayer money to a controversial Obama housing project and the latest allocation gives millions to a leftwing group that advocates open borders, organizes pro-illegal immigrant marches across the country and promotes a radical Chicano curriculum in publicly-funded charter schools nationwide.

Known as Choice Neighborhoods, the program aims to transform slums into desirable middle-class neighborhoods. The costly experiment was the centerpiece of a broader Obama initiative to convert poverty-stricken neighborhoods into sustainable, mixed-income areas with affordable housing, safe streets and good schools. It was launched as a collaboration between the departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Education, Justice, Treasury and Health and Human Services (HHS) to help attract private investment necessary to transform distressed areas.

There is much more if you go the website with money going to the former ACORN now with a different name.

I would rather have land and water mines installed instead of a wall with warning signs. The migrants can't climb over or dig under them either. They are trying to invade and take over our country and we must treat this as an act of war. We have to stop them at whatever cost by whatever means. We have to get real tough and show them we mean business. Once thy know the land or water is mined they won't try to get across either. Problem solved.

Thank you for addressing this man’s issues and you are right! It is just so many do not understand the issues involved in a secure border. Mr. Trump does and with more than just the wall portion! They also do not understand that if we stop the illegals then in a backward way as well as with Trymp’s agreement with new President of Mexico that they do pay for the wall. It stays in our pockets instead of theirs! There is much more than people generall understand about such economics! Again, thank you!
