Our Daily Verse...

Just yesterday, we featured commentary on a story detailing the ways in which outgoing Alabama sheriffs sabotaged incoming sheriffs who had beaten them fair and square at the polls. It seems they did everything possible to lay traps for the new sheriffs in town, by destroying financial records, phones and hard drives (a la Hillary Clinton); wasting revenue to keep it out of their hands when budgets were tight for necessities; and even playing childish pranks.

You’d think that by the time people with experience in government got to the White House or the upper-echelon of the Executive Branch, they would be professionals and would act accordingly. Think again. In politics, when it comes to sabotaging the incoming administration, there may be no limits to what some people will do.

Thanks to reporting by Charlie Savage in The New York Times, we’ve been aware for some time that in the last days of the Obama administration, the National Security Agency headed by James Clapper adopted new rules regarding what may be done with sensitive raw intelligence gathered by its most powerful surveillance operations. Before this change, only three agencies could share the information. Clapper made sure this list was expanded so that 17 separate agencies could have access to it.

With gratitude,

Mike Huckabee

The Fight over New York's "Green Light Bill"

By Mike Huckabee

Speaking of privileges that Democrats inexplicably think illegal immigrants deserve: In New York, the Democratic legislature just passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the so-called “Green Light Bill,” making an estimated 265,000 illegal immigrants eligible to receive driver’s licenses.

But at least there are some government officials left in New York who still have an understanding of the rudiments of law and the responsibilities of their offices.  That’s why county clerks in several counties are refusing to comply with the new state law.

The Incredible Shrinking Candidacy

By Mike Huckabee

New York City Mayor and long-long-longshot Democratic Presidential contender Bill DeBlasio was in Orangeburg, South Carolina (pop. 14,000) over the weekend.  At a campaign event, he bragged about being the mayor of a city of 8.6 million people to the "crowd" that showed up to hear him.  All 15 of them.

In fairness, though, if you polled those 8.6 million New Yorkers on how many of them think DeBlasio should be President, I’ll bet it would be nowhere near 15.

“Crimes of Violence”

By Mike Huckabee

Monday, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that a law requiring a longer prison sentence for using a gun during a crime of violence was unconstitutionally vague because it didn’t define what’s meant by “crimes of violence.”  Really, that's not obvious? In this ruling, Trump appointee Neil Gorsuch sided with the four liberals.  In a strong dissent, Justice Kavanaugh called the ruling an “extraordinary event” that could have a “severe” impact, making it harder to prosecute gun crimes and releasing violent offenders years earlier than Congress intended.

Of course, Congress could fix this immediately by passing an amended law that specifies what “crimes of violence” means, but that would require the House to actually do something, so don’t hold your breath.  Besides, they have a well-deserved vacation coming up. More details at the link:

Do these small-town sheriffs remind you of Hillary Clinton?

By Mike Huckabee

Guess what happens when people who operate like Hillary Clinton --- thinking rules don’t apply to them --- take over a bureaucracy. This seems to have happened in Alabama, and it may have been going on a long time. When the new sheriff of Marshall County, Phil Sims, took office in January, he found a cardboard box in a closet containing five smartphones, government issue, with multiple holes drilled all the way through them.

Of course, they probably weren’t under subpoena (though perhaps that’s now subject to change), as Hillary’s devices and those of her aides were. But still.

Sims had defeated longtime Sheriff J. Scott Walls in the June primary election, but this was the first time he’d been allowed to enter his new office. (This reminds me of the time the outgoing administration nailed my office door shut in the Arkansas State Capitol!  It happened.) He saw right away that the iPhones and Androids belonging to the outgoing sheriff and his top people had been destroyed, the hard drives had been removed from the computers, and mass quantities of records were just gone.

Many thousands of dollars were missing, too.

Other news you might have missed...Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has rudely declined several invitations to come to Europe to tour an actual concentration camp because she apparently thinks it’s part of a “far-right” political scheme to force her to learn something.
Big Showbiz News:  It appears that not everyone in Hollywood finds it inconceivable to shoot a movie in a state that doesn’t allow the slaughter of pre-born children with a heartbeat. But then, this celebrity is not known for putting up with bullies. This sounds like a movie whose opening weekend you might want to mark on your calendars now.

Answering the Unanswerable Questions:  How could Hollywood celebrities who won’t stop forcing their angry, leftist, anti-Trump political opinions onto their fans possibly be any more boring and annoying?  How about if they staged a reading of the Mueller report and actually expected people to sit there listening to them drone on for 11 hours?

That 23-year-old, out-of-the-blue-with-no-evidence accusation of rape against President Trump never seemed very solid, but that didn’t prevent some media outlets from trying to make it into a major story.  But the more airtime they give the accuser to promote her book, the more that seems like a bad decision.  Even Anderson Cooper at CNN was struck speechless at what she had to say and bailed out by going straight to a commercial.

As Jim Treacher at PJ Media reports, this is not the first time this particular writer has dabbled in bizarre public comments and behavior.  Bear in mind, she’s an advice columnist.  People ask her for advice.
