In the aftermath of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17, there’s been plenty to talk about regarding the Broward County Sheriff’s Department, none of it good. We know that the department has been plagued with misconduct and outright lawbreaking over the years, with over 66 criminal cases opened against deputies and other employees, including supervisors, in just a two-year period. It’s also come to light, thanks to an article in American Thinker, that in 2013 Sheriff Scott Israel found a way to combat racism and lower crime stats at the same time, but not in the way any thinking person would want.
His department essentially stopped arresting students for crimes.
The NAACP must have thought this idea was just great, because a look back to AP news reports in 2013 turns this up: “One of the nation’s largest school districts has reached an agreement with law enforcement agencies and the NAACP to reduce the number of students being charged with crimes for minor offenses.” This was the way they decided to deal with the statistics that showed students of color and other minority groups were “disproportionately impacted” by arrests. Their answer was to look the other way. No arrests, no “disproportionate” crime stats. Problem solved!
It should be noted that the concept of “minor offenses” apparently expanded to include violent behavior and burglary. Any rational person would think that this do-nothing policy would result in even MORE crime being committed by students. And it might even lead a deranged ex-student to think no one was going to stop him when he shot up a school.
